It apparently happened after an awards ceremony.

mistress

I guess she mentions sharia as its a law that encompasses rules about dress and in the media (gangs walking round tower hamlets trying to impose dress laws from shaira onto members of the public as well as seeing women fully veiled) perhaps made her link the two? Ie he has made a comment about my clothes being disgusting he must be into shaira law?

who knows.

You would not say this of a C and E vicar because there is no column of c or e law that wants to impose a certain kind of dress on women.

NewLife4Me · 24/11/2015 10:11

You should report them if they are offensive, of course.

OTOH a Muslim taxi driver had to collect my dd as we were unable to.
I was meeting her at the other end but it was a busy place.
My dd is 11 and shouted there's my mum over there.
Even though taxi firm was busy and running late the driver made sure I was her mum before allowing her out of the cab.
I praised him because I couldn't imagine his colleagues doing this.

DeoGratias · 24/11/2015 10:12

We must remain free to say Sharia law is sexist and morally repugnant however.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 24/11/2015 10:13

All I'm saying is why mention the fact he is 'Sharia' what is the purpose of that?...

'It's not racist to say that some people are horrendously misogynist'-exactly! So what if the man is a Muslim what has that got to do with his unacceptable behavior?

No one should be given a pass to act this way.

fuzzywuzzy · 24/11/2015 10:15

How does she know the religion of the taxi driver?

Thecatisatwat · 24/11/2015 10:16

But surely most Muslims disagree with Sharia law/ideals as well? If she'd used the word Muslim you could argue that she was condemning a whole swath of society, but she didn't, she was annoyed by someone expressing the sharia ideals of women not going out without a chaperone and women wearing shapeless clothes that cover their bodies (how anyone thinks her lovely dress looks like a burkha is beyond me - is it just because they're both black?).

I too would be really pissed off if somebody tried to impose their culture and rules on me in my own country, especially if I was expected to pay for the privilege. Hope Uber take action. Maybe it'll help black cabs take business back from Uber.

MistressoftheYoniverse · 24/11/2015 10:18

Does anyone else follow 'Sharia' law apart from Muslims Thecat?

EnaSharplesHairnet · 24/11/2015 10:19

Stick to regulated black cabs.

BarbarianMum · 24/11/2015 10:21

A friend of mine lived in a Pakistani muslim area of Birmingham in the late 1990s. She was routinely abused for the way she dressed (jeans/T shirt) when she walked the street and occasionally spat at too. When I visited her, I experienced similar. Walking down the road near the mosque on a Friday afternoon was particularly bad and we'd make quite a big detour to avoid it but it happened everywhere - shops/bus stops. All by men of course - old, young, middle aged but I don't think either their cultural background or religion was incidental.

SlaggyIsland · 24/11/2015 10:23

What the fuck is a "Sharia" taxi driver?

MistressoftheYoniverse · 24/11/2015 10:27

I lived a large Muslim community for many years and was always dressed in jeans and T-shirt (standard out-fit) I lived next door to a mosque never had abuse never been spat on or at..would have got the bastards arrested if they tried that crap...

fuzzywuzzy · 24/11/2015 10:29

A friends husband has been a taxi driver for decades (he finally have up as he developed a heart condition), he is Muslim, he was used to picking up very drunk very abusive people during weekends, Friday nights, being called up to obscure addresses for no fare to be there, to take a fare to their destination only to be faced by abuse and threats of assault when he asked for the pay. Over the years he was assaulted and abused and lost quite a bit (I imagine) of money in fares who refused to pay. These were all white non Muslim people.

He is utterly polite to a fault, speak very good lightly accented English and had regulars who requested him as he always went above an beyond for the elderly frail or simply to be polite.

This Uber driver should be reported of course, and it should be easier to track him down if his fare was booked online.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/11/2015 10:29

he made a rude remark.

To extrapolate this into discussion of Muslims "imposing their culture on everyone else" is bigoted.

We lived in an area full of non muslims. There were loads of young men who abused people in the street. It happens. To therefore hate all Muslims is bigoted.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/11/2015 10:30

if we are generalising from one taxi driver, we had a really lovely Muslim taxi driver, who we knew from nursery. he lifted DD out of the taxi for us and said she was growing up to be a beautiful young lady.

DeoGratias · 24/11/2015 10:30

Are people serious when saying Muslims don't support Sharia law? Are they living in a parallel universe?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/11/2015 10:30

This thread full of discussions about Muslims being vile in all different ways is exactly what the Daily Mail wants.

Thecatisatwat · 24/11/2015 10:32

Mistress, no idea but I can't think of any offhand in this country. Pretty sure that the CofE and Catholic faiths have no problem with women going out alone or wearing what we regard as normal clothes. Hindu friends of mine also don't appear to have such restrictions. I have no idea about Sikhs or minority faiths. TBF the Muslims that I know don't have a problem with it either. I think the term 'Sharia' does only refer to Islamic law but you'd have to ask others on here with more knowledge.

Owllady · 24/11/2015 10:32

Well that will teach me right for posting clumsily whilst hoovering Confused I apologise for any offence caused, now quote me in bold

HesterShaw · 24/11/2015 10:35

The Daily Mail and its ilk trawl Twitter and Facebook and other provincial publications for their articles. It's what masquerades as journalism. They might interview the subject but even so, they will ignore the interview if it doesn't fit the exact story they have worked out in their little brains beforehand i.e. the one most designed to get the most reaction on their comments section so more advertisers will come forward.

It's just clickbait nowadays.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 24/11/2015 10:37

There has been a marked increase in hate crimes and attacks on innocent Muslims. I wish articles would be published with positive stories too.

HesterShaw · 24/11/2015 10:37

As for what the fuck is a sharia taxi driver - come on, don't be so purposefully obtuse. It's obvious what she means by it, even if the phrase is inaccurate.

OldNickola · 24/11/2015 10:39

Why would people doubt this happened? If it was a Christian taxi driver would anyone be questioning the authenticity? I doubt it Hmm.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 24/11/2015 10:44

I too lived a couple of doors down from a mosque for a few years and never had even one incident of disrespect from anyone. But that was 25 years ago in London.

I have walked in Muslim streets in Manchester more recently and there was a very different atmosphere.

My DD's boyfriend is a working class boy from one of the northern towns blighted by mass child abuse offences. I can't imagine him ever being racist to an individual but he has a sort of generalised distrust of Muslims as a group. It sits awkwardly with us as a liberal lefty family.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 24/11/2015 10:45

ah, we have got bored of trans bashing (or have we?) so lets have a MUS BASH instead

so one person spoke like shit , and you start a thread on it?

so fucking tranparant and |YUK

reni2 · 24/11/2015 10:48

Do mn get some money from the Daily Mail? They should, bet they create loads of site visits. I have never been as well informed about their content as I am since joining mn.
