She thinks I'm being a fuss pot but I'm worried about toxic shock, which you don't seem to hear much about these days. She certainly hadn't heard of it.

I didn't think toxic shock was a thing with modern manufacture methods, and have definitely left one in that long. Maybe she should use a mooncup though if you're worried.

Yanbu, does she get up to go to the toilet overnight?

Maybe you can persuade her to use a moon cup / menstrual cup if she doesn't like pads?

I would not leave ANYTHING in for 14 hours, but apparently with cups there is no risk of toxic shock.

When does she sleep that long, though? I mean, I am someone who likes to stay in bed for some 12 hours, but I don't sleep all the time. Doesn't she have to go to the loo somewhen during that time?

They used to explain all that to them during sex ed etc.

Sit her down with the details and be up front that you're not telling her to scare her but because you want her to know.

It's usually only once a week that she sleeps for that long. She's up early for school in the week and has sports commitments most Sunday's so she seems to have got into a pattern of catching up with sleep on a Saturday, not waking until 1 or 2pm if left. She never wakes up in the night.

Do you routinely ask your daughter how long she uses a tampon for?

YANBU. She will probably have to get up around 7, use the loo and head back to bed!

Have none of you seriously ever done that? I do it all the time! Or I did pre-kids. I used to change tampon at maybe 10pm and then sleep until noon or later. I never got up in the night to pee as a teenager either. I know it's not recommended, but I have done it a lot. And left them in for 24 hrs near the end of my cycle too.

@NickiFury: I suppose if the daughter routinely uses tampons, and never gets up at night, it is kind of obvious, isn't it?

On the topic in general, there seem to be no laws requiring that the harmlessness of menstruation products be proven. This makes me extremely wary of putting any of those inside my body.

I've had toxic shock twice.

The first time was when I was 15 in the early 90s and I left one in for the whole school day.

The second time was about 15 years ago when I had one in for just 2 hours. I hadn't used one side I was at school but I stupidly thought it would be OK.

It is very unpleasant to say the least!!

Oh, and I use a moon cup without it causing a problem!

Pipbin, out of curiousity, which brand was the tampon? Do you remember? I fuzzily remember that there was one brand that was accused of causing many such incidents ... but I don't remember which one.

Depends... Does she put it in right before bed and take it out first thing when she wakes up? If so, she's probably fine.

I read an article only a few weeks ago about a 16 year old girl who died from TSS after having left a tampon in for too long. It was really awful.

The absolute longest I leave one in for is 6 hours but I always try to change it earlier than that. I don't wear tampons overnight.

Yanbu! It is a terrible risk. I heard of someone dying from toxic shock certainly within the last 12 months.

I was with one of my best friends when she went into TSS and had to take her to A&E in the middle of the night - horribly scary.
