Just that really. There's 2 of us. OH has a shirt every day, bedding and towels once a week, my work stuff every 2/ 3 wears, plus underwear and tea towels etc and OHs out of work clothes - t shirts every 1/2 wears, trousers once a week or more frequently if dirty.

But this seems to add up to a washload per day (or 3 in the week, 3 on a weekend if I don't do it regularly. And I don't understand why, we have big machine. Surely 2 people shouldn't create so much washing?!

People who do 1 or more loads per day, how do you get it dry????

rageagainsttheBIL · 16/11/2015 02:31

Don't wash your tea towels with your undies!

Poo from undies can get into tea towels and bacteria is not killed especially if they're not washed at high temps. People can and do get ill from this.

We wash undies in with clothes at high Temp and tea towels with hand towels etc

(Oh and prob do 4-5 loads a week)

Want2bSupermum · 16/11/2015 02:44

We do 10-12 loads a week - 2 adults, 2 kids and a golden (dog). I put on a load every night before going to bed and move it to the dryer in the morning, hanging up what doesn't tumble try.

I would love to do less laundry but that would mean starting the day with stained clothing. My standards have dropped but I'm not willing to let them go lower.

It also doesn't help when the kids are sick. DS has diarrhea right now so his trousers smell after each poop. I've tried airing them but it doesn't help so I wash them. I'm not having my kids wear smelly clothes.

DeltaSunrise · 16/11/2015 02:44

2 adults and 2 kids who are 6 & 5. We have a 5.5kg top loader machine.

Dp wears a shirt every day for work. The dc don't have uniform so wear normal clothes as do I.

I do 2 loads on a Friday, 1 our bedding and 1 kids bedding
2 loads on a Saturday, 1 shirts/whites and 1 towels.

Then from Sunday to Thursday as and when for all other clothes, probably around 2-3 loads.

DeltaSunrise · 16/11/2015 02:45

Actually one more as I now wash the dog stuff on a Sunday.

TheDowagerCuntess · 16/11/2015 02:59

In not sure how big our machine is, but it's not that big.

Family of 4 + au pair.

Our au pair washes the kids' laundry every other day.

I do about three loads on a Friday when I work from home, and then 2-4 loads over the weekend. I don't know how many loads she does of her own stuff, but imagine she puts it in with the kids' stuff.

Would love a bigger machine to enable fewer loads.

Senpai · 16/11/2015 05:16

If I do it once a week I have about 3-4 loads. But we have a large washing machine that can fit a king size comforter in it. So a full basket fits.

Some loads I do every week, some I do every couple, some as needed, but a weekly wash averages to:

  • 1 hot/hot = whites/baby clothes
  • 1-2 warm/warm = colors
  • 1-2 cold/cold = jeans/polos/business shirts that aren't white

There's three of us.

TheBunnyOfDoom · 16/11/2015 05:18

Two of us, small machine, 3-4 loads a week. One bedding/towels wash and then the other loads depend on work and how mucky things have gotten.

BathshebaDarkstone · 16/11/2015 05:25

There are 4 of us. I do a big load 4 times a week. I find 2 sets of school uniform and PE kit take up space, also DH's cleaning cloths for work.

Minesril · 16/11/2015 05:45

Family of 3 including a 16 month old who likes to turn his milk cup upside down frequently so needs fresh clothes every day and new pjs every night - 4 or 5 a week including bedding and towels.

This thread confirms my belief that THE greatest inventions of the 20th century were the washing machine and the pill. I just can't comprehend the amount of time women had to spend hand washing clothes for their yearly-expanding family. Mind you, some women still like to chain themselves to the ironing board. Yay feminism.

I'm a bit irritated by the sanctimony on this thread about 'wasting the world's resources' - do you own a car, for example?

Kr1stina · 16/11/2015 05:57

I do about 7 loads a week, for a family of 5

School uniform ( except jumpers and ties ) and Dhs workwear needs washed daily ( walk to school and playground are muddy )

Jumpers and non school trousers are worn more that once

Towels and bedding done one a week ( ish) . We all have our own towels and they go immediately onto a heated towel rail, so they dry quickly

I change the tea towels every day but they go in the basket and are done once a week with towels on a hotter wash

3 of us do sports about 5 times a week and all this is washed separately as fabric conditioner should not be used on technical fabric . We have several sets each and it's done about every 5 days ( when we are running out )

Very muddy outdoor gardening clothes ( worn by me) are not washed every day but reused if possible. I'm suprised at the horse owner who does two full sets a day - most outdoor people I know wear the muddy but dry stuff again.

I try to reduce the amount of washing I do, to save time and energy .

Items that are otherwise clean with a small mark are spot cleaned , not washed.

The kids are bad for throwing clothes into the Laundry basket rather than hanging them up because it's easier ( for them ) . I make a point of making them come down and collect them to hang them up again. Preferably when they are watching TV.

I try to do one load a day so I can hang it on the airer,to avoid using the tumble drier too often . If I don't have time in the evenings after work , I put the washing machine on the timer to finish about 6:30 or 7am and I hang it up as soon as I wake up in the mornings .

UnicornFart · 16/11/2015 06:07

Me, DH, DS (12 months) and DDog. I do at least one wash a day!

DH & I are both shift workers & do 6 shifts in a row. So that's 12 shirts, 4 pairs of trousers & 2 jumpers. Add onto that 'normal' clothes before/after work.

DS has a constant stream of dribble, so at least 2 tops a day for him plus bibs. He also had clean PJs each night.

Muddy towels from DDog & his blankets.

Bedding & towels once a week.

Can't wait to get a bigger machine, hopefully it will reduce the amount of time it's on!

CheesyNachos · 16/11/2015 06:16

I am a bit relieved that I am about average on this thread!

MummyPig24 · 16/11/2015 06:52

There's 3 dcs, dh and I. I do at least a load every day. Extra if I'm doing towels, bedding or sports kit.

londonrach · 16/11/2015 07:05

Dont understand whats the problem with t towels and underwear together! I do a bedding wash, shirt wash, wool wash in the winter, and then the rest can washed when the basket is full enough for a wash of similar colours which means jeans, underwear, t towels...etc.

Savagebeauty · 16/11/2015 07:22

When ex and dd lived here it would be 10-12 washes a week. Lots of sports clothes.
But just me and DS now so about 6 loads a week.

BumpTheElephant · 16/11/2015 07:29

About 5-6 loads a week. 7kg machine, family of four. I wash pjs, underwear etc after each wear. Kids clothes get wshed after each wear as usually muddy/covered in food. Me and DH will wear trousers for several wears, tops get washed after 1-2 wears. Bedding every other week.

I thought I washed a lot but it seems not compared to most on here!

riverboat1 · 16/11/2015 07:33

We are 2.5 (me, DP and DSS who is here part of the time) and we do 3-4 loads per week. Only have the machine going at the weekend, never during the week.

We are undoubtedly slovenly by MN standards - bedding only changed EOW and we both wear jeans/jumpers daily for work that can be worn for ages before putting them in for a wash.

Binkybix · 16/11/2015 07:35

I thought I was being extravagant doing one a day at the moment due to lack of nursing clothes! 2 adults, mucky toddler and a sicky baby here.

Wear uniform but only have one pair of trousers

Wouldn't it be better all round just to get another pair of trousers?!

onecurrantbun1 · 16/11/2015 07:38

Probably 6 or so a week? We have solar panels so I don't always do a full wash in the day, I tend to play it by ear and see what the weather is like. How and where do you get it all dry in the winter?!

ToffeeForEveryone · 16/11/2015 07:39

Just me and DH in house, we do 3-4 loads per week (and DH thinks that's excessive!). We only use 2-3 bath towels a week and change sheets every other week though.

So 1-2 loads of towels and bedding
1 of darks
1 of lights / whites (put them in together)

Washing baskets are rarely totally empty but I only put on full loads. Try to do it at weekends as live in a flat with no outside space, so drying anything that can't be tumbled is a faff.

wonkylegs · 16/11/2015 07:42

3 of us
3-4 full loads a week,
1 of which is whites, the others mixed.
Includes school uniform, DHs scrubs and work shirts, swimming stuff, bedding etc
I feel like that's enough but I know it'll probably increase by one more load when child no 2 arrives next year.
The only time we end up doing more loads is when MIL is here, she never fills the machine properly and insists on washing things immediately rather than waiting for a full load.

MirandaWest · 16/11/2015 07:44

I'm not sure how many loads we do per week. I just wash as loads build up iyswim - either brights, lights or darks. Some days no loads, some days one, some days two. Probably ends up about 5 or 6 a week. There's three adults and two children.

Openup41 · 16/11/2015 07:49

7 loads a week - 2 adults, 2 dc. If we are out all day over the weekend, I put on two loads the following day.

Bottoms are worn twice if still clean at the end of the day.

Pengweng · 16/11/2015 08:02

I do one load a day for me, DH, and the DTs. DH has a casual office so just normal clothes for both of us. DTs wear school uniform plus normal clothes.

So one white wash (girls polo shirts mostly), one dark (girls uniform plus socks and pants), one with towels, one with bedding (changed every other week but i do mine one week and then the girls the next week so i don't have too much at once) and 2 coloured washes.

We have a 7kg machine and no tumble drier (sob).
