AIBU to put washing up liquid in my dishwasher?

Damn, I thought I had another packet of tabs but it turns out it's salt. Dishwasher is full. Can I put washing up liquid in the socket thing or will my dishwasher over-froth and end up looking like a foam disco?

If I didn't have to clean it up, I'd be tempted to do it. But we went on holiday in the summer and I put a whole bottle of shower gel in the jacuzzi bath and the entire room filled up. I'd post those pictures but they have my DS in so on the grounds of internet safety / child protection etc blah blah.

Not unless you've a day spare to clean up the mess.

Fluffyears · 11/11/2015 22:41

Bet there is a YouTube video showing what happens...off to google BRB!

yumyumpoppycat · 11/11/2015 22:58

You might break your dishwasher sensor so prob not worth the ris, but I have a cheap dishwasher and have done this a few times Blush once it was a mare and foam splurging out of it, but other times when I have literally put in a drop it has been ok but the dishes don't come up that clean. PS vinegar helps get rid of the foam if it all goes wrong!

Squiff85 · 11/11/2015 23:02

Been there - not good!!

milkysmum · 11/11/2015 23:02

Well just to balance things out, I have put a little tiny bit of washing up liquid in my dishwater many times and it has always been fineSmile

Roomba · 11/11/2015 23:13

I did this once with just a tiny bit of liquid. A LOT of foam seeped out of the seals all over the floor.

I also once put in a washing (laundry) tab thing (sleep deprivation) and that seemed to work fine! My pots were gleaming but the laundry like smell was a bit offputting Grin.

katemiddletonsothermum · 12/11/2015 13:15

Well, I am an idiot. I went to the shops this morning and forgot to write it on my list. So I forgot to buy tabs. Bugger.

Anyway, I have taken the plunge. I have used washing up liquid. The dishwasher is on now. Wish me luck.

Photos. We will need photos.

PrimalLass · 12/11/2015 14:03

It will be fine, honest.

MrsHathaway · 12/11/2015 14:43

It took me several hours to scoop out the foam when I did this. Then I had to hand wash everything.

DH was unsympathetic, saying it was obvious that washing up detergent and dishwasher detergent would function differently Hmm

Photos.

ImperialBlether · 12/11/2015 14:48

Why would you use washing up liquid when everyone's told you not to?

OverScentedFanjo · 12/11/2015 14:50

Brave, very brave!

YakTriangle · 12/11/2015 14:52

I've done it loads of times too, never been a problem, just doesn't wash as well as tabs do. A tiny bit is fine. A massive squirt would be problematic.

Is your kitchen floor a mass of bubbles so far?

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 12/11/2015 14:56

Marking my place, for the foam-pocalypse!

Mishaps · 12/11/2015 14:58

And, while you are about it, try putting milk to boil in your electric kettle!! Grin

abigamarone · 12/11/2015 15:06

A teaspoon of so of regular washing powder is fine. And does the same job effectively with a slightly different smell.

I once put one of those dish-washing sponge on a stick things in the washer, having forgotten I'd filled it. Not pretty.

merrymouse · 12/11/2015 16:11

Almost 2 hours later and no word - either perfectly fine or somewhere in the UK foam is seeping down a street...

specialsubject · 12/11/2015 16:15

Chickenpie1 · 12/11/2015 16:19

Don't, this stopped mine working for ages

PrimalLass · 12/11/2015 17:18

Everyone didn't. A few of us said we've done it several times and have been fine.

Pipestheghost · 12/11/2015 17:24

I did this when I worked in a hotel, it had disasterous consequences Grin

LadyNym · 12/11/2015 17:30

DH did this once (not with ours, thankfully, but back when we were teens and still lived with parents). I didn't see the results but his description was much like all the foam party comments here.

I'm mostly just place-marking, though, for when the OP returns...

katemiddletonsothermum · 12/11/2015 18:00

Sorry - internet connection was dodgy and then I had to go out and be important for a bit.

Well, I have to say I am very disappointed. It cleaned my dishes beautifully and not a jot of foam spilling out into foamaggedon.

Not even worth a photo. Sorry.

Told you it would be ok.
