AIBU?

AIBU to put washing up liquid in my dishwasher?

Damn, I thought I had another packet of tabs but it turns out it's salt. Dishwasher is full. Can I put washing up liquid in the socket thing or will my dishwasher over-froth and end up looking like a foam disco?

I have used washing powder (for clothes) and it works fine.

you must have put in juuuuust enough w.u liquid! Yes that's what I found with tea cups, I guess the liquid's not abrasive enough, or else there is loads of bleach in dw tabs

Admittedly, I've had to put half the mugs back in as all the tea tannin hasn't washed off. But the plates look good.

Don't do it! Your kitchen will look like an Ibiza foam party!

Sorry - internet connection was dodgy and then I had to go out and be important for a bit.

Well, I have to say I am very disappointed. It cleaned my dishes beautifully and not a jot of foam spilling out into foamaggedon.

Not even worth a photo. Sorry.

DH did this once (not with ours, thankfully, but back when we were teens and still lived with parents). I didn't see the results but his description was much like all the foam party comments here.

I'm mostly just place-marking, though, for when the OP returns...

I did this when I worked in a hotel, it had disasterous consequences Grin

Why would you use washing up liquid when everyone's told you not to?

Everyone didn't. A few of us said we've done it several times and have been fine.

Don't, this stopped mine working for ages

Almost 2 hours later and no word - either perfectly fine or somewhere in the UK foam is seeping down a street...

A teaspoon of so of regular washing powder is fine. And does the same job effectively with a slightly different smell.

I once put one of those dish-washing sponge on a stick things in the washer, having forgotten I'd filled it. Not pretty.

And, while you are about it, try putting milk to boil in your electric kettle!! Grin

Marking my place, for the foam-pocalypse!

I've done it loads of times too, never been a problem, just doesn't wash as well as tabs do. A tiny bit is fine. A massive squirt would be problematic.

Is your kitchen floor a mass of bubbles so far?

It took me several hours to scoop out the foam when I did this. Then I had to hand wash everything.

DH was unsympathetic, saying it was obvious that washing up detergent and dishwasher detergent would function differently Hmm

Photos.

It will be fine, honest.
