To begrudge buying new bed linen every few months?

I usually spend about £25 for a duvet set, maybe £10 for a sheet. Within about 6 weeks the sheets go bobbly or the stitching comes open at the edges of the duvets and sheet.

Am I buying cheap crap?! If anybody could advise somewhere to buy decent bedding that would be great

TalkinPeas, I often send holey socks (& worse) to the charity shop in a bag labelled RAGS. I know there's a bloke locally who lives in a very swanky house on the back of turning holey socks etc into dusters & stuff Smile

FullOfChoc · 10/11/2015 21:49

Are you near a dunelm mill? Their hotel range is great.

BerylStreep · 10/11/2015 22:22

TK Maxx normally do their high thread count duvet sets at around £30, and I have paid £8.99 for a 400 thread count super king fitted sheet there.

jauntyofarabia · 11/11/2015 04:23

Get yourself down to Costco for their amazing gazillion thread count sheets. Amazing value and lasts forever and ridiculously soft after a couple of washes.

My mum first discovered their sheets when she was staying in a boutique B&B in Boston and loved the bedsheets so much she asked the v flamboyant couple who ran it where they were from. Costco was their response in whispered tones Grin

StarlingMurmuration · 11/11/2015 08:00

A bit late for the correction, but polycotton not polly cotton! Autocorrect making me look stupid once more.

laplumeofmyaunt · 11/11/2015 08:02

Sanderson duvet covers bought cheap in TK Maxx. We run a B&B so bedlinen is often washed 4-5 times a week. Still good after 4 years.

winewolfhowls · 11/11/2015 08:24

I echo the recommendation for the Debenhams January sale. Amazing saving last time I bought some, and really high quality

Grin at Drunken Mill lol

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 11/11/2015 17:35

I've had most of my bed linen so long I can't remember where it came from!

One set I know is from Ikea & probably about 10 years old. I have other sets up to 20 years old which are still going strong.

I don't like the shiny/silky ones though - aren't they all sweaty? Confused

MediumBox · 11/11/2015 17:57

not if they actually are silk.

DickDewy · 11/11/2015 17:59

We have bed linen from mostly cheap shops - IKEA, Next etc.

Gets washed at 60 twice a week them tumble dried - lasts for ages.

Gladysandtheflathamsandwich · 11/11/2015 18:02

There are some really good bargains at TKMaxx, really high thread count 100% cotton. No bobbling at all.

But I have a couple of polycotton sheets and they have bobbled really badly.

kickassangel · 11/11/2015 18:06

I have some cotton sheets passed down from my grandmother. I believe they were bought shortly after the war ended!

They are 'spare' used for covering up stuff when we decorate, but still, no bobbling!

BarbaraofSeville · 11/11/2015 18:19

Another vote for Ikea 100% cotton. Lasts for years and is never ironed - life's too short.

You don't have to pay JL/White company prices. Any 100% cotton is totally fine.

SarahSavesTheDay · 11/11/2015 18:23

I have sheets that are more than 10 years old. I'm intrigued by the idea of Costco high thread-count sheets, I might have to check them out.

TheSpectreOfMorningtonCrescent · 11/11/2015 18:39

Ive got a duvet cover from Brentford Nylons (remember them gimmers?) bought in 1980. Starting to go a bit thin and fading a little, but still fine, if dated.

ephemeralfairy · 11/11/2015 18:50

I've just realised that the duvet cover on my bed currently was bought at the Sunday market in Brighton circa about 1992... Slightly faded in places but going strong!!

trixymalixy · 11/11/2015 18:56

I can't bear polycitton bedding. It bobbles almost instantly.

I have just reluctantly thrown out some 15+ year old habitat bedding that had given up the ghost. Haven't found anything as heavyweight to replace it yet.

Loquaciousd · 11/11/2015 20:00

Dunelm, 500 thread count range; or, john Lewis seconds. Both not cheap but great value for what you get. Don't compromise on bed linen. I always get plain white, there is only one shade so if one piece gets stained or ripped you don't have to replace the lot.

laffymeal · 11/11/2015 20:02

The IKEA stuff lasts for ages. I've thrown stuff out that's been perfectly fine but I'm sick of the sight of it.

The only stuff I had to chuck after a few months was from Tesco, cheap shite.

IsItMeOr · 11/11/2015 21:19

We have Sheridan bedlinen, in cotton sateen. It washes like a dream, tumbles great and no need to iron if you're not too fussy and fold it quickly once it's finished.

If you're not fussed about having the absolute latest design (and hey, you've already said you want to keep it for years...), Just Linen have great reductions on Sheridan and other brands.

MILLS356 · 11/11/2015 21:28

Definitely 100% cotton bedding. In my experience it doesn't matter whether you buy cheap (ikea is good) or expensive.

Do like M&s and John Lewis for their percale fitted sheets.

Everyone who has slept in my sheets (easy..... I mean guests!!!!) has always commented on how soft the bedding is.

Hate pricklycotton, mean polycotton with a passion.

FireCrotch · 11/11/2015 22:14

I bought a blue and white striped set from Aldi. It's 100% cotton. It was £15 including the sheet and spare pillowcases. They've been washed every week and tumble dried
And they're like new after 2 years.
I did buy a duvet set from The House Of Frazer 12 years ago on a whim. I had a few gift vouchers to use up. I bought a £250 waffled white cotton set reduced to £125. It still looks brand new. I'm no professional housewife but it's maintained its pure whiteness. I don't treat it special or owt like that. However it's very very warm. I thought it would be cooler but nope. Can only use it from December onwards.

JaceLancs · 11/11/2015 22:18

Dorma bedding here - high thread count
Despite regular washing same sets in use for over 8 years
Bottom sheets don't seem to last quite as long but I buy best hotel quality I can afford from places like tkmaxx - usually last 2-3 years

jevoudrais · 11/11/2015 22:29

Tesco. 50% poly 50% cotton. All get washed at 60 (and then tumble dried) and I've got one set that's at least six years old and is still fine.
