To begrudge buying new bed linen every few months?

I usually spend about £25 for a duvet set, maybe £10 for a sheet. Within about 6 weeks the sheets go bobbly or the stitching comes open at the edges of the duvets and sheet.

Am I buying cheap crap?! If anybody could advise somewhere to buy decent bedding that would be great

I wash usually on a 50, is that too high?!

Too low in my house. Everything gets boiled here.

fluffysox15 · 10/11/2015 14:25

Sorry, missed a few posts there!

Yes I use fabric softener. In summer I line dry, in winter I use the tumble dryer.

Feeling more miffed now I know it's just me it happens to! I need to invest in good quality bedding rather then lots of new cheap sets I think.

I have White Company and John Lewis bed linen that has been on the go and in major use for 8-10 years and is in great condition. I think with bed linen, you definitely buy it cheap, buy it twice. Look out for White Company sales - they have big discounts and their towels are also amazing - they last forever.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/11/2015 14:27

We wash ours on 30. I bought some sheridan stuff of justlinen.co.uk.

TheWernethWife · 10/11/2015 14:27

I've loads of duvet sets, had some of them for years. Buy from John Lewis and Next, lots of choice and the quality is very good.

fluffysox15 · 10/11/2015 14:28

Thankyou everybody, I shall go take a look at The White Company.

It must be the mix that's causing the bobbles. How high a temp does it say it should be washed at on the labels?

DinosaursRoar · 10/11/2015 14:29

I've got 10 year old bedding from John Lewis that's still going strong, but it is white cotton with just some white stitching on it, but no other embellisments - so perhaps it's the style you are buying? Those ones with silky bits I would assume are really for show ones and not your daily stuff.

Get some plain white stuff with a high thread count next time JL do a sale (they'll probably do a deal on Black Friday - their towel deals are fabulous too).

Grumpyoldblonde · 10/11/2015 14:29

No just you, I have had 3 sets of the duvet covers with the silk strips and they fell apart in no time, they are pretty delicate. My sheets last years though and I will never buy the silky striped covers again. Buy unembellished covers from now on OP.

Battleshiphips2 · 10/11/2015 14:29

I always find dunelm to be great quality. In fact they are the only sets that I have that don't seem to bobble.

bettyberry · 10/11/2015 14:30

It sounds like the fabric is of lower quality if it goes really bobbly. cotton blends tend to do that as well as cottons with a more visible weave I knew my textiles stuff would come in handy somewhere

I use 100% cotton sheets, plain white duvet covers and use a hand sewn quilt or throw to brighten it up rather than buying fancy duvet covers because they always seem to fall apart or the applique/ribbons shrink messing up the entire look of the duvet.

I've picked my bedding up both new and in charity shops. Some of them I have had for years.

OverScentedFanjo · 10/11/2015 14:30

Aside from washing, what else are you doing with your bedding that warrants splitting seams and bobbling?!

Hatethis22 · 10/11/2015 14:32

Hot tumbling action? (In the dryer?)

yeOldeTrout · 10/11/2015 14:32

You don't need to wash at 50 to remove skin flakes etc. 30 wash would physically remove those bits. 60 wash would sterilise things if you needed to kill dust mites. At 50 you've got worst of all worlds: expensive hard-on-textiles eco-unfriendly wash that doesn't reliably kill bugs.

What do the washing instructions say on the ones you buy, OP?
One suspects instrux say 30 or 40, not 50.
Do you wash more frequently than once a week?
Our covers (cheap bought on street markets or in charity shops) are mostly decades old before they come apart, and even then I can patch them.

FelicityGubbins · 10/11/2015 14:33

It's not just you op, I have some bedding that is 30 odd years old and is perfect and bought a new duvet cover and sheet about 6 weeks ago(silky feel) that I have binned this week as it was bobbly and coming undone on the embroidered pattern.
It's the material, I'm going to stick to cotton!

MaisieDotes · 10/11/2015 14:34

hatethis was that meant to be a double entendre?

Mamia15 · 10/11/2015 14:36

Plain pure cotton bedding here - ours have lasted several years. We get these cheaply from IKEA and Dunelm.

I never use fabric conditioner.

miaowroar · 10/11/2015 14:37

Years ago I bought bedding - well sheets - which bobbled even before they were washed! This happened several times before someone told me to buy 100% cotton. I always get 100% cotton sheets with a highish thread count but can get away with 50/50 duvet covers and pillowcases if I have to. I only wash at 40 degrees though.

Salmiak · 10/11/2015 14:38

Wait till the January sales, then buy some really good quality cotton sets at 70% off.

fluffysox15 · 10/11/2015 14:40

I'm actually guilty of leaving the bedding three weeks before washing, so I don't think I'm over washing it as I'm a bit lazy in that departmentBlush

It must be the embilshments. I'm not keen on plain white bedding so I think il go for a coloured variety but with zero embellishment and decent quality.

Over Scented Fanjo- mostly cuddling the DH Grin Nothing vigorous enough to warrant the damage to the sheets!!!

100% cotton is so much better, even cheaper ones. TK Maxx is a great option. Agree that plain white bedding is much better and easier to take care of, and you can put it on a really hot wash. I only use white vinegar as softener too.

HeadDreamer · 10/11/2015 14:41

I got my sets from M&S some 10 years ago. We are still using it. DD1's cot bed bedding sets from John Lewis and still look very new and was bought about 4 years ago. Looks like 100% cotton is the reason from this thread? Thanks for the suggestions of Dunelm Mill and ikea. Will look there next time for cheaper sets.

LimboNovember · 10/11/2015 14:41

tk max op - get really good quality stuff at - cheaper Grin

i wash mine roughly every two weeks, on high

HeadDreamer · 10/11/2015 14:41

I use bright red sheets, and DD1 has blue. They are both fine. I don't like plain white.

LimboNovember · 10/11/2015 14:42

mine are coloured and look fine
