To begrudge buying new bed linen every few months?

fluffysox15 · 10/11/2015 14:06

I usually spend about £25 for a duvet set, maybe £10 for a sheet. Within about 6 weeks the sheets go bobbly or the stitching comes open at the edges of the duvets and sheet.

Am I buying cheap crap?! If anybody could advise somewhere to buy decent bedding that would be great

I've got some ikea sets that are a decade old.

I wash all bed linen at 90c as well..... Other linen is newer but still years + old.

Want to treat myself to some new bed linen in the sales so this thread has been interesting.

vulgarbunting · 10/11/2015 19:33

Definitely not just you, this is driving me crazy!

Bakeoffcake · 10/11/2015 19:38

John Lewis and Laura Ashley bedding are fab. I have sets which are over 15 years old.

Only every buy cotton and also all white and then buy new throws or cushions if I want a change.

StickyProblem · 10/11/2015 19:58

We had some posh Christie I got in a sale, cotton, 800 thread count. Three years on and DP put his foot through the bottom sheet which had worn thin. The pillowcases and duvet stil look good though. I envy all you people whose bedding lasts decades!

BerylStreep · 10/11/2015 20:07

We have bedlinen we got as wedding presents 13 years ago, which are still going strong. In fact now I think about it, I have stuff I bought about 20 years ago which I still use in the guest room.

The nicest stuff I have bought is:

Jasper Conran at Debenhams
AndSoToBed - hugely expensive but got a bargain in the sales
V&A range, bought for buttons in TK Maxx
Habitat stuff, about 20 years ago, still going strong

The worst bedding I have ever bought has been from Ikea.

I wash all bedding at 60 degrees.

SettlinginNicely · 10/11/2015 20:17

I never iron sheets. Life is too short. Ours are all cotton. We just wash 'em, dry 'em and put them straight back on the bed without folding. I do have extra sets, but they just sit in the cupboard waiting for guests, or the favoured sets to finally rot.

PeasePuddingCold · 10/11/2015 20:22

Life is far far too short to iron duvet covers. Goodness me! really? Just fold straight off the line or out of the dryer. Duvet covers etc just get crumpled when you sleep in them anyway. Crikey, read a book or something, instead of wasting time ironing sheets.

BertieBotts · 10/11/2015 20:25

Since a few people have mentioned ikea bedding in this thread - can I be cheeky and ask for some traffic on my thread asking about ikea duvets? :)

Cloppysow · 10/11/2015 20:25

My mum buys me bedding from John Lewis sales. It is incredibly good quality, i'll probably have it forever.

TalkinPeas · 10/11/2015 20:26

Ditch the fabric softener - it softens by weakening the fabric
Ditch the fancy patterns - all seams are weaknesses : get a pretty throw and then have plain duvets

I use John Lewis Cotton sheets and expect 10 years out of each one

LadyEdith · 10/11/2015 20:38

Pure cotton is a must. Do you have a Boundary Mills shop near you? Fantastic bargains on great brands like Christy, Sheridan, Sanderson. I have several sets in these brands that are ancient but all still looking good.

sleeponeday · 10/11/2015 20:46

I had a lot of John Lewis bedlinen as wedding presents, and it's still going strong, a decade later. Wash at 60, and tumble, too, so not pampered either. We got the fancy Egyptian cotton ones, which feel lovely without softener. Worth the expense IMO, and they come in really pretty colours, too.

wallywobbles · 10/11/2015 20:46

I adore my white company stuff but it doesn't last long. We tumble dry so maybe that's why. Last lot lasted 4 years tops (and I m rotating 3 or 4 sets). Probably less. Go for the highest thread count in TK max

ohtheholidays · 10/11/2015 20:51

I've bought ours from Asda,BHS,B&Q,Primark,Argos all different shops and never had that happen so far.

I wash everyone's bedding(all 6 sets)once a week on a 40,it always comes out clean.

StarlingMurmuration · 10/11/2015 20:52

I've got a white 100% cotton duvet set from Matalan that's about ten years old and it's still perfect. But these days I usually buy from John Lewis. I ink polly cotton stuff tends to be more likely to bobble up than 100% cotton.

PollyPerky · 10/11/2015 21:03

Our bedding is all JL or The White Company BUT I bought my mum a top of the range cotton sheet from Wilkos and she is over the moon about it. This is their best quality stuff and she rates it as good as JL and TWC for a fraction of the cost. I think a double duvet cover is £40 - only white available

fluffysox15 · 10/11/2015 21:09

Why have I never educated myself on bed linen before?! The amount I've spent on replacement polyester I could have a few decent cotton ones by now Angry

Thankyou everybody for all the input, I like the idea of using a pretty runner and bed spread over a plain duvet so I'm going to go with that.

Also those who mentioned about polyester making you sweat, explains a lot as I'm forever over heating even at this time of the year!

I've had a good look online and found a few plain ones I like, it's going to cost me roughly £70 for a sheet and duvet cover, triple what I'd normally spend but an investment as hopefully I will get years rather then months out of it :)

onahorsewithnoname · 10/11/2015 21:09

I don't use FC, it's the Poly cotton, I buy all sorts from everywhere but only cotton or linen is any good.
Sainsbo's don't last long tho, a couple of years max.

FiveShelties · 10/11/2015 21:09

I have Dorma, Sheridan, M & S and John Lewis bedding - they have been washed and tumbled dried for years - in fact I keep waiting for one of them to disintegrate as some of them are very old. I always buy my bedding when on sale so have never paid full price.

FinestGrundyTurkey · 10/11/2015 21:11

I got a lovely cheap cotton set from Lidl a few years ago - they wash beautifully so cheapness isn't an issue by itself. (but some visiting drunkard friend of DD1's puked on the duvet cover a few years ago, took it home "to wash it" & it was never seen again. the bastard)

Egyptian cotton sheets from matalan are fab, & I also have an amazing set from Ikea - not the really cheap ones, but a silky feeling cotton set

FinestGrundyTurkey · 10/11/2015 21:12

of the branded stuff I have, M&S & BHS are particularly nice.

nocoolnamesleft · 10/11/2015 21:13

I was most annoyed to have to bin a duvet cover this week, as I'd only had it for 5 1/2 years. I've got one set that are still going strong that are about 20 years old...think they were tkmax.

ChilliAndBint · 10/11/2015 21:17

I often but Matalan stuff in the sale. Fab quality really.

The cheapest Ikea stuff is really poor, almost transparent, by=t their more expensive linens are really good.

Doo you have a Boundary Way store near you? I sometimes by gorgeous stuff from their, quirky funky colours; granted, not to everyone's taste .

40 degree wash and air dry. Tumble driers wreck textiles,

MiddleAgeMiddleEngland · 10/11/2015 21:20

100% cotton, as many others have said. I would expect at least 10 years from sheets, although we are currently using some which are about 55 years old. Not that they have been used weekly in all that time, but have probably been used for around a total of about 30 years.

We stayed in a really cheap bunkhouse-type place a few years and they had bobbly polycotton sheets. They were clean but still felt horrible.

TalkinPeas · 10/11/2015 21:22

I hope you did not put it in your bin though ....
