To begrudge buying new bed linen every few months?

I usually spend about £25 for a duvet set, maybe £10 for a sheet. Within about 6 weeks the sheets go bobbly or the stitching comes open at the edges of the duvets and sheet.

Am I buying cheap crap?! If anybody could advise somewhere to buy decent bedding that would be great

Another option that will save fancy duvet covers is to use a flat top-sheet underneath the duvet, then you don't have to wash the cover very often. I think that's more realistic with more embellished styles.

TaintForTheLikesOfWe · 10/11/2015 16:49

Go to Drunken Mill, you won't give a rats arse what shape the bed linen is in then! Grin
I bought some flannelette bed clothes from La Redoute. Bobbles like a bugger at first but that settled down and boy it's sooo warm, fluffy and inviting. I have just ordered a second duvet cover as it's thick and takes a while to dry (no T dryer) in the winter. Can't beat a bit of flannel in the cold weather.

Check out Soak and Sleep. 200 count cotton sheets and duvet covers and 60 count pillow cases here, soft warm and silky, and last for ages.

PeasePuddingCold · 10/11/2015 16:57

Soak & Sleep, oh yes! And the Secret Linen shop.

TurnWifiOn · 10/11/2015 17:01

Another one here for Sainsburys, bloody brilliant,

I buy high thread count (at least 360 PR more), long staple cotton, White bed linens. Expensive but worth every penny. I used to buy Ralph Lauren, but switched to John Lewis or the White Company when I moved to Britain. They feel great and last forever, even washing at 90 degrees several times a year. The initial outlay is very high though.

Bumpsadaisie · 10/11/2015 17:17

Baffled by this - I've had mine about 10 years!

They were posh ones though.

RenterNomad · 10/11/2015 17:18

Another vote for cotton! Hanging straight to dry is okay, but I think the ironing really does make it last longer...

As for colour, I recently dyed a duvet colour for my son: two packets of Dylon "Tulip Red", and now it's a gorgeous, cosy red instead of a meh sort of light salmon. Smile

ElsieMc · 10/11/2015 17:20

Cotton is nicer but there is a lot more ironing. I have bought two George pure cotton 400 tc duvet sets recently and they feel great. However, they were on offer very cheaply at £12.50 and £15 and there are a few flaws in the fabric but for that price I am not too bothered.

I have had some Dorma cotton duvet covers that bobbled though but they were at the cheaper end of the scale for this brand.

I do like a change of duvet covers and make an occasional buy from George for the kids, the current wolf one in particular. Their sets are hit and miss but this one is good and washes well. I also like their autumn animals one,it looks very scandi and folksy at £12. Again, not too well made but it does look good and if it does twelve months then I am happy.

Worst ever duvet cover bought for my gs was the vile polyester Man Utd set and it was the official one.

chipsandpeas · 10/11/2015 17:22

i buy cheap sets from the likes of primark and asda and they have lasted years

jellyjiggles · 10/11/2015 17:23

Decent bedding lasts years! It's worth paying a bit more. Tk Maxx is good for bargains!

MuttsNutts · 10/11/2015 17:26

Wilkos do some really good quality cotton bedding.

BikeRunSki · 10/11/2015 17:29

You must be buying rubbish - you're not spending that much really. 100% cotton stuff washes and wears much, much better than poly mixes.

DD(4) uses a duvet cover that used to be mine! It had a few year off.

I have recently replaced the bedding we got as wedding presents 15 years ago, mainly because it was very wash faded. It was 100% cotton from John Lewis.

londonrach · 10/11/2015 17:32

100% cotton for all mine. Hate polywhatever (hardtospellforadyslexic) material as very sticky and sweaty in bed.

VestalVirgin · 10/11/2015 17:41

It is a price issue sometimes. I always use 100% cotton, and most duvet covers I have for years.
Then I once went and bought a cheap one, 100% cotton, that claimed to be satin. It got ripped apart the first time I washed it, before I even got to use it!

Merguez · 10/11/2015 17:49

Yes you are buying cheap crap.

I buy from the White Company and John Lewis and most of my stuff is still going after 10 years.

ErnesttheBavarian · 10/11/2015 18:03

I got a set from BHS when I went to uni in 1989. While the pattern does scream 1989, the set itself is still in good nick. Actually our worst set (and most expensive) was from John Lewis, but still lasted years.

What on earth are you doing?!

buntingbingo · 10/11/2015 18:11

I don't think you can beat asda. Amazing prices and lovely quality. They have some really great designs too. Asda home stuff is really brilliant.

Thecatknowsshesboss · 10/11/2015 18:54

Try Dawsons my sil recommended them to me and I got some lovely 100% Egyptian cotten sheets and duvets. They usually have special offers on as well.

Previously bought from Christy which lasted years and tesco which didn't.

Thecatknowsshesboss · 10/11/2015 19:03

Sorry they trade as justlinens on line

Noodledoodledoo · 10/11/2015 19:05

I have lots of all levels of quality but none are in that bad a shape after 6 weeks. None have cost more than £50 max for a double plus sheets etc

1 set from Roseby's I bought in 2001 - cotton and still going strong - stiched pattern used very regularly for about 12 years now in spare room

1 set from the Range - cost about £16 - fell apart after about 8 months - stiched on silk came away

1 set from Sainsburys 1 of 3 sets rotated - 2 years old fairly cheap still going strong, stiched on silk is fine.

2 sets from M&S 2 years old bit priceier but again still going strong!

NorksAreMessy · 10/11/2015 19:07

I buy ex-hotel pure cotton bedlinen.
Last for ages, soft, smooth, wash brilliantly, iron smooooooooth.
And some of the single duvets have little hand holes for easy bed making

fieldfare · 10/11/2015 19:17

I've got two lovely sets from John Lewis, one is 15 years old and looks brand new and is always complimented when people stay over in the spare room. They are a high thread count and cost around £100 per set. I wash bedding at 60C, but I'm not a fan of embellishments on the bedding so it's not an issue at at temp.
Other sets from IKEA, dunelm etc don't come up quite as nicely and seem to bobble quite quickly.

janethegirl2 · 10/11/2015 19:22

I'm sorry re the drunken mill, but it was the autocorrect on my phone.

Glad it's given everyone a laugh though.
