To not speak when not being addressed

If you were with two other people, say Mary and Bob, and Mary said 'Bob' at the end of every remark would you assume she was addressing Bob and not you?

No other cues either. Mary doesn't particularly look at either you or Bob when talking.

AIBU to not speak when Mary says 'Bob' at the end of every remark?

When he is there DH manages to occupy himself with the DC and it is mostly me who does the visits rather than both of us.

Yes, she still only addresses Bob when DH is there. DH doesn't reply either. He tried taking the piss once and got rapidly shushed by Bob.

How do I tell which it is Raptor? Very close with the Hyacinth.

Yes, Asking, Uncle B.

I remember that well Fink, FIL conducted every conversation he had with me like that when DC were babies. The twat. I was too exhausted to care much then, just glad he wasn't talking about pensions for once.

If she does it with other people then it's not about you, it's just general rudeness so that's OK then Wink

I'm also now imagining Blackadder overemphasizing the B in Bob (I need to get out more)

I might've been doing that too. Blush

Mary doesn't like you .
How can you stand it ? It must be very unpleasant .

WhereYouLeftIt · 10/11/2015 15:52

"I have to see them, Bob likes the DC and we don't have much family."
This appears to me to be the only reason you see them at all - because you are being nice to Uncle Bob. But -

"Yes, she still only addresses Bob when DH is there. DH doesn't reply either. He tried taking the piss once and got rapidly shushed by Bob."
So Uncle Bob knows fine well what his wife is doing. And doesn't make any effort to stop her being so fucking rude. Well, that's not on, Uncle Bob. If you like seeing the DC, then stop subjecting their parents to your wife's rudeness. Uncle Bob, why don't you visit the children on your own and leave your grumpy-arsed wife at home unbothered by your pesky relatives?

You really don't have to see them, you really don't. It is always a choice.

Interesting. I know a Bob and Mary and I never thought they were like this.

Very interesting.

KimSlazinger · 10/11/2015 16:29

I am the Bob in this situation with DGranny, and I hate it. Makes me feel like I'm in school or something and she thinks I'm not paying enough attention so keeps saying my name. Bloody talk to someone else for five minutes Mary!

FaFoutis · 10/11/2015 16:39

Bob is weak man.

Uncle Bob, why don't you visit the children on your own and leave your grumpy-arsed wife at home unbothered by your pesky relatives?
Thankfully he does this, we only see him with Mary 2-3 times a year. Christmas is one of them.

Does the Mary you know vote UKIP Doreen?

How exactly did you DH take the piss? Can you do the same yourself? Then at least you'll know Bob knows you find it annoying and you can roll your eyes at him from time to time.

FaFoutis · 10/11/2015 16:46

I can't remember, it was ages ago. I remember it being a very gentle ribbing for DH. Mary didn't hear it anyway.

I think Bob knows, he avoids eye contact with me when she is doing it.

I wonder if Mary just feels the need to show "ownership" of Bob because she's threatened by your blood tie, which is sad. Does she just ignore the kids then?

FaFoutis · 10/11/2015 17:08

Yes to the ownership. I have thought this before. She never says 'I', always 'we'. Even when it doesn't seem appropriate.

She swings between tickling and ignoring with the DC. I think the tickling is for Bob's benefit.
