to think that MN should be accessible to everyone?

Here are a few facts that I would like the MN community to know:

-Some people who use MN are not English. Many people who use MN did not start learning English as babies. They learnt as older children or adults. It is not easy communicating in another language.

-Some people who use MN have a learning disability. They may have difficulties expressing themselves clearly.

-Some people who use MN have dyslexia which can make writing accurately difficult.

-Some people who use MN have had little or no formal education. They may write poorly due to this. This is not their fault.

Speaking English as a second language is not a crime (actually it is a gift).
Having a learning disability, dyslexia or a lack of education is not a crime. None of the above is the person's fault.

Many people who write poorly are deeply ashamed about this.

Over the last year, I've seen a few posts that are badly written, comments by other posters are rude to say the least. It feels like we do not want people here unless they can write well. We don't want people with poor spelling, grammar or punctuation. How can this be right?!!

If you see a post written by someone who does not write well, try to focus on the actual message, they may well be in need of help! If you genuinely don't understand, either ignore the message (someone else may well understand it) or ask nicely for clarification.

Many people here have children with special needs. In some cases their children will never be able to write 'well', it must be upsetting for parents to see how MN tends to treat people who don't have a great grasp of written English.

If MN is the first place you have encountered people with reading and writing problems, that says a lot more about you than them.

Who decided that it is ok to make derogatory comments about people with poor written English?

Do you? That's nice. I have no time at all for the predictable and entitled 'Ive-been-here-a-hundred-years-and-know-everything' posters who have honed their twsttery skills to perfection in order to push the boundaries of the Talk Guidelines without being banned again

KittiesInsane · 10/11/2015 11:20

Vulcan, I've seen that paragraph many times, and every bloody time I think 'Why have they put the wrong letters in "research"?'

Won't somebody think of the proofreaders?

DeoGratias · 10/11/2015 11:22

I just about never point out the mistakes of others on line unless it's a thread about grammar and they got all their grammar wrong in the first place!

In general the British ethos is to be kind which is actually quite wonderful and most of the time people are kind on here. However in life and with our own children it is very important people know how it can damage them in some work and life contexts if they communciate badly and for them it is vital they are made aware of it. My son who is volunteering at a school was saying it is quite hard to get the balance right between correct a child who is reading (eg who drops ts or pronounces a word badly) and being encouraging.

I'm a pedant and proud.

So there.

ConsciousPilot · 10/11/2015 11:24

Well, if you have a posting style like AFs you are going to hurt some people deeply. Deeply hurt people are prone to going on the attack themselves.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 10/11/2015 11:25

ConsciousPilot it seems like you've got a bit of a chip on your shoulder, when it comes to long term members.

This same conversation happens all the time and i tell you why.

It is jealousy. Jealous of the people who keep the same name and forge friendships and make a name for being excellent people on certain boards.

Ive NC recently but not unrecognisably, to the people i 'hang' with on here.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 10/11/2015 11:30

Can't say I've noticed many of them.

Surely a 'constantly name-changing stalker' would be sussed, reported and banned? Wouldn't MNHQ be able to see, from their account, that they are name-changing for invidious reasons?

What bonkers thread?

You need to clarify whether you are talking about name-changers or PBPs. You mentioned someone stalking AF by frequently name-changing. Surely that is easily spotted by MNHQ?

ConsciousPilot · 10/11/2015 11:46

Whoever said such discussions are as a result of jealousy is deluded. To suggest Mumsnet is a cosy cohort of chums is a bit daft. I often think some of the more, erm, frequent posters must have few RL mates, such is their enormous investment in cyber ones.

Who cares really? Don't you have other, real life stuff going on to keep you stimulated? I don't mean to sound start but you in particular, Maryz, seem preoccupied with weeding out name-changers and PBPs. Why is that?

nomchangee · 10/11/2015 11:51

I agree that it's better to leave people's spelling and grammar alone. But one of the main reasons is the way it is guaranteed to derail any thread because of all the self-righteous types who pile in and spend several pages repeating each other telling off the person who raised the spelling/grammar issue. Honestly, once one or two people have told off the grammar pedant, is it really necessary for another hundred to say the same thing? Why not just move on at that stage and go back to the original point of the thread?

And, to be honest, threads like this one pop up all too often and attract the same self-righteous types who simply end up repeating the same points. Maybe time to give the entire topic a rest?
