to think that MN should be accessible to everyone?

Here are a few facts that I would like the MN community to know:

-Some people who use MN are not English. Many people who use MN did not start learning English as babies. They learnt as older children or adults. It is not easy communicating in another language.

-Some people who use MN have a learning disability. They may have difficulties expressing themselves clearly.

-Some people who use MN have dyslexia which can make writing accurately difficult.

-Some people who use MN have had little or no formal education. They may write poorly due to this. This is not their fault.

Speaking English as a second language is not a crime (actually it is a gift).
Having a learning disability, dyslexia or a lack of education is not a crime. None of the above is the person's fault.

Many people who write poorly are deeply ashamed about this.

Over the last year, I've seen a few posts that are badly written, comments by other posters are rude to say the least. It feels like we do not want people here unless they can write well. We don't want people with poor spelling, grammar or punctuation. How can this be right?!!

If you see a post written by someone who does not write well, try to focus on the actual message, they may well be in need of help! If you genuinely don't understand, either ignore the message (someone else may well understand it) or ask nicely for clarification.

Many people here have children with special needs. In some cases their children will never be able to write 'well', it must be upsetting for parents to see how MN tends to treat people who don't have a great grasp of written English.

If MN is the first place you have encountered people with reading and writing problems, that says a lot more about you than them.

Who decided that it is ok to make derogatory comments about people with poor written English?

VulcanWoman wtaf is this supposed to say?

"i cdnuolt blveiee taht I cluod aulaclty uesdnatnrd waht I was rdanieg. It is completely intelligible to me. A whole heap of gooble-d-gook nonsense!
I can't read it. And not sure what the point you are trying to make with this is. Actually I can't be arsed to have any one read this? Or yep I think you are all idiots?

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2015 09:37

I can read Vulcan's passage no problem. Confused Is it like the thing where you can curl your tongue? Grin

I don't really care how people post. Not keen on text speak, it's actually mentioned somewhere in the tips for posting not to use it I think.

Spelling mistakes can't really get wound up about. Paragraphs are nice but if you really can't read a block of text hide the thread.

VulcanWoman · 10/11/2015 09:47

Cantsee this is what it says:

I couldn't believe that I could actually understand what I was reading. Using the incredible power of the human brain, according to research at Cambridge University, it doesn't matter in what order the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first and last letter be in the right place. The rest can be a total, mess and you can read it without a problem. This is because the human mind does not read every letter by itself, but the word as a whole. Amazing, huh? Yeah and I always thought spelling was important! if you can read this forward it.

I think it's rude when, within the first few posts, the OP is being corrected or criticised for their spelling or grammar while the point of their post is being ignored. Some posts are difficult to read and understand but you can ask certain things to be clarified in politer ways than some choose to use.

And yes, bullying does happen on MN and people can get accused of trolling or being goady because they're expressing an opinion that others don't happen to like. I also think that there are a few regulars who get away with saying things that others would be reported/banned for. But that's a bit off topic.

CocktailQueen · 10/11/2015 10:43

I agree with you, OP, but if there is a post that is written in one long paragraph with no punctuation or grammar, then it can be hard to understand and respond usefully to.

But generally you should either just move on, or ask politely for clarification.

800 posts telling the poster her post is incomprehensible are not helpful.

VulcanWoman · 10/11/2015 10:44

LLAP to you too!

Totally agree with this though yes it is off topic. I have seen some much-revered regular posters say some things to women in toxic relationships that IMO are downright nasty.

Sparklingbrook · 10/11/2015 11:01

I would imagine there are a lot of people who name change daily who are nasty, they may be regular posters but you just don't know. Or they may be snippy namechangers.

welliesandleaves · 10/11/2015 11:03

YANBU. I seriously wonder what is wrong with people who feel the need to correct the grammatical and spelling errors of complete strangers on a discussion forum. Apart from being boring knobs, it is unbelievably rude.

And yes, as an Irish person I wish some posters wouldn't be so quick to jump on turns of phrases they're not used to hearing and draw ridiculous conclusions. I was accused of being snobby once for saying 'myself and the kids', as apparently that is not a usual way of speaking in the UK. Well, guess what, it is in Ireland.
And I saw a poster have her post deleted for telling someone not be be a 'dry shite'. Many Irish posters came on and explained that this was a perfectly normal expression in Ireland and not seen as abusive or offensive. The post remained deleted and the reporter continued to defend her complaint.

I agree there are some right bastards on mumsnet who seem to get away with all kinds. Their posting style is so entitled and predictable - and they're the ones who usually do all the reporting, because they can't stand less established posters being vocal or impassioned or, you know..like, disagreeing with them.

ConsciousPilot · 10/11/2015 11:10

Usual, it's the fact that the long-standing posters who think they have the monopoly on acceptable opinion never seem to get sanctioned when they speak twattily to others that gets my goat.

I'd rather they did bloody name-change, perhaps then I wouldn't find their reliance on their moniker quite so arrogant.

Blimey Conscious. Sounds like you should do some reporting yourself . Confused

ConsciousPilot · 10/11/2015 11:12

And do you call them out publicly, these snide name-changers?
