Fucking Christmas duvets??

I LOVE Christmas, so this is in no way a bah humbug thing, but does anyone else think it's getting way out of hand? Every year there is a new "thing"; Christmas jammies, Christmas eve boxes, advent calendar with actual toys (eg lego ones, playdoh ones etc), elf on the shelf, 24 advent Christmas books and now I see there are bloody Christmas duvet sets! When did these all become "traditions"? Only in the last 5 years? I sound like my mother! Christmas has become over-commercialised! AIBU or is it expensive enough without having to add to the expense! Imagine if you have more than 1 child! Is it competitive parenting? Is it over-compensation for shit parenting? Am I just being an old cow? Sorry I just saw the Christmas duvet tonight and it's proved to be my tipping point.

You can buy Christmas bathroom pedestal mats from BHS and Asda. As if regular pedestal mats (pee mats) weren't bad enough.

fuzzpig · 09/11/2015 19:29

I agree. I love Christmas but there is no need for all the extra. We do the Christmas Eve bits though - new pyjamas (not Christmassy, eg this year DS has a Big Hero 6 onesie) and then either a book or puzzle or DVD to wind down before bed. So that's still overkill by some standards I guess!

My house is cluttered enough though, without Christmas-specific things like duvet covers taking up much needed space. It's everywhere though, I'm always looking longingly at nice festive 'things' thinking oooooh I need that, before getting a hold of myself and walking away!

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2015 19:30

Nothing says Happy Christmas more than a festive piss mat Woo. Grin

AwfulBeryl · 09/11/2015 19:32

I haven't rtft, I have come to confess my sins so you can mock me, I am nice like that.
I have Christmas duvets for the dts, they're fucking lovely. Really nice sod cotton and not at all twee reindeers. We will put them on the week of Christmas and probably just use them as emergencies - sickness bugs etc until next year.

I was going to get a cover for us but we are getting a new bed and I wasn't sure of the size so didn't bother.
I am getting Christmas pyjamas too, preferably matching ones and a Christmas collar for the cat.

Ifiwasabadger · 09/11/2015 19:33

YABU I've just bought myself a Christmas duvet from next. It's grey with stars....actually v understated. I'm fucked if I'm buying DD one though..it's all about me and the super king Smile

BrandNewAndImproved · 09/11/2015 19:35

I always buy my dc new pyjamas but they're not Christmassy ones. This year they're having a pikachu and a charmander pokemon onesie each.

They are to look good for the fb photos Christmas morning GrinBlush

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2015 19:36

Ah yes the FB photos where you post pictures of your piles? Grin

sandylion · 09/11/2015 19:36

Quite a few people are saying "no one is making you buy anything" and of course that is true, but it's the things that are aimed specifically at children that makes me feel like a bit ragey.

Something I really hated was that last year we had a Christmas jumper day at school (primary teacher) and the wee scones who didn't have one just looked so dumped.

I post photos of the dc in their new pyjamas tearing into their piles. I'm not even embarrassed. It's only on MN people don't do it and hoik their judgy pants up.

I say every single year they won't be getting a lot and every single year the twitch hits haha.

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2015 19:42

In teen FB world the pictures of of all the unwrapped gifts tastefully arranged. Tall stuff at the back, clothes at the front and money splayed out in a semi circle. Grin

Complete with soppy thankful gushings to their parents that are in the same room.

BrandNewAndImproved · 09/11/2015 19:43

Grin the ultimate stealth boast using a thanks to show it off!

Greydog · 09/11/2015 19:44

I have a Christmas Duvet. The dog has a special coat. I have two tablecloths, both over 20 years old, and one of our tree decs was made by my son at primary school - it's a bit battered now, but it's fairly old (25 years!)

Hassled · 09/11/2015 19:51

Now I want Christmas loo roll and festive tampons with LED strings. I didn't want these things before I read the thread.

Actually I do think I need to get with the tat a bit more. I've spent bloody years trying to be tasteful and restrained and it's got me nowhere. This might be the year I put inflatable Christmas penguins on the roof.

reni2 · 09/11/2015 19:58

I understand, Hassled, I thought about getting an illuminated Rudolph for the garden, dc in favour, dh against. In my saner moments I can still see it would be wrong. Might buy the bog roll though.

MrsFrankRicard · 09/11/2015 20:06

I agree with you, I love christmas, I have christmas cushions, tablemats and towels which I have had for years but I draw the line at the bedding and that fucking stupid elf. On christmas eve we do new jammies and a book but no hamper full of stuff. Last year I bought a lego advent calendar and never again.

RJnomaaaaaargh · 09/11/2015 20:09

And just what the fuck exactly is wrong with pugs in antlers on bedding????

Dh is not impressed with the Xmas door mat. Not at all.

LimboNovember · 09/11/2015 20:12

hassled I am with you, I also need to lighten up the xmas mood.
DC put on these awful moving hats and reindeer ears, and everyone in homebase laughed and they laughed too, not sure if I can put myself through it though.

DM was great at the tacky gift to make people laugh. I didnt get the humour at the time but I do now Grin I have been eyeing up a vile elf jumper for DH to wear all december

RJnomaaaaaargh · 09/11/2015 20:13

I long for a spare kitchen cupboard so I can collect portmeiron Christmas tree China Blush

LimboNovember · 09/11/2015 20:13

Grin @ beryl

grey with stars sounds lovely.

MrsJorahMormont · 09/11/2015 20:14

:o at the video MrsDeVere

I LOVE Christmas. We spend most of Christmas itself away visiting relatives so my own little family bit has to start in early December. I will be doing a hamper for the start of the month with onesies and a couple of DVDs. If I can get cheap festive bedlinen I'll be all over it! Our DD is an only so we have to cram in as much Christmas twattery as we can before she's a teenager and mean about it all :o

MrsJorahMormont · 09/11/2015 20:14

I also admire the elf on a shelf fanatics but I'm not committed enough to see it through.

May I give you a tip....

If your tempted, get your own elf, we got ours from ikea, and she has only made ONE appearance so far. We found our own template letter from FC and used the heading and lay out and wrote our own explanation of why Elf was there which was mainly to become socialised, and learn what sort of presents the dc would like. If the elf got too naughty, send him/her straight back....we did it for 5 days and it was glorius fun! such fun!

Our elf drew on all our faces at night, put shaving foam all over the car to say merry christmas, did a green wee in the loo, and wrapped loo roll round our tree and then put all our knickers on it Blush in the letter we said you may or may not get another visit.

I am waiting now until toddler older. DD was amazed, amazed

LimboNovember · 09/11/2015 20:23

primal I think thats a lovely duvet cover, I am not a normal matalan shopper but they have got loads of brilliant stuff this xmas. I got all my wrapping paper form them.
