Fucking Christmas duvets??

I LOVE Christmas, so this is in no way a bah humbug thing, but does anyone else think it's getting way out of hand? Every year there is a new "thing"; Christmas jammies, Christmas eve boxes, advent calendar with actual toys (eg lego ones, playdoh ones etc), elf on the shelf, 24 advent Christmas books and now I see there are bloody Christmas duvet sets! When did these all become "traditions"? Only in the last 5 years? I sound like my mother! Christmas has become over-commercialised! AIBU or is it expensive enough without having to add to the expense! Imagine if you have more than 1 child! Is it competitive parenting? Is it over-compensation for shit parenting? Am I just being an old cow? Sorry I just saw the Christmas duvet tonight and it's proved to be my tipping point.

Op I am quite sure, quite positive that should I come and inspect your home and your family xmas I would find many things I would consider to be OTT and un necessary. Probably not just your xmas either but your house.

Do I like a book every day for xmas ? NO.

Do I like xmas eve hampers ? Yes.

Do I like Elf on shelf? The commercial version from amercia, no, my version, in my own way with own ideas, very much so.

Do I like xmas duvets - YES. I can't afford one for us but next have a gorgeous one this year...its good fun.

catrin many people will think your being ott with stockings...where does it start, where does it stop? Many think decorating houses is OTT...or more than one main present.

Has your DD ever had new nightware on xmas eve?

Two years ago I saw a lovely blue night dress with shoulder cape thing I decided to get it for dd then 6 and she adored it! posing by the tree and swirling in it, the next year I saw a red one, also with cape so decided to get it, she was over joyed at 7, and said " mummy you seem to get me a new night dress now and I love it" ( had not done it before)...this year I have deliberately got her a reindeer fleece from gap and its lovely and snuggly...so the point being, your dd doesnt give a shiny shite about - a new night dress Shock but other dc never had stockings and dont give a shiny shite about them....Shock some peoples dp never did xmas and dont give a shiny shite about it....

if you had never had something it is unlikely...you will give a shiny shite about it, but doesnt mean its not right, or wrong or necessary! My dd now loves the idea of a new night dress and she feels special in it!

The problem is people are stretching one day into a month's worth of crap. Its tiring and ridiculous.

LimboNovember · 09/11/2015 14:44

I did want a christmas duvet but my friend pointed out that it wouldn't match my curtains grin so that won't be happening

there are some lovely ones around this year, I did covert and then buy with vouchers the m and s tree in snow last year, it looked great one line but sadly looked rubbish close up in the room.

My room does lend itseldf to pale xmassy stuff though and I love our pale blue bedding with pale blue silk curtains and our white fluffy throw....

If I had the money and the house, our entrance hall would be like narnia, it would!!

RufusTheReindeer · 09/11/2015 14:50

limbo

M and s have a red and navy tarten one this year with a stag cushion wearing baubles that goes with it...i love it, but my curtains are orange check.

I will just content myself with my robin cushion (and the fairy lights dh puts round the bed head..makes it look like an elfs brothel)

LimboNovember · 09/11/2015 14:53
Grin

I hang my more expensive bables from our light fitting and this year have brought in sale ( last year) one of those stag light things from JL Grin.

paul

on the xmas thread many people find December a really really hard month ( dark) so looking forward to xmas, and all the shebang makes it more bearable for us.

AlpacaPicnic · 09/11/2015 15:03

I bought a festive duvet cover last year and I loved walking into my bedroom and seeing it. My room is normally quite dark so seeing the bright red, reindeer scandiwegian cover made me smile and I treated it as a practical decoration.
At least a duvet cover has a use. Christmas trees and baubles etc are just to look pretty but nobody is wringing their hands over those.

As many other people said, nobody is making anybody buy anything.

HopefulAnxiety · 09/11/2015 15:38

I do get that if you don't do the Jesus thing, festive tat (I don't mean tat in a derogatory way) is a fun thing to do at Christmas. For me it misses the point of Christmas, but nobody makes me buy Christmas loo roll! We've done Christmas pyjamas in my family for years though, not new at all. Tempted by the idea of brushed cotton duvets for winter generally but I'd want them on before Christmas! Those fleece bedding sets, don't they get very hot?? And so much static!

cranberryx · 09/11/2015 15:50

utterlyclueless
It's the new bedding Grin the white one with the mint and coral pattern - it's very warm and washed really well before I put it on.

HackerFucker22 · 09/11/2015 15:52

If you must have all that Christmas tat I love some of it but draw the line at adult bed linen and cushions then buy it cheap in the sales for next year.

Utterlyclueless · 09/11/2015 15:54

Cranberry
I was eyeing it up before and thought it might be really thin but you've changed my mind! Hopefully they'll have it in stock tomorrow

HackerFucker22 · 09/11/2015 15:54

Christmas pj's is a thing from my childhood - although as we were poor 80's kids so it wasn't actually festive pj's but new pj's that could be used all winter. I try to shop for similar for my dc....I begrudge paying a tenner for pj's they use once!! So I go for something wintery as opposed to blatant Christmas pj's.

Krampus · 09/11/2015 17:08

How exciting, I can have festive bedding

BaconAndAvocado · 09/11/2015 17:33

Yes, yes and yes!!

I have a box of Christmas story books that always comes out at the beginning of December, don't think I'd go as far as to buy new ones and wrap them!

Stanky · 09/11/2015 17:56

I have enjoyed reading this thread. :) I bought duvet sets for dc last year, I think that they were £4.99 each, and are personalised with their names on the pillow cases. I'll look forward to seeing them every year, when we use them for our Christmas sleep over at gp's house.

Wannabe2015 · 09/11/2015 18:42

I'm another one who turns my nose up at all the commercialism and emptiness of the modern Christmas season. (I'm a complete bore actually).

Until about December 2nd or 3rd. Then I turn. It all gets very undignified from then until January 8th.

zipzap · 09/11/2015 18:45

Sooo... How many of you that like all the christmasy stuff will be dressing up the toilet as Santa/Snowman/Elf etc?

I personally think the decal/sticker route is maybe the more hygenic option but some of the outfits available are really quite Xmas ShockXmas Grin

Gottagetmoving · 09/11/2015 19:07

Loving Christmas doesn't mean you have to buy a load of unnecessary crap. Presents, a tree and Christmas dinner, Anything else is pretentious nonsense, apart from alcohol which is totally necessary.Grin
Bloody christmas patterned pyjamas and stupid festive house ornaments all over the place are a sign of madness.
People love shopping and wasting money and Christmas is their excuse.
Took me years to realise what a complete con it all is. We enjoy a real Christmas now and have no stress and save money.

EsmesBees · 09/11/2015 19:08

My mum bought us four Christmas hand towels one year. I put them out dutifully every year to make the bathroom look festive, and then the rest of the year I resent the amount of space they take up in the cupboard.

oobedobe · 09/11/2015 19:09

THIS!!!
"People love shopping and wasting money and Christmas is their excuse."

(I know I do ;) )

BrandNewAndImproved · 09/11/2015 19:11

I'm another sensible boring knob until the twitch....

Adult duvet covers are a step to far though however I like the twinkly canvases Grin

LimboNovember · 09/11/2015 19:14

hacker I know mine used to come from market stalls and one market was in gorgeous town in derbyshire I remember loving them so much, cream viscose I think with lace....

I also dont care what patterns or prints they wear to bed! they can wear their night ware all year.

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2015 19:19

They have this beauty in B&M.

LimboNovember · 09/11/2015 19:20

BrandNewAndImproved · 09/11/2015 19:26

I had a green one like that last year sparkling from the pound shop.

I chucked it in the bin after Christmas as I didn't want to keep something that had been on my toilet!

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2015 19:28

Grin Brand I may get a few and when I visit friends pop it on when I use their loos. Spread some Christmas joy.
