Fucking Christmas duvets??

I LOVE Christmas, so this is in no way a bah humbug thing, but does anyone else think it's getting way out of hand? Every year there is a new "thing"; Christmas jammies, Christmas eve boxes, advent calendar with actual toys (eg lego ones, playdoh ones etc), elf on the shelf, 24 advent Christmas books and now I see there are bloody Christmas duvet sets! When did these all become "traditions"? Only in the last 5 years? I sound like my mother! Christmas has become over-commercialised! AIBU or is it expensive enough without having to add to the expense! Imagine if you have more than 1 child! Is it competitive parenting? Is it over-compensation for shit parenting? Am I just being an old cow? Sorry I just saw the Christmas duvet tonight and it's proved to be my tipping point.

Xmas duvets seem a jolly good way of making your bedroom christmassy without decorations if you are so inclined, by the time the xmas period is over they'd be due a wash anyway, pop them away for next year... seems good to me.

Poundland currently have some Reindeer cushions in (big ones) that look great and are really practical with a baby in our home, I'd all for practical furnishings you can put away for another year instead of tinsel and little fiddly jingly jangly things :)

Duckdeamon · 09/11/2015 12:36

The highlight of my school year used to be decorating my violin with scrappy tinsel for the annual festive concert. orchestra geek Smile

YANBU. I'm sure I saw christmas curtains the other day. What's next? Will people be wallpapering their entire homes in red fairisle print in November, then peeling it off in January? It's getting insane.

My SIL is already getting the decorations up and I'm being accused of being a scrooge because I'm not feeling the festive spirit yet! I have no idea how she affords the endless parade of days out at theme parks, winter wonderlands, christmas eve presents more extravagant than my DS gets for his actual gifts, and more themed crockery and cutlery than I have got everyday!

It seems if you don't join in with the early hysterics, you get left out. Our garden centre has a lovely breakfast with santa thing we went to a couple of years back. I thought I'd check in Nov for tickets and it's already sold out. Called up and they'd apparently sold the tickets around mid October. Last year I couldn't even get an advent calender at the end of Nov as shops had gotten rid of most of them. It gets more insane each year.

I agree with what someone said earlier in the thread about where on earth do people who buy into all this Xmas duvets, Xmas cushions, Xmas mugs, life-size flashing reindeer and dancing snowmen store all this stuff??

Someone I work with is a bit like this. She only lives in a small 3 bed semi with her husband and 2 children so it's not as though she has a spare room, cellar or annexe for it all.

Mind you, she's also someone who feels it's important that her boys have mountains of presents for birthdays and Xmas so maybe her house is filled to the rafters with stuff generally.

dementedma · 09/11/2015 13:06

Do you know that for every Christmas tree decorated before the end of November, an elf drowns a baby reindeer?

My friend bought me a christmas cushion for my birthday, i have just bought a robin one for my bedroom

I did want a christmas duvet but my friend pointed out that it wouldn't match my curtains Grin so that won't be happening

My living room looks like santa vomited in it, there are 5 full sized christmas trees in the house and the only room with out anything chrismassy in it is the bathroom....give me time

Oh and the decorations are going up in the last weekend in november as the rest of the weekends are too busy (thats a lie....i just like putting them up early)

Christmas mugs are in the attic but will be swapped for normal mugs at the end of November

Masses of christmas movies to watch

I do like christmas, dh loves christmas as well but prefers a more minimalist approach to decorating....tough Grin

Garlick · 09/11/2015 13:27

ExploraDora Grin Love it!

Utterlyclueless · 09/11/2015 13:33

Am I the only one that doesn't think Christmas Pjs is a new 'tradition' Blush

cranberryx · 09/11/2015 13:37

I am not ashamed to admit that I have a christmas duvet cover on my bed right now (well, more wintery-fairisle pattern no santas or anything)

It's from primark, it's brushed cotton and it's so warm! Grin

Utterlyclueless · 09/11/2015 13:39

Cranberry is that the new bedding from primark?!

Pranmasghost · 09/11/2015 13:39

I have ordered two Christmas cushion covers for the living room just now and it is all YOUR fault :)

lardyscouse · 09/11/2015 13:41

[Are there Christmas tampons yet? ]

Only for the Christmas period.

reni2 · 09/11/2015 13:45

I love spotting the odd decoration out. 'Tis a family Christmas tradition. My mum is a big decorator of all seasons, there is always some sort of spring theme/ autumnal/ Halloween/ Christmas/ Easter you name it. We visit at Christmas and try to find a forgotten pumpkin- or flower- themed item. Extra points if you find an Easter bunny. There is always at least one Smile. Typing this I wonder if she deliberately leaves one of each for her 35-45 yo "children" to find

reni2 · 09/11/2015 13:46

Drum roll for lardyscouse's Christmas period Grin

bendybrickpumpkinpatch · 09/11/2015 13:48

We watch the snowman every xmas eve in pjs and order chinese food. Thats it ! I didnt realise I was depriving my children quite so much !

BondJayneBond · 09/11/2015 13:51

I saw some Christmas Pudding bin bags for sale a few days ago. So the bin bag looks like a Christmas Pudding once you tie it up.

We have wheelie bins around here. The bin men won't collect bin bags not hidden away in the wheelie bin. So these bin bags struck me as one of the most pointless Christmas themed things available.

G1veMeStrength · 09/11/2015 13:53

I love Christmas and traditions. But I hate wasteful cheap shitty crap. And I don't have room to keep spare bedding/plates/house stuff that is only used at Christmas.

Sallystyle · 09/11/2015 13:53

I got a lovely Xmas duvet, penguins and goodness, I can't remember what the other animal is called now.. it's a white and fluffy and wintery animal... Complete brain fart.

Anyway, I love it.

Sallystyle · 09/11/2015 13:55

Polar bears!

DieRosen · 09/11/2015 14:01

I don't mind a bit of madness around Christmas time. I presume a lot of our traditions and customs started off by looking a bit mad or OTT.

But I agree that it does seem to have gone completely crazy in recent years and a lot of the lovely old customs seem to be getting drowned out in our eagerness to make every Christmas blingier and louder and more commercialised than the last.

starlight2007 · 09/11/2015 14:15

We have a Christmas duvet for Ds...He loves it when it goes on the bed..Hopefully encourages him to stay in bed.

The kitchen roll is usually reduced in January which is always an added bonus

Sparklingbrook · 09/11/2015 14:34

I saw those in B&M yesterday Bond. I tutted. they were with the Christmas salt and pepper pots. Hmm
B&M have two aisles of pointless Christmas tat. I wonder who buys it all?

RufusTheReindeer · 09/11/2015 14:39
