My grandma used to make the most perfect egg and chips. Double fried, hand-cut chips done in beef dripping. Perfect eggs, fried over-easy. Slices of white bread, thick with butter, for chip-butty making and egg-dipping purposes. Just....heaven.

To her, it was a "cheat's tea" - something she made when she didn't have the time/energy/money to make something "better", and she never understood why we were all so enthusiastic about it. But it was just delicious. If I could have it for my last meal, I'd die happy.

bertsdinner · 08/11/2015 20:26

Love egg and chips, maybe a couple of sausages on the side.

bumbleymummy · 08/11/2015 20:30

Yes to bread with LOTS of butter. I just think it's one of those lovely 'cosy' meals. Glad I'm not alone! :)

We love it here too. It's my "go to" thing for when I don't have anything else. I always feel a bit guilty giving it to the family because it's a bit easy and simple but they all get super excited about it! :)

Marshy · 08/11/2015 20:36

But berts that's sausage egg and chips which is a completely different thing Grin

trollkonor · 08/11/2015 20:38

Philedelphia with chips? Now thats an idea. The garlic philly goes well on baked eggs instead of cream.

DickDewy · 08/11/2015 20:40

I have never had egg and chips on my life! Am I missing out? It sounds revolting.

SwedishEdith · 08/11/2015 20:41

YANBU - especially leaving the yolk til last and then piercing it and mopping it all up with the last chips.

SenecaFalls · 08/11/2015 20:44

I love it. It's not a standard combination in the US, but I discovered it when I was a student in the UK. It used to be on cheap cafe menus, and I ordered it all the time, but I no longer see it when I go to the UK.

I have never eaten a fried egg, either!

I would be embarrassed to tell you what dh said our 'go to' quick supper is! (I asked him if he'd ever had egg and chips as a quick meal..)

There are people who've never had egg and chips or even a fried egg?! ShockShockShock

bumbleymummy · 08/11/2015 20:53

What was it Dick? :)

I actually had poached eggs instead of fried.

This thread has brought back a terrible memory from my past, I'll try to get through the sharing without crying.

I met a lovely woman online and the first time I went to her house was for tea. She said she was making egg and chips, how happy I was.
We sat in the living room chatting away etc. Then she insisted I stay there whilst she made tea. She even buttered me some bread.
All excited she brought it in to me on a tray.... I remember it well.
Golden chips, beautiful.
Beans, stunning.
A........ A....... An Omelette...... I almost wept into my bread. But I braved it and smiled.
Weren't till we were married I told her the error of her ways.

Notimefortossers · 08/11/2015 20:54

DickDewy now you have to tell us Grin

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 08/11/2015 20:57

so on the odd occasion we have this I get mine from the fish and chip shop a portion costs £1.70 Shock but so worth it

with a crusty buttered roll and a cup of tea

delicious

DickDewy · 08/11/2015 20:58

OK - dh (who does all of the cooking and fancies himself as a bit cheffy) said our go to quick supper is -

'brie and cranberry with rocket on toasted ciabatta'!

This is true, we eat this about twice a week, but really.

bumbleymummy · 08/11/2015 21:01

Grin Dewy. Sounds lovely!

I don't think I can face the egg bit. My dcs have a runny egg in the middle of their pizzas

Janeymoo50 · 08/11/2015 21:06

Great hangover cure. Love egg and chips. I worked overseas for years and my mum often cooked me a fave meal my first night home, egg and chips was one of them.

trollkonor · 08/11/2015 21:08

One of the things I like about going to the Atlantic coast of Spain is being able to go out and have eggs and some sort of fried potato, with peppers or mushrooms. As a none meat lover it is bliss.

SumThucker · 08/11/2015 21:10

My favourite meal
