To be disturbed by the "Prepping" board.

Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

Yes I wasn't too impressed with the preppers who were dismissive of the OP's anxiety.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/11/2015 00:47

I'm quite appalled at the posters who think it's big and clever to throw vile names and mental health insults towards other posters. Particularly when LEM started the thread to talk about anxiety.

Tapirbackrider · 09/11/2015 01:44

No 'particularly' about it, there's been nastiness from both sides of this particular argument.

The very first reply to the OP mentions 'feeding delusions' and the first twenty or so use words including bonkers, weird, bizarre, disturbing...all directed against posters participating on the prepper board.

I happen to agree with Armchair's post at 21.21.

Well, we bulk buy certain staples that last us about a year to save money. (Rice, sugar, baking supplies, instant noodles, packets of noodles, canned veggies). So we'd never go hungry for a while if society suddenly collapsed, but we certainly would get sick of eating rice and noodles all day every day. We already get sick of eating rice and noodles to supplement meals to make them last

purpleponcho · 09/11/2015 04:42

Rice and noodles won't help you when the water / power run out, though.
Energy bars, Weetabix and other things that don't require heating would be of some use if you are without utilities for some time.

misses point of very silly thread

Senpai · 09/11/2015 05:07

Eh, I'd barter my rice and noodles with neighbors for water. Grin

We all get along on our street. We'd make it through. I didn't exist on an island of one before an apocalypse, I doubt I'll exist on an island of one after.

But if we're talking realism, in my area I'm more likely to be snowed in. It's happened before, so I suppose if it came down to it I could melt some snow to cook rice and noodles in a backyard fire. Otherwise, in a simple power outage, we'd just drive to my parents and wait it out at their place where they probably still have power until our area is fixed. :)

purpleponcho · 09/11/2015 07:21

OK, I think you're going to be OK. Like the kid sister in "Children of the Dust." You have the survival instinct.

Seriously, though, you do have a room full of guns and grenades and bazookas, though, right? Grin

witsender · 09/11/2015 07:56

I don't think we will need to be self-sufficient any time soon. But I do think that some things will become scarce and/or expensive. Being a bit more self-sufficient and living lightly insulates you slightly from that.

ISpidersmanYouMeanPirate · 09/11/2015 08:10

I've been wondering whether to bother posting this, but as I got the tip from MN itself years ago, I thought I'd pass it on.

The line that got me thinking was: "You're standing outside in the middle of the night, in the pouring rain with all your family, watching your house burn down. What do you wish you had with you?"

And that was the start of my OFRS.

It is basically a camping rucksack that I keep in a wardrobe in my bedroom (I'm in a flat so no running up stairs to grab it). It has cash, a change of clothes for everyone, an external hard drive with all our photos backed up, and various copies of important documents. Plus rain ponchos, a first aid kit and a washbag with toiletries for everyone.

I've added various things to it over time, but it is the bag I would grab if I had only minutes warning to evacuate.

I also keep the sling in the bedroom in case we have to evacuate in the night and I need to carry the toddler.

Zetetic · 09/11/2015 10:30

It is great to see that this thread has become more friendly and is focussing on practical things to prepare for winter. Smile

I've also got a torch by my bed which has come in handy for the odd power cut at night. I bought a cheap fire box for precious photos and negatives.

squoosh · 09/11/2015 10:31

'Do you think you could all hold back on the accusations of mental illness, being ridiculous and generally vile specimens of humanity?
'

Oh the irony. Calling for peace and love and in the same breath calling people vile specimens of humanity!

Zetetic · 09/11/2015 10:42

sigh Sad

squoosh · 09/11/2015 10:43

Sorry Zetetic, I'll zip it now!

Zetetic · 09/11/2015 10:46

Thanks. Much appreciated. Smile Smile

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/11/2015 10:48

squoosh I wasn't too impressed with the preppers who were dismissive of the OP's anxiety

Well that's a bit of irony in itself; since a lot of Preppers prep because they are anxious about future events. The OP doesn't have the monopoly on anxiety!

NotDavidTennant · 09/11/2015 10:48

'But I do think that some things will become scarce and/or expensive.'

What kind of things will become scarce and why?

Zetetic · 09/11/2015 10:56

Probably depends what part of the world you live in. Found this article - lol at the Lib Dem MP's. Can I survive without chocolate? Nooo Wink

i100.independent.co.uk/article/essential-things-you-had-no-idea-the-world-was-running-out-of--e1NPcrAC0

witsender · 09/11/2015 12:55

I think energy prices will rise. Fuel. And more than likely the cost of food too, as we have a rising world population and simply the cost of transporting food worldwide when fuel costs go up will have a knock on effect on pricing. As such, we grow our own where we can, and are working towards our own energy sources through solar etc.

Of course, none of this is true prepping as such, just an interesting diversion.

101handbags · 09/11/2015 13:19

I didn't realise mumsnet even had a prepping board. I thought you meant it was a board about getting prepared for Xmas by beautifying oneself.

warmastoast · 09/11/2015 14:02

Just want to counter the whole 'scoffing at OP' presumption which seems to have stemmed from a negative misunderstanding of a comment early in the thread and has since been unfairly established as fact. (Also many people reasonably suggested the responsibility is on the user to hide any thread or board that makes her feel uncomfortable.) This is in contrast to the numerous offensive comments labelling posters on the preppers board as 'batshit' 'bonkers' 'paranoid' etc.

I don't think this proof of insensitivity should be based on the misinterpretation of a winky face..

ThroughThickAndThin01 Sat 07-Nov-15 23:12:26: She should come on to thecPreppers topic and discuss her anxiety there Wink

MitzyLeFrouf Sat 07-Nov-15 23:13:52: That's nice. Take the piss out of someone's anxiety.

ThroughThickAndThin01 Sat 07-Nov-15 23:14:56: I'm not.

MitzyLeFrouf Sat 07-Nov-15 23:15:47: Your winky face says otherwise I'm afraid.

ThroughThickAndThin01 Sat 07-Nov-15 23:17:01 : We prep, because we're concerned (anxious?). If the op is concerned or anxious, then being prepared is the right way to go. Surely.

squoosh · 09/11/2015 14:07

Misinterpreted in your opinion.

buildingamystery · 09/11/2015 14:15

This is a real thing now? Bunch of oddballs comes to mind.

warmastoast · 09/11/2015 14:19

and according to the poster themself

Ok I'm done wasting my energy - will get back to teaching myself to weave.. in case I need to make my own fishing or mosquito nets Wink

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/11/2015 14:24

Bunch of oddballs comes to mind

Nice.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 09/11/2015 14:28

So it's down to a winky face? I'm sorry. I thought I was being jovial on a thread that was all too serious. I can see it has been misinterpreted and I'm sorry that it was, it wasn't meant to take the piss, just lighten the mood. I'm sorry. I hope that's clear.
