Is this a thing now?

Is there really a need to be stockpiling food, medicines and creating a bolt hole?

Am i missing something? Seriously (this is not a light-hearted thread), i suffer from anxiety and this is really disturbing me.

Hopefully people have just been watching too much walking dead.

And when word gets around that I have supplies, I'd get raided and end up with nothing. And the people who I shared my food with originally will still die, the only difference I make to the situation by sharing is that I'll die as well

Oh for the love of God. Get a grip. What do you think you are an extra in Mad Max?

SalemSaberhagen · 08/11/2015 16:56

Do you have links through? I've never heard about that before, will be an interesting read.

Does anyone else find the term "prep" really twee and embarrassing?

It makes me feel the same way as I do each time someone on here uses the term "san pro".

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 16:57

To be honest, I would rather die any tinned peaches in someone's damp cellar with Sellotape around the window

Let the preppers have their separate topic, which can be hidden more easily than random threads in Aibu or Chat.
I've not thought of it as "prepping", but I keep several weeks food, plus other emergency supplies, in my cellar.
So, I'll have a read there, see what I've overlooked.

Central & local government resources might take significant time to reach all parts of the country, after e.g.
. an extreme climate event
. financial meltdown, national or international
. National Grid or fuel shortfall
. hacking critical systems.

Many no longer have access to extended support networks of family and community - the UK has its most socially isolated population in history. Some don't care enough to invite close family members for Xmas, so would probably leave them on their own for those 2 weeks or so.

Many people take for granted the complex chain that has to be in place before they can
. turn on the lights, the heating, oven and there is electricity & gas 24/7
. turn on the kitchen tap and drinking water flows out
. go to the shops and they aren't closed for several days
. travel and the roads aren't blocked by snow / floods
. withdraw cash or do online banking - because the banks haven't shut down or restricted cash for several days.

I'm pretty sure the people in Sarajevo had a vague idea that a war was happening before it all went tits up. Did they think they would be cut off and sniped going to get water? I really think they didn't. I assume you didn't read my link about the Cascadia fault. I live in an earthquake zone. Our GOVERNMENT tells people to prep for at least 72 hours. Doing a little more is just 'belt and braces' IMO.

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 16:58

Now there's an idea for a thread

DontHaveAUsername · 08/11/2015 16:59

"Don't - actually it is VERY hard to imagine a situation in a 1st world country in the 21st century where there would be an 'emergency' which led to vast swathes of the population literally starving to death and hoping to rob their neighbours who had 'prepared' Can you point me to a situation where that has happened or even nearly happened?."

I'm not talking about vast swathes of the entire country starving, my scenario was just about a localized situation a town where people are starting to feel the effects of starvation because they are cut off from the outside world for a short while. Look at New Orleans in the aftermath of Katrina. It was only a few days before government help arrived, but in that time people were literally dying in the street through lack of water, those who had nothing were stealing from those who had, looting was going on throughout the city, people were screaming for help from the government to save their children. When the government did arrive, they had to have the national guard escort the aid convoys in because people were so desperate for food and water they had become very violent. This was after a few DAYS of isolation from the outside world. And it was in a modern 21st century 1st world city.

While we won't get a hurricane in this country, it's easy to imagine some kind of local crisis where the effect is the same - A community being cut off from the outside world for several days. So I don't think it's paranoia to prepare for such an emergency when it's happened before and we've seen just how terrible things can get after just several days of isolation.

I hate sanpro wecan.

Dont you speak very matter of factly about letting children starve to death in your imaginary, cut off from the world for 2 weeks, scenario.

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 17:02

it might be like Kimmy Schmidt

With thsoe DRESSES

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 17:03

maybe with RELISH salem

IrisVillarca · 08/11/2015 17:04

I'll have already thrown a bin through the window and taken all the bread, usual.

MaudGonneMad · 08/11/2015 17:04

The Argentinian economic crisis didn't result in mass starvation Confused

Enjolrass · 08/11/2015 17:07

People seem really upset at people who dare to 'prep'

Apparently preppers are fantasists. But it's perfectly valid to argue about whether they would share if it happened.

Why does it matter if it's never going to happen?

SalemSaberhagen · 08/11/2015 17:07

You said it's googleable through but I can't find anything that tallies with the description given.

Indeed brenda. Pity I'm a unscrupulous looter who would smash her cellar door down to get a tin of beans for DD who doesn't even like beans but it's the apocalypse damn it

DontHaveAUsername · 08/11/2015 17:08

"Dont you speak very matter of factly about letting children starve to death in your imaginary, cut off from the world for 2 weeks, scenario."

Yes I do, and that's because I know that I can't save them, they will die no matter what I do. If they are starving and I give them one meal, that won't sustain them indefinitely, it will just prolong their suffering for another few days or weeks. They will still die because they don't have any food. The only thing that I can change is whether or not I die with them, and I would rather that I survive. Some people have said they would rather die themselves than see someone else starve, that's up to them - If they wanted to do that I guess they could just give away whatever supplies they have to someone else, that would seem to be the best way for them to go about that aim.

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 17:08

loads of myths persist about Katrina too

BrendaandEddie · 08/11/2015 17:09

i dont think you starve to death in 2 weeks from what I know.
