To think Mumsnet has ruined a lot of songs for me

Every time I heard a song I keep thinking of what Mumsnet posters would say about it. Like, for example, I was listening to Pink's 'Just Give Me a Reason' this morning, and there's the bit at the start where she says he's been talking in his sleep, saying things that he never says to her (affair), and then he chimes in and says:

I'm sorry I don't understand
Where all of this is coming from
I thought that we were fine
Your head is running wild again
My dear we still have everything
And it's all in your mind

And I just thought, 'He's gaslighting her!!! What a wanker. LTB!!!'

I also thought similar when listening to Nick Jonas's 'Jealous' when he says things like, 'I don't like the way he's looking at you. I'm starting to think you want him too', 'You're too sexy, beautiful... that's why I still get jealous' 'It's my right to be hellish'. He sounds utterly controlling, entitled and emotionally abusive. LTB.

Most pop songs don't bear too much analysis, do they? :)

ForChina · 03/11/2015 08:54

True. Was also getting the rage at One Direction for their 'Everybody wanna steal my girl' one.

'Find another one cos she belongs to me'. Um, no she doesn't actually.

Yup. I heard "Don't you want me" on the radio yesterday , and I can never believe somebody actually made that song.

Abidewithme3 · 03/11/2015 10:02

'Don't you want me'is my favourite reminder of my fantastic teens.

That an 'come on Eileen'.

Neither bare strict investigation of the lyrics though. Grin

AnyoneButAndre · 03/11/2015 10:05

Don't you want me is ok I reckon because her POV is very clearly put across and she comes across as reasonable.

HildaWazzo · 03/11/2015 10:08

Don't You Want Me is a deliberate portrayal of a controlling and insecure man though, isn't it? You get the two sides of the story too. Totally different to Nick Jonas' scary lyrics Grin

Crazypetlady · 03/11/2015 11:58

I don't usually analyse lyrics this much sometimes songs do jump out to me as a good or bad eaning. I detest blurred lines I have made people turn it off Blush

ForChina · 03/11/2015 12:13

I detest blurred lines too. I also get tetchy about songs at children's discos if they are inappropriate. I'm a right barrel of laughs.

My dh hates it that I ruined the song like a prayer by madonna because I read on mumsnet the real meaning behind it!

I also hate the cheerleader song (can't remember who sings it though)-the singer portrays himself as a sex god who could have any woman Confused

ChipInTheSugar · 03/11/2015 12:47

Ha! I heard Dolly Parton's "Jolene" at weekend and thought of MN!

abbysgothboots · 03/11/2015 13:03

1D's 'What makes you beautiful':

You don't know you're beautiful- That's what makes you beautiful

So, the girl is pretty, but lacks the self-esteem to see herself as attractive.
And he finds her lack of confidence appealing. Future EA boyfriend Grin

Yep, thought of MN!

KittyLovesPaintingOhYes · 03/11/2015 13:06

Currently got the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles theme as an earworm but have yet to analyse it for MN content - will give me something to do this afternoon Grin

Bloody Ds and his turtle obsession...

Binglesplodge · 03/11/2015 13:14

I can't remember the thread, but mumsnet has ruined Tiny Dancer for me as I can only hear it as Tiny Wanker after one mum told a story of meaning to call her toddler a "whiny tinker" but getting her words a bit wrong...

squoosh · 03/11/2015 13:35

Madonna's Erotica was changed forever for me when I was told the lyrics are actually 'Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, put your hands all over my body'.

squoosh · 03/11/2015 13:37

But as someone already said, few songs stand up to rigorous investigation.

squoosh · 03/11/2015 13:37

MN is obsessed with that Adele song for some reason.

ForChina · 03/11/2015 13:52

Which one? Adele properly pisses me off. I'm surprised her ex hasn't got a restraining order on her yet.

Her latest one where she sings that she must have called a thousand times to apologise. How about just not calling him repeatedly?

I also remember the lines, 'I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited but I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it' and when I heard that I imagined some MN character (AF perhaps) saying, 'Yes you could fight it - you chose not to. Take responsibility for your own actions'.

Yes that one.

People on MN are obsessed with that song!

squoosh · 03/11/2015 13:55

Sorry. the one you quoted. Someone Like You.

squoosh · 03/11/2015 13:56

There a million and one stalker type 'love songs' but that one gets singled out all the time.

KittyCatKittyCat · 03/11/2015 13:58

Argh I get this with Little Mix's Magic potion or whatever it's called, and thought if a guy sang it it would be super creepy, and how it's a bit of a double standard, then someone did cover it on a radio live lounge or something like it. It bothers me, and it wouldn't have done before Mumsnet. Grin

MinesAPintOfTea · 03/11/2015 14:15

What is the meaning of like a prayer? I haven't seen that...

ForChina · 03/11/2015 14:15

I tell you what else is creepy, Lionel Richie's video for 'Hello'. He's a teacher and she's a student (ok at a college or uni, but still yuck). She's disabled (so potentially vulnerable) and he's stalking her all over the place mooning over her, and then he calls her at home (inappropriate), says nothing for ages and then suddenly blurts out, 'Hello, is it me you're looking for?' She should have replied, 'Er, you called me, mate!'\

Call Me by Blondie (not a video, an analysis of reasonableness)
