to hate it when people write "Xmas"?

It is, after all, a festival about Christ.

Putting an "x" instead of His name is lazy and disrespectful.
If you don't want a Christian Christmas, refer to the "holidays" instead.

Pfft. It's NOT a festival about Christ anymore, though, is it? It's about how much stuff you can get your parents to give you through the facade of a fat man dressed in red.

I write Xmas specifically for that reason. It's not about Christ any more. Plus I'm not religious.

Happy xmas to you to

AloraRyger · 02/11/2015 17:53

What about Chrimbo? [santa]

feckityfeck · 02/11/2015 17:53

Isn't X a recognised symbol for Christ? All medieval or something.

Also, what other posters said about it not being about christ. It's about food.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 02/11/2015 17:53

Meh, it's shorter...

trixymalixy · 02/11/2015 17:54

Deja vu on this one.

This thread happens every year many times. X means christ.

Really?

F* You and a Happy New Year..... Grin

MollyCarpenter · 02/11/2015 17:56

Isn't it greek, chi or something and therefore an acceptable abreviation since forever?
I vaguely remember learning something about it at school.

Oey....

MamaLazarou · 02/11/2015 17:58

YABU. Choose not to be offended by it, life will be easier.

PotteringAlong · 02/11/2015 17:59

But Xian is a valid shortening of Christianity. I used to use it all the time in theology lectures and still use it now (RE teacher) in a level lessons

FartemisOwl · 02/11/2015 17:59

I'm a pagan, so to me it's Winter Solstice anyway. But if I have to send out cards and crap, I'll write Xmas if I want to. If such a stupid thing offends anyone, I'm happy for them to let me know and I won't waste my time or money in future. Win-win!

VikingVolva · 02/11/2015 17:59

X has been a code used by Christians for centuries, especially during times of persecution.

I don't think you'll get very far in persuading most denominations to abandon it.

(and YABU for starting an Xmas thread in the main boards this early on).

IoraRua · 02/11/2015 17:59

Lolol.
It's based on a pagan festival, not originally Christian.
Happy Xmas :)

CocktailQueen · 02/11/2015 17:59

As others have said, X is a recognised symbol for Christ. And we've had this thread before!

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 02/11/2015 18:00

Xmas Xmas Xmas

Fluffyears · 02/11/2015 18:00

I don't like the way it looks. X is a standard symbol for Christ but I think it looks awful, then again each to there own and all that.

MaidOfStars · 02/11/2015 18:00

Nope.

chantico · 02/11/2015 18:00

If you're pagan, aren't you celebrating Yuletide?

Cards could say 'Have a Cool Yule' and you could make lots of bad jokes about logs.
