Going off another post....what is the best advice that you have received from parents (or anyone else really) advice that you live by and that you will pass on to your children/ friends etc.

Mine are;

  1. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
  2. Aim to have a wage that matches your age.
And
  1. Always apologise for your part to play in arguments etc. Be the bigger person.

Can't say I always apologise but I do try.....hehe

Mine is gonna sound silly compared to some of these but it's one I read on MN. I use people's names frequently when speaking to them, ie "Yes Rachel" "Thanks Rachel" etc and I have found since I have more pleasant conversations with people

PicaK · 26/10/2015 08:28

"Never cause fear, refuse to feel fear." Uni lecturer. Deeply flawed man but I've found it useful advice.
"Things happen for a reason." My mum. Bloody infuriating advice the first time something bad happened but as i've grown older and had some wonderful amazing friends/experiences/dh and ds - that would never have been there otherwise i realise what she meant.

NickiFury · 26/10/2015 08:39

There are thousands of people out there who will criticise or speak badly of you, don't be one of them. I say this to my kids a lot.

southernskies · 26/10/2015 09:16

There is no success or failure for a person.

Living well is the best revenge.

Be kind. Because everyone you know is fighting a hard battle.

RoosterCogburn · 26/10/2015 13:44

I've remembered one I read on here and it really resonated with me

The only time you should look into your neighbour's bowl is to check that he has enough

Stormtreader · 26/10/2015 13:49

From my mum "Until the ring is on your finger, you've committed to nothing". I think she was a bit wild in her youth Grin

Branleuse · 26/10/2015 15:29

There aint no such thing as a free lunch

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is

OurBlanche · 26/10/2015 15:40

Ah yes TANSTAAFL. Heinlein's rule to live by!

That and 'never underestimate the power of human stupidity'

Muskey · 26/10/2015 15:48

It's not where you live but how you live

Buy good shoes and a good bed as you'll spend most of your life in one or other of them

Comparison is the theft of joy

Muskey · 26/10/2015 15:50

Also those who mind don't matter, those who matter dont mind

MrsJorahMormont · 26/10/2015 15:53

'Sometimes you have to be a bit brave' and 'sometimes it's better to be kind than right.'

uberalice · 26/10/2015 15:55

What other people think about you is none of your business.

Excitedtoday · 26/10/2015 16:00

Your hands and neck will age a long time before your face.

Earn a wage to match your age.

Dance like no-one's watching.

You're a long time dead.

Excitedtoday · 26/10/2015 16:01

Never assume malice when stupidity is an option

Excitedtoday · 26/10/2015 16:03

Piper Are you me?! I made a very deliberate effort to do this a couple of years ago and definitely great for remembering people's names and having just generally better conversations Grin

bleedingheart · 26/10/2015 16:05

From my mum:

Actions speak louder than words

Often the hardest thing and the right thing to do are one and the same.

From my dad:

There are two certainties in life; 1) one day you will die, 2) if you have a flat roof it WILL leak.

dodobookends · 26/10/2015 17:11

Neither a borrower or a lender be.

Assume every other road-user is a moron and you won't go far wrong.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

IjonTichy · 26/10/2015 17:20

"You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for counting
When the dealin's done"

Words to live by. Thanks, Kenny Grin

pandarific · 26/10/2015 17:53

'In five years, will it matter?'

SharkBastard · 26/10/2015 18:00

"Don't fuck it up" RuPaul

"What others think of you is none of your business" RuPaul again ha

Better an untidy house than an unloved life

There but for the Grace of God

It'll feel better in the morning

tethersend · 26/10/2015 18:13

From an ex-colleague:

Whoever wants to wear the crown, let 'em be king.

zeezeek · 26/10/2015 19:05

From an old friend of mine: only two rules are needed: men and women are equal and don't be a dick.

areyoubeingserviced · 26/10/2015 19:19

Sorry to lower the tone .
My aunt- 'Their shit don't taste sweeter than your shit' was her response to anyone who was feeling inferior to someone else.

LorelaiVictoriaGilmore · 26/10/2015 19:29

Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all

A man's reach should exceed his grasp, else what's a heaven for?

It's always darkest before the dawn

A good plan today is better than a better plan tomorrow
