Going off another post....what is the best advice that you have received from parents (or anyone else really) advice that you live by and that you will pass on to your children/ friends etc.

Mine are;

  1. Feel the fear and do it anyway.
  2. Aim to have a wage that matches your age.
And
  1. Always apologise for your part to play in arguments etc. Be the bigger person.

Can't say I always apologise but I do try.....hehe

Always remember that 'this too will pass' applies to the good times as well as the bad - so enjoy and appreciate them.

sohelpmegoad · 25/10/2015 20:25

My Nan used to say "to thine own self be true" and as I have Aspergers, its a manta of mine as I don't always understand everyone else

Gwenhwyfar · 25/10/2015 20:36

"Only boring people get bored"

Rubbish

OddBoots · 25/10/2015 20:42

Don't throw Stanley knives.

MrsHathaway · 25/10/2015 20:43

"Never miss an opportunity" - a phrase passed down in our family from when an elderly relative hosted the equally elderly Duke of Edinburgh who sagely offered it as advice.

Admittedly they were talking about never missing the opportunity to go to the loo but it's a good motto for life even just at that crude level.

waitaminutenow · 25/10/2015 20:44

These are great!! Lots that I love!!

You'll regret the things you don't do, not the things you do.
Remember you've got a tongue in your head.
Concentrate on the matter in hand.
Always leave the house with a handkerchief, a piece of string and money for a phone call (the latter now 'a phone' I guess).

AyeAmarok · 25/10/2015 20:51

Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.

PipeDownSmallFry · 25/10/2015 20:52

From my dad - hope for the best, expect the worst and take what comes.

From my dance teacher - nod and smile girls, nod and smile.

From an old boss I hated - never presume anything.

yeOldeTrout · 25/10/2015 20:54

You'll regret the things you don't do, not the things you do.

But that's not true. Confused. Or not for me.

All my huge regrets are definitely things I did do.
Not pretending that's sane. Just my reality.
I don't understand regretting things you didn't do at all.

scatterthenuns · 25/10/2015 20:55

Always make time to have a bath, rather than a quick shower.

AyeAmarok · 25/10/2015 20:58

A year from now, you'll be glad you started today.

ChristinaParsons · 25/10/2015 20:59

From my Grandad. Hear all, see all, say nowt!
From my midwife when I left hospital with my DD. Enjoy her.
From my dog. If you can't eat it or have fun with it. Piss on it and walk away.
Always buy a good bed and good shoes because if you're not in one you're usually in the other

AyeAmarok · 25/10/2015 21:00

Stop whinging and get the fuck on with it.

Grin

I should take my own advice!

Twowrongsdontmakearight · 25/10/2015 21:07

Always have foot comfort.

No one lies on their deathbed wishing they'd bought more stuff.

reallybadidea · 25/10/2015 21:16

Because I can be hot-headed: Don't do something permanently stupid because you're temporarily upset.

Because my mum was always obsessed with what everyone else had/looked like/did/achieved: Comparison is the thief of joy.

Because the world would be a better place if everyone did this: Treat other people as you would like to be treated.

catfordbetty · 25/10/2015 21:16

Whenever you can, bury the hatchet. But remember where ... you may need to dig it up again.

Kayakinggirl86 · 25/10/2015 21:25

Mine is one my nana said often.
"What's for you will not go by you. If it goes by you don't holdcit in your heart as it was not meant to be"

And my baptism quote:
"For I know the plans I have for you declares the lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, give you hope and a future"

MrsLupo · 25/10/2015 21:28

Take what you want and pay for it.

specialsubject · 25/10/2015 21:34

LOADS of good stuff.

to add to 'no pockets in a shroud' there's 'no roofrack on a hearse'

two others I've been given:

'you've nothing to prove'
and
'have a job you enjoy and you never work again'

toastednutella · 25/10/2015 21:41

Do not regret growing older. It is a privilege denied to many.

Orrla · 25/10/2015 21:44

After a break up where I'd been treated really badly and totally fucked over and he came out of it smelling of roses I got this amazing advice:

The best revenge is your own happiness

And its so true -I look back to that miserable existence with a twat and know that he will never have the love, laughter and happiness in his live that I have now.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 25/10/2015 21:47

Be kind.
Do the right thing.

That pretty much covers everything for me. Both from my FiL.

bertsdinner · 25/10/2015 21:49

Grandad always used to say to me, "don't think about what other people are doing, look at what you are doing".
And "better to be 30 seconds late in this life that 30 years early in the next", when they thought I was driving too fast.

LumelaMme · 25/10/2015 22:17

From my DM:
Get yourself an education.

From a landlady:
If you find a good man, hang onto him (I did. It's worked so far).
Use hand cream (I can't be bothered...)

From an autobiography, a father to his son:
Why learn from your own experiences, if you can save yourself the trouble by learning from other peoples'?

From a friend, by example:
Make the most of what you've got.
