to think there should be an alternative hot drink to tea and coffee

i don't like tea and recently gave up drinking coffee thinking that it wasn't doing me any good healthwise.

Problem is what do i drink now? Tried hot water with non sugar sweetner which was nice enough but woke up with a muzzy head. I'd like just to be able to drink water but its so dull. Don't like any of the coffee substitutes - ideally would like a squash type liquid to put with hot water but don't want to fill my body with crap and rot my teeth.

Milo is perfect! Not to sweet.

BikeRunSki · 21/10/2015 07:40

Ribena are doing a winter version which you add hot water to.

Have I been doing something wrong all these years adding hot water to the normal stuff? Hmm I love Ribena, used to work on the farm that was one of their main blackcurrant growers, but Winter Ribena seems a marketing step too far.

Fugghetaboutit · 21/10/2015 07:43

I sometimes have hot water with a clove, honey and slice of lemon.

lighteningirl · 21/10/2015 07:44

Sliced root ginger
Sage leaves from garden (bitter but I like it)
Mint from garden
Lemon slices
Hot milk
Green tea or white tea when I'm out
Hot Rivera when I want something sweet

BlueJug · 21/10/2015 07:46

Marigold stock - not too strong with a squeeze of lime juice and a dash of tabasco, (or not). It is like a soup but much lighter.

Hot milk with hot water - or water with milk

Hot water , lemon juice, honey

Sirzy · 21/10/2015 07:47

The winter Ribena is a spiced one so rather like mulled wine (without the alcohol obviously)

Annnabellla · 21/10/2015 07:48

I like the idea of squash in hot water but Robinsons sugar free orange gave me a muzzy head and think it can't be great for my teeth either.

Really don't want to return to coffee or coffee alternatives.

As I don't like normal tea, I've never really taken to any of the fruit teas - just taste like exceptionally diluted squash without the sugar kick but would love to find one i liked. Will check out the salted caramel one thats been mentioned.

Keep trying green tea it took me quite a while I like Clipper green tea best I find Twinings has a chemical twang to it. I also leave the tea bag in and just keep topping it up the second and third cup taste better than the first. And green tea with Jasmine is nice.

FetaComplete · 21/10/2015 07:57

Fruit teas need ages to brew imo. I leave the bag in.

Hereward1332 · 21/10/2015 07:59

Bovril. Although I think you may have to be at a football ground in the 1970s to enjoy it.

ilovesooty · 21/10/2015 08:03

gave me a muzzy head - in what way?

Axekick · 21/10/2015 08:03

Why did it give you a 'muzzy head'

I drink mint tea and hot squash when I cutting down on caffine.

wonkylegs · 21/10/2015 08:04

I love some of the Bottlegreen cordials with hot water. Lemongrass & Ginger, Plum & Apple and Spiced Berry are good hot.
If I'm only drinking 1-2 a day I'm not bothered by the sugar content.
Ovaltine
Lemon & honey
Warm milk
Chai
Herbal teas
There's loads out there it's just easier to think tea or coffee.

redshoeblueshoe · 21/10/2015 08:04

Hereward yy to that and hot vimto after swimming Grin

Toomuch2young · 21/10/2015 08:05

Squeeze half a lemon and a squirt on honey to a mug of hot water for a lovely and natural breakfast drink

bittapitta · 21/10/2015 08:07

Have you tried Red Bush tea?

Teapigs do lovely teas too, treat yourself to a selection box to try a few. There are many other teas aside from normal (black?) and fruit.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 21/10/2015 08:08

Fruit teas aren't usually great, I agree. Herbal is better.

Lemon and ginger is good, especially with some honey. Licorice tea is lovely and naturally sweet with no sugar. Rooibos tea has already been mentioned, I drink the vanilla one in the evening as a sugar and caffeine free hot drink.

BondJayneBond · 21/10/2015 08:10

My current favourite herbal tea is the Twinings Intensely Buttermint tea. Peppermint and vanilla flavour. The best mint themed tea I've ever had.

19lottie82 · 21/10/2015 08:13

ideally would like a squash type liquid to put with hot water but don't want to fill my body with crap and rot my teeth.

have you actually TRIED fruit herbal teas? i think they taste exactly like hot water with a splash of diluting juice (but then again I don't have a very refined palate!)

Lidl do a lovely range and you get 40 bags for under £1. The Peach and Raspberry one is v nice :)

lilyb84 · 21/10/2015 08:23

Yogi teas do a nice range of spicy herbal teas, many without caffeine. My absolute favourite is the Choco tea - it's delicious especially when made as a latte with hor milk.

There's also a chocolate orange tea which is tasty - can't remember the brand but they sell it (and Yogi) in Holland & Barratt.

I'd definitely recommend roibos / red bush as others have. I find it both comforting and refreshing.

I don't drink caffeine any more and miss jasmine tea like mad but there are good caffeine free versions of green tea out there too!

lilyb84 · 21/10/2015 08:24

*hot milk

NoseinaBook79 · 21/10/2015 08:26

Yy to hot Ribena!!

If you want something that's a bit like squash and hot water but without the sugar/sugar-free sweetner, then I recommend Suki Tea Apple loves mint. Yummy, sweet and refreshing.

Also, hot water with nothing added is surprisingly delicious and tastes quite different to cold water IMO. Depends where you are in the country, though, and how good your tap water is.

Fugghetaboutit · 21/10/2015 08:27

Belvoir does a lovely winter berry cordial which you serve with hot water

MrsMook · 21/10/2015 08:28

Sugar free squash is an excellent way to bring on a headache.

I drink full sugar, but very diluted. I have got the taste for fruit teas now. The trick is to tell yourself that it's going to taste like hot water, and then you can notice the difference.

I used to like Vimto until it was ruined by fecking sweetners.

NoseinaBook79 · 21/10/2015 08:31

BlueJug love the idea of marigold with lime and tabasco!!

redshoe yy to hot vimto after swimming! But sometimes DM would just dissolve a stock cube in hot water for us and that was even better.
