to think there should be an alternative hot drink to tea and coffee

Annnabellla · 21/10/2015 07:16

i don't like tea and recently gave up drinking coffee thinking that it wasn't doing me any good healthwise.

Problem is what do i drink now? Tried hot water with non sugar sweetner which was nice enough but woke up with a muzzy head. I'd like just to be able to drink water but its so dull. Don't like any of the coffee substitutes - ideally would like a squash type liquid to put with hot water but don't want to fill my body with crap and rot my teeth.

red tea its hydrating and nice you dont need to add milk like normal tea (and its decaff)

HopefulAnxiety · 21/10/2015 12:07

I find green tea far more bitter than black tea, especially given that most people have black tea with milk.

Also green tea has just as much caffeine as black tea. Maybe try decaf coffe?

HopefulAnxiety · 21/10/2015 12:09

Norbert Mormon beliefs on caffeine vary - some avoid caffeine, some avoid hot drinks specifically and may drink cola. They all seem to be into hot chocolate despite being both hot and containing caffeine Confused

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/10/2015 12:12

Green tea has caffeine? Shock Haha, well that's something I've learnt today!

I don't drink milk at all, or add sugar to drinks, so for me black tea is just the tea bag & water and does taste very bitter.

It's obviously all down to personal taste though. One man's pleasure is another man's poison and all that.

LookingUpAtTheStars · 21/10/2015 12:13

What is a muzzy head?

Horlicks?

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 21/10/2015 12:16

Yabu. Daft question because obviously there are a hundred different alternatives to tea and coffee, you just dont like any of them.

Your actual problem seems to be that you only want to drink sweet things but you are afraid of sugar and think you're allergic to sweeteners, which tbh makes you both picky and the architect of your own problem.

NorbertDentressangle · 21/10/2015 12:34

HopefulAnxiety - I guess they were pretty full on in their anti-caffeine stance as I was never offered hot chocolate as an alternative.

Thankfully I only spent a limited amount of time with them and boyfriend at the time wasn't Mormon like his family.

Pranmasghost · 21/10/2015 13:33

Apple tea is lovely and you can get one with cinnamon which is perfect on a cold day.

Janeymoo50 · 21/10/2015 14:56

Chicken Bouvril - great in the winter and really low fat too.

cdtaylornats · 21/10/2015 16:03

Admit it - you just want someone to say its ok to have wine instead.

And it is.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 21/10/2015 16:09

Marmite dissolved in hot water is lovely or maybe I'm strange

wasonthelist · 21/10/2015 16:11

Tried hot water with non sugar sweetner which was nice enough but woke up with a muzzy head.

I think you might be better not using crack as a non-sugar sweetner :-)

BrandNewAndImproved · 21/10/2015 16:12

Hot ribena

Black tea weak with a slice of lemon?

ouryve · 21/10/2015 16:12

Have you never set foot in a supermarket, then? I drink chamomile or fennel tea, most of the time. Other non tea or coffee infusions are also available, including unsweetened fruit ones.

There are also other drinks, such as redbush/rooibos.

YABU, basically.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 21/10/2015 16:15

tbh if OP thinks hot water with aspartame is a nice drink, she's got pretty weird ideas of nice tasting beverages anyway...

MyNewBearTotoro · 21/10/2015 16:18

I drink hot water with a slice of lemon/lime or hot water with fresh root ginger (a couple of cm thinly sliced).

Or orange/apple juice diluted with cold water is good for just giving a bit of flavour to water.

Some squash, such as ribena, is good hot too.

BertieBotts · 21/10/2015 16:22

I can't stand fruit teas but do like some herbals. Ginger tea, proper strong ginger is good if you like ginger. Peppermint tea is nice. Aniseed and Fennel is, again, nice if you like those flavours.

I quite like the Twining's chamomile and spiced apple.

You might be able to get hold of some non-alcohol mulled wine (in Germany it's called Kinderwein but I don't know if that carries through to the UK Lidl and Aldis.)

HopefulAnxiety · 21/10/2015 16:24

Santa of course green tea has caffeine in it! It's tea! It's just not fermented like black tea is - all tea including white tea naturally contains caffeine, since the tea plant does. Rooibos is not strictly tea and so does not.

Bit puzzled as to where you thought the caffeine in black tea comes from? Also pound for pound tea contains more caffeine than coffee.

AcrossthePond55 · 21/10/2015 16:32

Do you have Dr Pepper in the UK? Hot Dr Pepper with a squeeze of lemon is delish.

CleverPlansAndSecretTricks · 21/10/2015 16:35

Why give up coffee anyway? I thought caffeine was meant to be good for you these days?---- #thingsIlearntfrommyFacebooknewsfeed

Jux · 21/10/2015 17:51

I do like a teaspoon of Marmite melted in boiling water. Great when you're ill, too.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/10/2015 18:01

TBH Hopeful, I've never given any thought to where the caffeine in tea comes from! If I'd been pushed for an answer, I'd have probably said it was something added, as you can buy decaffeinated versions.

This is one of the reasons I love MN - always an education Blush.

Caboodle · 21/10/2015 18:07

Hot Vimto or Bovril (Northerner Grin )

SapphireSeptember · 21/10/2015 19:25

*When I started reading this I was racking my brains trying to remember the hot drink that the Mormon parents of an ex-boyfriend (over 25 years ago) used to drink as they didn't touch caffeine as part of their beliefs.

Thankfully someone mentioned it so I won't spend all day trying to recall what it was .... Barleycup.

it was horrible*

It sounds disgusting, no thank you. I hate things like Horlicks and Ovaltine, they taste way too salty to me (as do most instant hot chocolate powders.) Yuck.

Norbert Mormon beliefs on caffeine vary - some avoid caffeine, some avoid hot drinks specifically and may drink cola. They all seem to be into hot chocolate despite being both hot and containing caffeine Confused

Mormon here, I drink herbal teas, fruit teas, rooibos tea and hot chocolate, and also occasionally coke, (though not too much because I can feel the sugar eroding my teeth when I do.) The coke debate is endless, some Mormons don't go near it, some only drink the decaf versions and some go the whole hog. I love hot chocolate, I had a lovely pumpkin spice hot chocolate today, it was lush. Smile

DepecheNO · 21/10/2015 19:58

Picked up some of that salted caramel green tea. It smells amazing and tastes meh. Wonder if there's any similar scented air freshener or soap?
