To think this 'comedian' on Radio 4 shouldn't have said this at 11.30am?

In the car earlier with DD 3.5 and baby DS. Radio 4 is on, with a comedy-type show presented by Sue Perkins (who I love by the way), when some silly bint announces that all 5-year-old's should be told that Santa doesn't exist?!? All said very seriously, given it was supposed to be a 'comedy' show. DD didn't say anything but is the type of child who stores things up and mentions it later. Didn't want to say anything at the time as didn't want to draw attention to it.
AIBU to think she shouldn't have said it??

So you don't want to shield your children from the world, radio can still have adult programmes just aslong as it's nothing that could upset your little darlings??
Thankfully tv and radio does not revolve around your children.
Newsflash, not all children believe or were bought up to believe in santa!
If you don't want your kids to hear anything that could possibly upset them, don't listen to an adult show.

"I am surprised at the very real offence it's caused here, though, when many m'netters who throw around the word 'cunt' as if it were part of their regular vocab"

I've never heard another woman call a woman a "bint" before - only men when they are denigrating a woman.

I feel that MNers have reclaimed the word "cunt" in any empowering way. A bit like the gay community with "queer" and the black community can use the n-word amongst themselves without offence.

Imchangingmyname · 21/10/2015 17:40

It's only empowering on an anonymous forum though, mardy, where no-one knows who you are. I don't think for a minute those MN'ers using the word 'cunt' so frequently and throwaway as they do here, do so in real life. So what does that say? They're too ashamed to say it in real life? What's empowering about that?

No, I don't use it as frequently in RL, because I'm not in the MN community.

Anyway, you're veering away from the subject. I still call you on "bint" and YAstillBU unreasonable. Wink

I call myself and other women slut, tart, cow or bint as a term of endearment, generally prefaced by 'soppy' or silly. They would have to be friends.

I sometimes call male friends tarts or sluts if they have behaved in a sexually louche manner that doesn't hurt anyone. They could be straight but more usually they are gay.

I would call a woman who had offended me a cow or bitch. Usually prefaced by 'fucking'.

I'd call a woman or a man who'd gone further a cunt. Ditto with the preface.

I never say slag but find it acceptable if expressed towards male villains by Jack Regan or Ray Winstone and pronounced: 'Slaaag!!'

limitedperiodonly · 21/10/2015 18:57

I once had a man reel in shock when I described myself as a slut. He actually said: 'You can't call yourself that'.

What kind of fucking right-on mansplaining was that? Confused

As it happens, I wasn't talking about my sexual behaviour, but about my casual approach to housework. I regard the word 'slut' in the way as 'slattern'.

But if I was talking about sexual behaviour instead of dusting, that's up to me.

I regard the word slut in that context used in the way I intended the way I imagine some black people use the N word. Not everyone in the group likes it, but it's mine to own and no outsider is going to argue with me.

Like the Slut Walks, for instance, which though some women objected to, I thought was a fine retort to the victim-blaming of a senior male police officer when he should have been concentrating his efforts on assailants.

ArcheryAnnie · 21/10/2015 19:00

Do you use the term "silly bint" to refer to women in front of your kids?

Anyway, YABU. It's a station for grown-ups. And santa does not, in fact, exist.

limitedperiodonly · 21/10/2015 19:04

People often ask what Mansplaining is.

I think the man who solemnly lectured me on the use of slut to describe myself was a pretty good example of that.

Imchangingmyname · 21/10/2015 19:11

No, I wouldn't use that term in from of my DC, same as lots of MN'ers wouldn't call everyone who slightly offends them a 'cunt', like they do on here.

I used bint like I would use 'silly cow', to me it's a softer version of 'daft bitch' or some other.

There's my explanation. mardy I'd still like an explanation on how MN'ers have empowered the word 'cunt' when they only use it so readily on an anonymous forum? You compared it to 'queer' which is completely ridiculous as that word has been used openly and mainstream for decades? Confused

I wouldn't purposely use bint, slut, tart, cow or the stronger words cunt or bitch in front of children ArcheryAnnie.

I regard them as terms for grown ups, much like you and I regard R4.

And I agree, Father Christmas does not exist.

Imchangingmyname · 21/10/2015 19:17

And I agree, Father Christmas does not exist.

I am devastated.
