To think this 'comedian' on Radio 4 shouldn't have said this at 11.30am?

In the car earlier with DD 3.5 and baby DS. Radio 4 is on, with a comedy-type show presented by Sue Perkins (who I love by the way), when some silly bint announces that all 5-year-old's should be told that Santa doesn't exist?!? All said very seriously, given it was supposed to be a 'comedy' show. DD didn't say anything but is the type of child who stores things up and mentions it later. Didn't want to say anything at the time as didn't want to draw attention to it.
AIBU to think she shouldn't have said it??

My parents just brushed off people who let it slip with a "Shock Someone got coal in their stocking last year".

BitOutOfPractice · 19/10/2015 20:40

Sorry 665 but I think that's ridiculous.

Take your example of Sunday mornings

The schedule is:

  • Religious stuff
  • Broadcasting House (middle class magazine show)
  • The Archers
  • Desert island disks / the Reunion (This weeks DID was a very inspiring female scientist)
  • Half hour comedy: usually a very well established one, currently Just a Minute
  • The Food Programme

Can you tell me where in that schedule is the stuff that's unsuitable for teens or young kids? Or the peurile bits?

I think that's a really ill informed post!

Imchangingmyname · 19/10/2015 20:44

No I don't want bland and assanine, that's why I listen to lots of Radio 4. Funnily enough, the light swearing etc doesn't bother me as much, as I said I don't want my kids to be sheltered.

I just thought the Santa thing and, more in the delivery, as I said earlier was distasteful and almost 'for the sake of it'. Yes, by school DD could be told about it all but she is 3.5 and at that age Santa is truly magical. Not saying that I want them to believe forever.

You're right 665, I love Women's Hour and do listen at the moment if we're in the car but do turn it off if I think it's a bit much for little DC ears. However if it was on in the evening, once DC's were in bed, could see myself settling down with a large wine tea and enjoying it.

And to add, R4's post watershed horror at 9 o'clock tonight is a natural history documentary about the hornbill

Imchangingmyname · 19/10/2015 20:46

Tango yes, quite right, other reason to berate them Wink

My two are 3 and almost 7 and still both believe. Neither batted an eyelid because of how I reacted. Or rather how I didn't react.

Imchangingmyname · 19/10/2015 20:48

They should have had the Hornbill documentary on earlier and the Grinch lady on tonight. That would've worked.

I've listened to lots more Radio 4 since the advent of Iplayer, for me they are the perfect combination as I can listen to exactly what I want when I want with no interruption (I mainly listen at work). For just general background listening with the DCs around I find 5Live much better, it's more chatty so it doesn't matter if you miss a bit but still lots of news, sport and current affairs. Also none of the dreadful "comedies".

As for Father Christmas, if you're going to "do" him you need a few slck answers tucked away, same for the tooth fairy as there will certainly be mire than one occasion where this sort of thing happens.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 19/10/2015 20:52

slick I mean.

Ricardian · 19/10/2015 20:53

so...lets not have that on as you potter on a Sunday morning with the family

I am positively agog with expectation as to what's unsuitable in the Sunday morning lineup.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/10/2015 20:57

Ricardian that's the answer I'm waiting for as well.

Booyaka · 19/10/2015 21:00

YANBU. I listen to radio 4 sometimes, during the day there is adult content and my 3.5 year old doesn't know what they are saying when they talk about ISIS or vaginas or penises in pigs. But if you said 'Santa doesn't exist' he would know exactly what that meant.

It was thoughtless.

Booyaka · 19/10/2015 21:03

And yes Santa is magical at that age. My child is exactly the same age and this year is the first year he has really understood the fuss about Christmas and who Santa is supposed to be. If she has realised it would be very sad she'll never have a Christmas really believing in Santa. I'd be upset too.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/10/2015 21:06

So do you think R4 should only have content suitable to your particular 3YO's belief system until the point in the evening when you give them a call to say she's asleep?

BitOutOfPractice · 19/10/2015 21:06

He sorry!

Custardo · 19/10/2015 21:13

oh what a dilemma

keep your three year olds out of my R4 - no doubt some MC R4 type will be reading this and taking every word on board. Small children spoil everything

Imchangingmyname · 19/10/2015 21:45

Booyaka agreed. This is the first year DD has really understood and it was said so clearly I thought she would definitely hear it and understand.

Bitoutofpractice yes, yes I do expect them to adhere to my family rules. Do you have the number? Hmm

BitOutOfPractice · 19/10/2015 22:20

I was actually answering boo but surely you can see how ridiculous you're being. If you want kiddy only stuff either play a cd, or tune into fun radio.

I hare people who say this but when your DC are older you'll cringe for yourself.

Still no response from 665 about what is do threatening in a Sunday morning on R4

SurferJet · 19/10/2015 22:25

You're unreasonable inflicting R4 on your kids, switch to R1 & give the poor little things a bit of a life.

IceBeing · 19/10/2015 23:26

hmm I think I am going to have to stop listening to radio 4 in front of DD...

Today she told me she would absolutely hate if we had to leave our home because of a war....and asked me if refugees came, would we say 'yes' and let them stay in our house?

I feel a little ashamed to be honest...nowt like a 4 year old to bring reality back home to your world bubble.

IceBeing · 19/10/2015 23:30

Also that vaginal cleaning bit was awesome! I just loved the counter point from the feminist perspective.

Except....right after hearing how bad it is for our insides to have chemicals and scent up them, I completely failed to find any thing in the whole aisle of tampons and towels in my supermarket that wasn't fecking scented.

Gack!

UncertainSmile · 19/10/2015 23:30

When I become R4 controller, Women's Hour will be the first to go.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/10/2015 23:41

You will not!

I love Woman's Hour. It's really varied and interesting and doesn't talk down to people.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 19/10/2015 23:42

Round Britain Quiz can go though.
