To have not let her have the meningitis vaccine?

jadorecakesnbiscuits · 19/10/2015 07:53

My daughter is 15 weeks and she goes for her second lot of vaccinations today, with her first lot I was happy for her to have them all apart from the new meningitis because it had only been around for about 4 weeks when she had her first lot and I didn't like how I had to give her calpol as it would cause a spike in her temp, also I just don't trust it.

Now I'm starting to wonder if I was a dick for not letting her have it? I'm not anti vax at all I just don't like this one and what it would do to my baby, has anyone else refused this vaccine? The nurse tried to argue with me and I'm anxious she's going to pressure me again today!

Oh Sugar Flowers

Fugghetaboutit · 19/10/2015 10:54

sugar you're very brave to post as it must bring it all back to you, and if it convinces one person to get it then it's worth it, so well done

leedy · 19/10/2015 10:58

Also FWIW, medicines such as Calpol are not considered to compromize the "virgin gut", unless you're actually feeding your child litres of the stuff. Child who is entirely breastfed and has medicines is still entirely breastfed according to the WHO. If you're concerned about the colouring etc. as a PP said you can get other less vividly pink paracetamol solutions (though I personally wasn't arsed).

Waltermittythesequel · 19/10/2015 10:59

OP, one of my dc had a temperature spike after every vaccination.

The others; nothing at all.

And really, it's a temperature. Not the end of the world.

It's utter madness not to get it so I'm glad you've changed your mind.

Sugar I'm so, so sorry for your loss.

sugar21 · 19/10/2015 10:59

ExactlyFugg
I just dont want another MNetter to experience the same when it is preventable.

Bunbaker · 19/10/2015 11:00

Disprol is just another brand of paracetamol bumbleymummy

Fugghetaboutit · 19/10/2015 11:00

Yes, you can get colour and sugar free varieties of Calpol

Salene · 19/10/2015 11:00

bartender

I'm not sure where in Scotland you are I'm also Scotland

thebartenderandthethief · 19/10/2015 11:01

Thank you very much Salene

Salene · 19/10/2015 11:01

Sugar so sorry, it's such a horrid thing :-(

I lost a 21 year old friend to it.

Jeffreythegiraffe · 19/10/2015 11:01

I thought that they only tell you to give calpol specially with the menB vaccination.

Calpol and disprol are the same thing. It's all paracetamol.

Ricardian, I also wonder what this research is, I'm sure it is just google. Reading research and having the ability to disseminate results and good and bad studies (and the daily fail) are two different things.

Jeffreythegiraffe · 19/10/2015 11:02

I'm so so sorry Sugar. Heartbreaking. Flowers

specialsubject · 19/10/2015 11:08

I had a spectacular convulsion or two after my measles jab, decades ago. I'm fine, although it does seem to have destroyed my facility to be tolerant for ignorance and the idea that 'I read it on the internet' is research. Or 'putting chemicals in a baby' which is of an equally high order.

your ickle preshus will die one day. Your job is to postpone that as long as possible and give her the highest chance of a good quality of life.

google harmonie-rose allen, whose parents have since campaigned for meningitis vaccination.

you don't have to give the kid a smallpox vaccination. Do you know why?

Salene · 19/10/2015 11:10

When I git my son vaccinated privately at 6 months old there was no mention of giving him paracetamol or such like, the doctor never said a thing.

So we never and he had no ill effects from the vaccine at all, you wouldn't of know he had it.

sugar21 · 19/10/2015 11:15

Ok look Dr Google will not save your child, if I had not spent ages asking Dr fucking Google what was wrong with dd maybe she would be at reception class this morning instead

RedZeppelin · 19/10/2015 11:15

YABVVU

My daughter was on the vaccine study about 7 years ago. Prior to testing it in the UK it was in regular use in many other countries so it most definitely isn't new. A temperature spike is a normal side effect of any vaccine - DD needed calpol for some of her jabs, as did DS (who wasn't on the study and didn't get the meningitis vaccine).

Before dismissing it out of hand I suggest you have a look online and get yourself a bit better informed.

Before berating the OP I suggest you read the whole thread and get yourself a bit better informed.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 19/10/2015 11:20

sugar I'm so sorry. I can't express how sorry I am for you. Wish I could reach through my screen and hug you, your pain is so tangible. Your posts have convinced me to look into privately having my just turned 5 dd vaccinated for meningitis. Again, so very sorry and I wish I could heal you Sad

sugar21 · 19/10/2015 11:26

Notasinglefuckwasgiven Thanks for reading my posts your words have convinced me that I have got through to someone.

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 19/10/2015 11:36

sugar my dd missed out being too old once it was introduced but your posts have shaken me and I am going to the doc today anyway so I will be asking him/her how to do this. Thank you for your courage in speaking here. I wish so much I could make it all better for you. I'll be thinking of you today. Flowers

Defenderwife · 19/10/2015 11:38

Sugar that is just awful, I'm so sorry.

Please keep posting on threads like these. People think it won't happen to them but it can. The vaccination and side effects are safer than the very real risk of death and serious outcomes from having meningitis. Any parent would be a moron to not have it done and if their child ever caught it, how they could live with themselves afterwards is beyond me. This is coming from a woman who has a cousin who lost 3 limbs to it. The cousins sibling died from it. It spreads fast and is brutal. Protect your children.

TaliZorah · 19/10/2015 11:41

Salene everything I've read suggests it's only been around for two years not ten. Is this incorrect?

jadorecakesnbiscuits · 19/10/2015 11:41

Ok after a telling off from the lovely informative nurse I managed to get them both done albeit a little later than I should have, the nurse was understanding unlike the previous one, she couldn't advise me on getting my toddler vaccinated but it's something I'll be looking into this afternoon at private clinics.

As for anyone berating me, I was on here trying to get advice as I had no idea what to do regarding my daughters health after dealing with a shitty lazy nurse last time and hearing tonnes of conflicting advice, I also know on any given day the opinions on mumsnet can change, the anti vax crowd might all be logged in tommorow morning and the thread could be very different, whatever.

Also, I'd rather be on here looking for help and getting a few petty replies than being the sort of parent that spends the morning on Mumsnet being sanctimonious and nasty.

Thanks for the help everyone and I feel so relived and more confident that I've made an I formed decision for my daughters health and wellbeing

Can't we have a discussion about vaccines without people referring to each other as "morons"?

jadorecakesnbiscuits · 19/10/2015 11:45

And sugar thankyou so much for having the strength to share your story on this thread, I am so sorry for your loss xxx
