To have not let her have the meningitis vaccine?

My daughter is 15 weeks and she goes for her second lot of vaccinations today, with her first lot I was happy for her to have them all apart from the new meningitis because it had only been around for about 4 weeks when she had her first lot and I didn't like how I had to give her calpol as it would cause a spike in her temp, also I just don't trust it.

Now I'm starting to wonder if I was a dick for not letting her have it? I'm not anti vax at all I just don't like this one and what it would do to my baby, has anyone else refused this vaccine? The nurse tried to argue with me and I'm anxious she's going to pressure me again today!

*my DD had fc at 13mo and 3years

I really didn't know that vaccine had been available for a few years and reading this thread has me feeling very very guilty. I wish I had known I wish I had taken dd2 to the hospital sooner. I wish I hadn't got stuck in traffic.

blacktreaclecat · 22/10/2015 18:36

YABU- I paid privately for DS to have this as he's an older cohort.
Meningitis kills and maims small children, you would never forgive yourself

giddywithglee · 22/10/2015 18:55

sugar the vaccine was only licensed in the UK from Jan 2013 and has only been available at a very high price from few suppliers. It's not necessarily 100% effective.

My niece's parent took her to the local urgent care unit, who diagnosed a urine infection and sent her home. An inquest found the symptoms are the same - it's just a big pile of shitty luck.

At the end of the day meningitis is a cunt. You are not at fault. Please don't see blame yourself.

giddywithglee · 22/10/2015 18:58

Can't type as this whole thing makes me very emotional, don't know where that random 'see' came from. Message still the same, though sugar, please please please try to accept that meningitis is a hard to diagnose, fast acting fucker. You are not at fault.

bumbleymummy · 22/10/2015 19:08

No sugar, please don't blame yourself. Thanks

Lilipot15 · 22/10/2015 19:08

Sugar, the availability of the vaccine privately had not been well publicised. I have friends who work in healthcare who had not known about it until it was in the news last year when it was publicised that it was recommended but not funded by NHS until recently.

Do not feel guilty. Thinking of you. Flowers

Fugghetaboutit · 22/10/2015 19:09

I only heard about it as it was in the papers last month. Hadn't a clue before. Flowers sugar

giddywithglee · 22/10/2015 19:11

Yes lili is right - the nurses were asking me about the fax at my baby's jabs last year!

giddywithglee · 22/10/2015 19:12

Vax! Am about to fall out with my iPad!

sugar21 · 22/10/2015 19:18

Thank you, Ive still got her teddy he's called Sammy and she could say his name, her pink teddy is with her he was bob. I'm feeling shitty today as its her birthday tomorrow.blacktreaclecat Im well aware what meningitis does. It killed my baby

giddywithglee · 22/10/2015 19:25

sugar I suspect blacktreaclecat has commented without reading all of the thread lovely. lots of hugs from me for you, tomorrow will be a tough day, I'll be thinking of you xxxxx

sugar21 · 22/10/2015 19:32

Oh Im sorry

giddywithglee · 22/10/2015 19:44

Don't b sorry xxxxxx

blacktreaclecat · 22/10/2015 20:09

I'm sorry sugar. I replied to the op which asked whether she should have her baby vaccinated now. The vaccine has only been available for a short time and we can't change the past, but we can make sure babies born since July get the vaccine and that was what I meant. Please don't ever blame yourself and I'm sorry for your loss.

nutmegandginger · 22/10/2015 20:28

sugar you shouldn't blame yourself. I had no idea the vaccine existed until this spring when there was suddenly a lot of publicity about whether the nhs was going to fund it. Lots of my other mum friends were in the same position and suddenly found themselves thinking about MenB when they hadn't before. Even the doctors' surgeries didn't seem that clear on it till very recently. Otherwise I tended to just assume that if there was a vaccine against a really dangerous illness it would be given routinely and I certainly didn't do any research on what might be available privately. What happened to your daughter is just awful, every mother's nightmare, but it isn't your fault.
