To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch

My niece has a little boy, 6 with a "normal name" popular and nice.
She's due in about 7 weeks I think with a baby girl. She lives about an hour away so don't see her loads, we've just chatted on the phone and she's mentioned her choice of name. I really wish I'd have said oh that's cute or something and as we were on the phone could probably have got away with it.

But I think I went quiet and said "oh right....Mmmmm I'm not mad" argh I feel like a cow, it's nothing to do with me.

My sister(her mother) has just text me saying I believe you don't like daughters choice of name, she's offended.

How can I put this right, we aren't particularly close but I really don't want to make anyone feel bad, especially when pregnant.

It's just a silly name, sorry but it is.

Let's hope they've got it wrong and she has a boy Grin
Seriously, can't you speak to your sister again and stress this poor child will have the shit ripped out of her for ever more?

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 16/10/2015 13:49

Holy Fuck. Your niece is hoping to give birth to a My Little Pony.

Stand your ground OP. You don't have to be nice about batshit names. I tend to blurt out things like "Wow, that's unusual!" when I hear names like that. Thankfully the parents were normally aiming for unusual and take it as a compliment

noeffingidea · 16/10/2015 13:49

Just found another Kandy Raine. She's a poet from Tennessee. Though I think Raine might be her surname.
No wonder there is an association with strippers. The girl group Kandy rain from x-factor were in fact previously strippers. They were evicted first, and booed off stage.

OfaFrenchmind2 · 16/10/2015 13:52

YANBU, and were quite polite about it too!!

Before knowing about the group I already thought it was a stripper or porn actress name.

Eminado · 16/10/2015 13:53

Yes, I mentioned the girl band thing to my sister, who texted back "yeah I think that's where she got it from" NO HOPE.

I am so sorry but that made me laugh.

AyeAmarok · 16/10/2015 13:54

I think Kandy-Reign would be better. It's more regal.

JeffsanArsehole · 16/10/2015 14:00

Don't bother apologising, it would be a lie

What you should do instead is send a link to this thread as clearly she's got mad baby brain hormones and needs an intervention

FriendofDorothy · 16/10/2015 14:00

Terrible name. YANBU. No way. It had to be said.

I think Kaandii-Rehyne. It's unique.

badtime · 16/10/2015 14:04

Wow. That is literally the worst name I have ever seen. The only way it could be worse if if she made the spelling even more yooneek - Kanndie-Reyne or something.

badtime · 16/10/2015 14:07

crosspost

Wasn't Princess Diana's stepmother called Raine?

I'm sure I read that Diana and her siblings used to whisper :-

"Raine, Raine go away
And don't come back another day"

But I could be wrong...

LovelyFriend · 16/10/2015 14:09

oh dear - good on you OP for speaking up. Will no one else think of the poor child?

Perhaps you could point out to niece that she is really hampering the child's life choices - I mean if this baby is ever to grow up to be a stripper, drag queen, porn star or manufactured girl group her number one option is already all used up.

If my Mum was daft enough to call me something stupid and horrible like Kandy-Raine I'd hold it against her forever or at least until I was old enough to deed poll myself a less "cheap perfume" moniker (after which I'd simply take the piss out of her forever).

YANAgurl1973 · 16/10/2015 14:10

Sounds like a porn star name :0

Salmotrutta · 16/10/2015 14:10

And actually wasn't Raine (Spencer) actually Barbara Cartlands niece or something?

hiddenhome2 · 16/10/2015 14:10

That's a stripper or a trailer park name Confused

Actually, a stripper who lives in a trailer park Grin

Classy

Nonnainglese · 16/10/2015 14:10

Utterly ridiculous, poor little baby Shock

Bet your sister isn't impressed either but feeling obliged to stick up for your niece.

MaidOfStars · 16/10/2015 14:10

I like Rain.

Kandy is dreadful, and not made better by the addition of Rain.

This name will have to go on their CV

This was my first thought. People will judge. They shouldn't, but they will.

There are lots of studies showing how peoples' names affect their life outcomes, perhaps because society treats them in a way that is deemed to "fit" their name. A child called Kandy-Rain is going to be patronised, princessed, not taken seriously.

I'm willing to bet that nobody called Kandy-Rain has ever successfully closed a £1b deal or successfully prosecuted a murderer.

ballerinabelle · 16/10/2015 14:12

Oh god! That is ATROCIOUS. You were merely doing your civic duty by telling her not to be a fuckwit in the nicest of terms

SoupDragon · 16/10/2015 14:12

I'm guessing your niece isn't on Mumsnet...

Salmotrutta · 16/10/2015 14:15

Let's hope your niece doesn't have a friend on MN who knows about her name choice OP?

wizzywig · 16/10/2015 14:17

Like Prince's Purple Rain? Niiice

Salmotrutta · 16/10/2015 14:17

OP did say her niece and sister are unlikely to be on here SoupDragon but they might have other relatives/friends who are and who know the name.
