To have told my niece I'm not mad on her choice of name feel a bitch

My niece has a little boy, 6 with a "normal name" popular and nice.
She's due in about 7 weeks I think with a baby girl. She lives about an hour away so don't see her loads, we've just chatted on the phone and she's mentioned her choice of name. I really wish I'd have said oh that's cute or something and as we were on the phone could probably have got away with it.

But I think I went quiet and said "oh right....Mmmmm I'm not mad" argh I feel like a cow, it's nothing to do with me.

My sister(her mother) has just text me saying I believe you don't like daughters choice of name, she's offended.

How can I put this right, we aren't particularly close but I really don't want to make anyone feel bad, especially when pregnant.

It's just a silly name, sorry but it is.

You've been here a long time talking to the 'internet randoms' regularly usual. Don't you like us? Smile

squoosh · 16/10/2015 17:24

Haven't heard that LL Cool J song in forever! Unfortunate lyric there for Kandy.

FluffyNinja · 16/10/2015 17:26

Tee hee. That's definitely a drag queen name.

I'm certain dniece is having you on. Grin

Katarzyna79 · 16/10/2015 17:27

sorry op I wasn't laughing out loud even though i said lol , I promise you but I'm very shocked, I can understand why you hate the name, it's hard to pretend otherwise. I think you and others should gather in unison to encourage the couple to reconsider the name. There must be other names she likes?

It's not the most awful name I've heard though.

Floggingmolly · 16/10/2015 17:28

She'll have real life people taking the piss out of it very soon, usual. Nobody's going to hear that name and let it go unremarked.

NinaSimoneful · 16/10/2015 17:30

I know it was hours ago but just to answer sooty real quick - I don't think there's anything wrong with any of the names I listed. (Except I guess Florine and maybe Leedasha) I know of a child called Vada and earlier this week a Daley was announced via FB. (Actually I'm not mad for Daley but mostly because it's my surname!)

reni2 · 16/10/2015 17:31

I was going to get a lovely Christmas tree decoration made for her new baby with the name on as a gift when she's born.

I would have to wear a spiderman mask ordering a bauble personalised for Kandy-Rain for fear of being recognised Grin.

initials, OP

go with initials

we gave DD a fancy dan name- in the Bible, nowt tacky, stop hoiking- and when I told xp, he said: well, that's a GREAT name- if she wants to be a STRIPPAH

it still makes me larff

but she normally gets called by her initials as name is bit of a gobful

XWIsBonkers · 16/10/2015 17:33

Perhaps you suggest she gets christened Candice Raine (classy) and her 'pet name' be Kandy Rain
Alternatively ask your DN to change her name to Kandy Rain by Deed Poll and when she's had a few weeks of people reacting to it, she might understand that it has its 'drawbacks' ....

SoupDragon · 16/10/2015 17:33

No wonder MN had a reputation for being full of up themselves MC women.

Don't be so harsh on yourself.

SoupDragon · 16/10/2015 17:34

Good point about her being bullied, she might meet someone from this thread...

I was bullied for having a stupid name long before the Internet was invented.

Jezebel?

MyFavouriteClintonisGeorge · 16/10/2015 17:35

If it is for real maybe she could use Candida Raine and just call the child Candy-Raine at home?

XWIsBonkers · 16/10/2015 17:37

Anyone know a worse boys name than Tonto ?

ElderlyKoreanLady · 16/10/2015 17:38

I assure you usual, I'm nowhere near middle class. And as PP has pointed out, randoms on the internet taking the piss is barely going to register on the radar of the poor little girl who'll be bullied for being given a name worthy of a porn star.

Mynameismummy · 16/10/2015 17:39

Nooooooooo.......

NinaSimoneful · 16/10/2015 17:40

Tonto? I hope he never ends up living in a Spanish speaking county. Then again if someone called Gordon goes by Gordo they're giving themselves an unflattering nickname too.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 16/10/2015 17:41

shhhhh squoosh

you'll out me

she's the only Jezebel born in her year but I'm confident there'll be a surge of Jezebels any time now

MrsJayy · 16/10/2015 17:41

I agree with pps i think they are winding you up maybe you have said something about names and they thought they would have you on

ElderlyKoreanLady · 16/10/2015 17:42

MyFavourite, Candida was ruled out for my DD (there's a family connection to the name on her father's side) because it sounds very similar to the name of the bacteria that causes thrush.

But it doesn't matter if anyone on here likes the name or not.

What matters is that it has been posted on the internet where any friend or relative of the mother might see this thread and tell them.

Then OP will be in a world of trouble because it's her sister and niece who she is telling us all about.

That's what doesn't sit right with me to be honest.

MuddhaOfSuburbia · 16/10/2015 17:45

No wonder MN has a reputation for being full of up themselves MC women

when I clicked on this thread that was the reaction I expected to have

but I lolled when I got to the name

Blush
ElderlyKoreanLady · 16/10/2015 17:45

That's quite a presumptuous leap usual. I have a feeling the reasons this thread offends you so much are just as illogical.
