I suspect it depends on your definition of 'skinny / slim'. DS, 14, has made it to a 25-26" waist, while being nearly 6 foot with a 33" inside leg measurement. He is reasonably well-muscled if lean, and good at sport, though not rugby. I would say that he is 'on the slim side of normal'. He goes fairly dramatically 'in' - in all dimensions, from front to back and side to side - under his rib cage, so I can see that someone could maybe have 4 or more inches around the waist and still perceived as 'not in any way stocky'.

Based on that body shape, it is very hard to get him clothes in the present day and age. You might see someone with the extra 4-5 inches round the wast as quite slim - 30" waist trousers are quite widely available in 32-34" inside leg sizes - and therefore perceive that most clothes are aimed at the 'quite slim', whereas I perceive them as being aimed at the 'much less slim than DS' IYSWIM?

As teacher says. Dd is tall and skinny exactly like I was/am. When I was a preteen and then teen, height made getting leg length difficult. But I don't remember much struggle to find small sizes. And I do remember wearing teen age size clothes in my teens when I was only slightly bigger and older than dd is now. Whereas now as an adult age 14 is too wide on me. Fair enough I'm hardly big, but I'm bigger built than I was in my teens when they used to fit.

Lucky you demented. I'm too grateful to even find clothes to fit dd to resent the fact they're over twice the price of standard. Never had school pants to fit since she was about 7 and they were ridiculously gathered in. School skirts I've had to have taken in for years. Bhs sells plus size uniform which is wrong on every level. Almost everywhere does larger sizes, but not many shops sell smaller ones. And when they do you are double fucked if from the 3 item range you need it in extra long. Name me a few high street shops that don't sell size 10/12/14/16. And then name how many sell size 4/6/ small size 8.

I just ordered a coat, usually I’m a 10-12 but I got a 14 so I could fit layers... well it arrived and it’s super cute and surprisingly looks great until I turn and you can see my shoulders not fitting and although it zips fine I could not comfortably bend or move let alone pick a child up. I thought no biggie I’ll go two sizes larger and it’ll let me fit layers (Scotland for Christmas brrr 🥶) I was so disappointed to see it only goes up to a 16! I’ll not be buying Superdry branded clothing again! I’m currently returning it!

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 04:24

Its only really for slimmer people. I disagree its a kids brand- I've seen a lot of adults wear the jackets.

Deadbudgie · 12/12/2018 05:24

I think it’s only for slim people, and slim people with certain shaped bodies, basically if you have any curves (boobs included) forget it! DH is a large most places, an XXl in there. Unfortunately as I have boobs,I don’t even bother looking. Reckon the XS will fit my (tall and slim) 6 year old ds looking at it!

PumpkinKitty82 · 12/12/2018 06:48

It’s not a children’s brand , parents just buy them for their kids because of the small sizing!
I think they’re based on Japanese sizing as they are a British brand inspired buy Japanese fashion which might explain the small sizing as they’re a much smaller build than the Brit’s ..
Of course , I could be making all that up but sure I read it somewhere...

Oysterbabe · 12/12/2018 06:52

Yeah they don't want fat people wearing the brand. I had some lovely dresses from there I used to wear pre children. I threw them all in a charity bag in a temper recently 😂

Amanduh · 12/12/2018 06:54

Not based on anything Japanese, except the name. They are a slim, ‘up and down’ fit brand.

Camomila · 12/12/2018 07:01

The North Face make good jackets, warm but fairly 'cool' looking - but probably a bit more expensive than superdry.

I understand the frustration about not being able to wear brands you like...I love monsoon but even their size 8 is too big round the chest and made for someone much taller than me.
I'm fairly flat chested and struggle with English brands to find stuff that doesn't gape at the chest/neck.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 12/12/2018 07:06

Superdry isn't Asian, it's American. Its branding is "fake Japanese" but it's not.

HighwayDragon1 · 12/12/2018 07:12

I'm a size 16 and my superdry coat is an XL and fits my nicely

brizzledrizzle · 12/12/2018 07:13

I see many adults wearing Superdry jackets so I wouldn't say it's a children's brand. It's almost a middle class father uniform at the school drop off in the mornings.

PumpkinKitty82 · 12/12/2018 10:13

It’s NOT American , it is British!
And I said “inspired by” not that it was Japanese ...

19lottie82 · 12/12/2018 10:16

I find there’s a huge discrepancy in sizing with a superset products. I have a ladies sweatshirt in an XL and it fits perfectly. I ordered another online and it was tiny!

Apple841 · 12/12/2018 10:23

I'm a size 10 and I'm sure my coat is a Large size, I was amazed when buying how small the sizes felt.

However, it was £44.99 which was a bargain given it's one of the warmest, comfiest coats I've ever owned! Superdry was really popular during the mid 2000's, and died a death with Hollister et al coming in. But it has seen a resurgence and the coats are amazing. I wish I could get one to fit my Mum who's a 16, and she would love one but they're just too small for her for some reason. Very weird sizing I agree but also very good price wise.

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 10:26

it is, of course, perfectly acceptable for the middle class to wear visibly branded clothes such as 'barbour' grin but superdry nah

My Barbour has no brand on it whatsoever!

Back to the topic at hand: Superdry is not for the over-30s. My 12-almost-13 year old has just 'discovered' it and thinks it's great.

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 10:27

The North Face make good jackets, warm but fairly 'cool' looking - but probably a bit more expensive than superdry.

The North Face couldn't be considered 'trendy', though, I was wearing it as a teenager.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/12/2018 10:31

It is very sexist, as they are generous on the men's. I have a Superdry ladies ski coat that I love, it is funky and cool, and not dowdy like Peter Storm/Tresspass etc. I am a 12/14 and my ski coat is large.

AlaskanOilBaron · 12/12/2018 11:00

It is very sexist, as they are generous on the men's.

Or, that their average male customer is fatter than their average female one.

19lottie82 · 12/12/2018 11:26

North Face couldn’t be considered
‘trendy’ though

North face is very trendy.

Junkmail · 12/12/2018 11:29

The sizes come up small. I’m usually a size 8 and need a 10 in Superdry and it’s close fitting. It’s not just you OP.

Aeroflotgirl · 12/12/2018 11:33

North Face is trendy, but more expensive than Superdry coats I think.

PumpkinKitty82 · 12/12/2018 11:36

North face is definitely more expensive .
Bought one that my 18 year old has asked for for Christmas so they must also be “trendy” as he’s very picky!

Aeroflotgirl · 12/12/2018 11:38

Just checked Superdry, they do a wider range of bigger sizes on the men, they are wider fittting, whereas ladies are more slim fit. Very sexist if you ask me.

19lottie82 · 12/12/2018 12:38

Very sexist if you ask me.

Slightly dramatic. It’s down to demographics, and demand / supply. There’s no point making certain products if they won’t sell enough of them to make a profit.
