AIBU about Delivery Driver and nails?

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 15:43

My shopping has just come, yay home delivery!
Anyway, the guy held the baskets and I took the shopping out and piled it in the middle room ready to put it away. As I was doing so I noticed the man notice my finger nails, I like to keep my nails tidy, shaped and often coloured. He seems to look at them a bit much and as I sign the gun thing he says,
"Nice nails mate" in a sort of semi snigger type thing.

AIBU to think that if I was a woman he wouldn't have mentioned them so why did he? Or am I just being sensitive and that if I do something typically feminine then people will react.

(I hasten to add that this isn't the first time someone has mentioned them, I usually just say thanks, its a pain doing my right hand etc)

I had a delivery driver compliment me on my toenails once. I forgot to be offended.

werewolfinladderedtights · 14/10/2015 15:50

You are being sensitive, you should expect people to notice I think.
Isn't that why you colour them? My friends son does his nails sometimes. I always notice and say if I think the colour is one I like.

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 16:02

That's what I think Werewolf, but it wasn't so much what he said, more the tone of it? Does that make sense?

Not that I care, if he's never seen a man with glittery purple nails before then he's been very sheltered. Lol.

OP posts:
FattyNinjaOwl · 14/10/2015 16:10

I want glittery purple nails!

LittleRedSparke · 14/10/2015 16:10

well its obviously because "men aren't supposed to wear nail varnish" however there is no reason why they cant, so keep wearing and enjoying

no - he wouldn't have mentioned it if you were female, but you know that really don't you?

Tootsiepops · 14/10/2015 16:19

He was being an arsehole. Shrug it off and carry on having great nails.

BumWad · 14/10/2015 16:20

I wanna see a pic of your nails shame me

EvansOvalPiesYumYum · 14/10/2015 16:23

I hope you said "Aww, thanks Mate. I'll jot down the colour for you if you want to try it"

Pootles2010 · 14/10/2015 16:25

No, you're not being unreasonable to expect him to be polite to customers. Might be worth an email to the delivery company? They should expect their staff to keep their bigotted opinions to themselves.

OnlyLovers · 14/10/2015 16:33

I agree with both Evans and Pootles. Be humorous to the driver, humourless and 'disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' to head office.

runlulurun · 14/10/2015 16:39

"as I sign the gun thing"

I read this as he was staring too long at your nails so you mimicked a gun with your fingers in a pretending-to-shoot-him kind of way.

That would have been a tad Unreasonable.

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 16:47

Not a great pic but hey ho.

Lol @ runlu, I wasn't making gun sign, maybe I should have?
"Yeah, my nails are awesome, thanks" throw gun signs and wink.

I don't normally do nail varnish but that would go with most of my wardrobe. Make? Cost? Spill pretty please!

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 17:10

four
Its just a poundland one called Purple Sheen. For a £ they're pretty good tbh.

OP posts:
fourquenelles · 14/10/2015 17:12

Thank you. A trip to poundland is in order.

DaimYou · 14/10/2015 17:21

I think people often comment on nails, especially if they're a particularly striking colour.

I guess it's all in the tone, but I do think it's just as likely to be said to a woman.

saucony · 14/10/2015 17:23

They are nice nails btw.

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 17:32

I ain't going to worry too much, bit condescending and I'd worry if he ran into a woman doing something 'male' or an older person he might talk down to. I'm big enough and ugly enough to put it down too 'typical bloke'
(Which is condescending in itself its a viscous circle lol)

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 17:32

Thanks BTW saucony Blush

Why do you wear purple glittery nail polish when people noticing pisses you off?

FattyNinjaOwl · 14/10/2015 17:53

Ooh, what's it like for wear? Does it chip easily? That is very nice, although I wouldn't say glittery. More metallic.

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 17:53

Floggingmolly (awesome band BTW)

(I hasten to add that this isn't the first time someone has mentioned them, I usually just say thanks, its a pain doing my right hand etc)

It's the condescending tone that bothered me slightly.
Imagine you were doing something typically seen as 'manly' and someone said something in a condescending manner, its more or less what I was questioning.

OP posts:
ILiveAtTheBeach · 14/10/2015 17:56

He mentioned it cos you're a dude with nail polish on. It's very unusual. And that is all.

Seeyounearertime · 14/10/2015 17:56

Fattyninjaowl - I use a this layer first as a base coat then recover with a second thicker layer and then possibly a third if I'm not happy with the coverage. They last pretty well considering indonall the cooking, cleaning, washing up, digging in sand pits, cheese grating (lethal to nails) etc. I reckon if I was more careful, used a proper top coat etc they'd probably easily last a couple weeks with the odd touch up.

FattyNinjaOwl · 14/10/2015 17:57

Thanks Grin
