To be annoyed that the empty shop is now an accountants and not a coffee shop?

I realise I am being unreasonable to be so annoyed that the empty shop on the way to school didn't turn into a coffee shop, it turned into a chartered accountants but I mean really, plenty of people need coffee on the way back from a school run - how many people actually need a chartered accountant?

I expect the majority of parents actually haven't got time to go to a coffee shop after the school run.

Christ. If they closed down half the coffee shops in the UK, they'd still have far too many.

I don't get the obsession with the stuff.

All I walk past on my way to and from school is a row of houses, a canal & lots of trees. Sometimes a squirrel or two.

MissFitt it's not the actual drinking coffee issue - of course I can make my own - it's the whole "coffee shop thing" that I like. And yes, a lot lot lot of people do have time to go to a coffee shop after the school run. Some like me, work from home and have a fairly flexible approach to timing and a lot have young children still at home and are not working yet.

I did look into opening one there actually but to be honest, it was a lot of outlay and I have no experience (and a good job already) BUT I really would have supported one had it been there.

But never mind.

Santa uh yeah, it's "that London" if that is now a euphemism for a fairly grotty town in the West Country.

Not exactly on topic, but I always feel bad for the high-street accountants, lawyers, even estate agents who have to try get on with work when people are walking by / looking in on them. It must feel like working in a zoo Confused

Perhaps would be coffee shop owners approached these very same accountants and were advised not to bother, seeing as 8/10 fold within the first two years.

Well speaking as an accountant, given my current workload people do seem to need us more than another coffee shop...

If you're in the West Country, I'm now quite surprised it didn't become a coffee shop Grin.

Admittedly, the only towns I know well in that region are not grotty & quite touristy.

A coffee shop would not have lasted long in our village. We live a 10 minute walk from DD's old primary school, and so did most families. If I had wanted to drink coffee with other mums I would just have invited them back to my house.

How dare someone open up a business and employ people. It shouldn't be allowed (unless it is a coffee shop).

I live in a fairly grotty town in the west country and we're over run with coffee shops. They've taken over from charity shops

At least coffee shops pay full business rates and the NMW and pay for their stock - unlike charity shops. Imagine running a second hand bookshop and seeing Oxfam open a competitor shop paying half rates, staffed by volunteers, and stocked with gifts.

I've never seen an accountancy practice with any staff on minimum wage.

I think charity shops and coffee shops are killing off the high Street, closely followed by "upmarket" barbershops (where I live anyway)...

Yeah why not eh?! I mean it's so easy isn't it? In fact, today I needed to buy my dd some new shoes so instead of driving to the shops...I just opened my own shoe shop. ...simple! I will need to get some food this weekend so I'm also going to be opening my own supermarket. Why doesn't everyone just do that?!

YABU I am a chartered accountant but don't tell anyone as I have been "retired" a while and pretty rusty. Nice to hear there is still a demand for my profession.

Loads of pubs round our way have turned into coffee shops. That is a definite improvement.
