To think getting paid monthly when you are 13 is a bit rubbish?

DS2 has a weekly paper round, he gets paid weekly on a Thursday. As from next week it will be paid monthly. I guess they are cost cutting etc.

His face was a picture when I told him, but I do think it's not great when you are that age to have to wait 4 weeks like the grown ups do.

Not ideal, but it will be a good lesson in budgeting!

traviata · 06/10/2015 17:27

I disagree I think age 13 is a good time to start to understand budgeting/planning/saving.

under 12, I would agree with you.

IssyStark · 06/10/2015 17:28

From the age of 13 my mum gave me my pocket money monthly as that's how she got paid. It was a very good lesson in budgeting.

KittensandKids · 06/10/2015 17:30

I give DS1 (15) his pocket money monthly, he detests it but I'm trying to show him how to budget, we were fortnightly for a while but at 13 I can imagine it seeming like forever.

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 17:32

Yes, obviously it will be an educational opportunity. Wink

He has quite a bit in the bank at the moment so it won't affect him too much until he feels like a splurge I guess. Then he will have to think about it.

I agree with you, that's crap.
Dd has a Saturday job, she started in August just before she turned 14 and gets paid at the end of each shift, then I give her the money from me.

TheGirlFromIpanema · 06/10/2015 17:34

Its probably because the burden of (often outsourced) payroll reporting is so much more now. Employers have to report pay in real time, tis a ballache for many sme's.

sproketmx · 06/10/2015 18:27

I think getting paid monthly at any age is a bit ridiculous but I'm weekly paid, so is hubby and most people I know. Tfif!!! Ow wait.. it's not Sad

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 18:29

I think monthly pay is fine for adults.

If it makes him feel any better our DC have always got their pocket money from the grandparents monthly, and last week I told them the pocket money from us is going to be monthly too from now on, they'll get it when their dad gets paid. I'm sick of scratting around for change and it'll be easier to give them notes.

They're 11 and 9 and they're fine with it. As long as they're not getting less than before they aren't bothered about the frequency they receive it. Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 06/10/2015 18:38

Sparkling
I know people will tell me I'm a pushover, but if I were you I'd pay him weekly, and then get his monthly pay from him.
Of course somewhere down the line they need to work out monthly budgeting, but it doesn't need to be right now.
Surely we should be proud of our teens working, and helping them along.

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 18:39

He gets weekly pocket money straight into his bank account. DH suggested we do it monthly too 'streamline' our banking too. Grin

sproketmx · 06/10/2015 18:45

Getting paid weekly means your only ever skint at most for 6 days. We get our pay in pay packets from the office on a Friday in cash too so I don't have to drive fooking miles for a bank machine to take money out. How's a kid who's paid monthly into a bank supposed to get their wages without you having to take them? Without their wages they've no money for the bus.

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 18:49

DS2 walks into town from school and uses the cashpoint. Confused

OP posts:
CalebWomble · 06/10/2015 18:56

Not everyone lives miles from a cashpoint!

I've given my kids pocket money monthly since they were 7 - too much hassle to find cash each week, it just goes straight from my bank account to theirs at the start of each month. They're now all teenagers and manage fine.

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 18:59

He makes a lot of purchases online too. FIFA 16. Angry

Brillo that has actually crossed my mind. If it came to it I would probably do that if he was v skint.

Dd2 has a job and gets paid a month in hand, she started at the end of June and her boss gave her a sub in the middle of august and now it's just starting now to work out. DD is nearly 17 and it has been a learning curve but the best bit was her face when she got her wage s in the bank.

It's not like they have bills to pay or need the money.

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 19:10

DS1 (16) gets paid monthly. He was really chuffed with his first payslip, it was nice to see. Except his tax code was wrong and he hd paid tax. Sad
He has phone bills and Netflix to pay for

jorahmormont · 06/10/2015 19:23

I think it is a lot at that age. I worked from 12 onwards and got paid every two weeks, but I was working 36/40 hours a week during the summer so I was getting a good lot to last me for the two weeks. Monthly seems like a big gap.

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 19:32

Yes, he was just used to it every Thursday, pocket money on Friday then spending on Saturday.

OP posts:
HSMMaCM · 06/10/2015 19:33

DD didn't get paid her first month and is just waiting for a payslip with 2 months pay. She'll be ecstatic when she sees how much she gets paid all at once.

sproketmx · 06/10/2015 21:02

Our cashpoints inside the scotmid so you can't get to it after 10pm, if it's even working which is like never and it's a 26 mile round trip into town for us. I know not everyone lives fae from one but what if op's kid does? I still think it's a bit shit. Aren't paper rounds normally cash in hand anyway?

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 21:06

That sounds rubbish sproketmx, you must live in remote parts.

As I said upthread DS2 walks into town from school and uses the cashpoint, and he gets his paper round money paid directly into the account as is usual in my experience.

I got my pocket money monthly from senior school. So age 12. It was fine.

Sparklingbrook · 06/10/2015 21:08

I am sure DS2 will be fine too Joe. Just a bit annoyed.
