I chose a 99p delivery time. It then said it was 99p as long as I spent over £75. And 1.99 if I spent over £40.

Then it said they are charging 5p per carrier bag. I don't have a problem with this except

1 - they put in about 3 items per carrier, so they end up using about 12 carriers when I would use 3.

2 - the delivery man asked on the way out the door if I had any bags for him to recycle. so they charge 5p but want them back for free.

I know I am being unreasonable expecting bargain basement products from ocado. But AIBU about the bags and the initially misleading delivery charges?

If you give them bags back to recycle they take 5p off the bags charge for each one.

They don't "want them back for free"

They refund, based on the number of bags you return. And they take bags other than their own.

Ocado will actually give you 5p back for every plastic bag you return to them. And not just theirs, for any bags.

Even others, on Sunday I gave them back about 5 ocado backs and 10 sainsbury bags and got 5p for each one.

Fwiw I don't think you are in reasonable about the delivery charge, I see a lot of small print re delivery charges from all the supermarkets, they are a tad cheeky so you have to check carefully.

OP, in your defence, Ocado seems to be pretty bag-happy 'round my way - in the last few weeks I've had an individually bagged tube of toothpaste, and an individually bagged pack of carrots. They also seem to bag 5l bottles of water (DP's, not mine!).

Maybe the new 5p rule will change things.

I gave back far more than I received this morning so I could be making money .

I do hate their packing though - it's so amazingly inefficient.

I think the amount of shopping bags used is unavoidable with Ocado because it's automated.

And why they can't offer bag less deliveries.

Well yes, that line about your shopping arriving in tip top condition is what they'd like you to think, sparkletastic - your stuff arriving in crates alone is really no different.

Sainsburys were charging a flat rate of 40p for bags here (Scotland) regardless of whether your shop came in 3 bags or 15. They recently brought in a bagless free option much to DH's consternation (because carrying individual items 3 meters down the hall is a faff ).

I've just got my first ocado delivery this morning, didn't realise I could give the delivery man my bags!

On an off note, does anybody read the reviews on the food? I was getting put off loads of the food, even basic things like potatoes?!
In the end I had to tell myself to man up, but I did find myself cringing at a lot of them, especially on most of the meats?

Tesco delivers without bags if requested AND the order arrives unlike the time I tried Ocado

Sometimes they can be helpful, in the usual way - if most of the recent reviewers have pointed out that the product is too hard/too bland/too whatever, it probably will be. I'll read them for new products I want to buy and usually buy anyway

I'm switching to Ocado after Sainsbury's massively let me down after twenty zillion years of customer loyalty. It feels bizarrely scary to switch, which must be one of those peculiarly modern states of angst. Are they notably more expensive than other supermarkets? unless you cash in your bags

Do you give the bags back in the same delivery or do you keep them and give them back the next time?

Do you count them and say 'here you go Jesus, that's 37 bags or does he count them later in his cabbage van?

As you now know, Ocado will charge 5p but give you 5p back for each bag you return, as said above, including other brands of bags. So that is good.

But a couple of things annoy me about Ocado's bag policy - for a start they are not obliged to charge for bags, because online shopping deliveries are not included in this. So in my opinion they should not charge.

And if they are trying to be environmentally friendly, fine, but they could go some way towards this by just using less bags - its silly how many bags they use. Like someone said perhaps this will change.

It seems weird them giving bags, charging for them, refunding, plus buying other bags. But I guess that is their choice and if I don't like it I can choose not to use them!

You can give them back to that driver, or the next driver, or bombard one lucky fella with a month's worth of bags. I've never counted them.

Absinthe - I found Ocado cheaper than Sainsbury's, but that's partly because traipsing around Sainsbo's meant I added random crap to the trolley each week. I feed two of us for between £60 - £75 on Ocado.

My delivery is always free when shopping with Ocado, how does that work then?
