to think you don't go on holiday whilst having a high risk pregnancy and without adequate insurance

Woman gives birth after food poisoning whilst on holiday in the Dominic Republic.

She had a cervical cerclage so knew she had a high risk pregnancy.

Her insurance didn't cover her entire pregnancy.

They are now stranded with a premature baby in a foreign country with no financial help and are relying on donations and GoFundMe.

I have made a donation but inside I feel almost angry. Why on earth have they let themselves be in this situation? That poor poor child.

I couldn't agree more Want2bSupermum

ThisIsntFunnyDean · 09/10/2015 18:06

So the insurance company would cover the private hospital if they'd stayed there?
Sorry, just trying to get the facts right.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 09/10/2015 18:20

I think the insurance company will cover the medical treatment doctors deem necessary, rather than what the parents deem necessary.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 09/10/2015 18:25

They expected the insurance company to start paying instantly as soon as they got the call. There was no delay, and they never said they weren't paying. The couple made up a load of guff about time differences and stuff, and are still making up stuff and making increasingly outlandish complaints against the insurance company (who are paying for MORE than they are actually entitled to).

ThisIsntFunnyDean · 09/10/2015 18:33

That makes sense itsallgoing

ThisIsntFunnyDean · 09/10/2015 18:37

Just saw on Facebook that they have decided to stop the GFM page.

multivac · 09/10/2015 18:40

"Sharon and Daniel have put in a request to stop receiving donations for Evie's Go Fund me page, due to many of the comments made to them.
Whilst the funds will be redistributed to help others, they do not want people to feel they are being misled.
They do thank everyone who has taken the time to donate and although have not been able to read all comments, have been overwhelmed by the support, advice and touched by the stories others have shared, which has kept them very positive about Evie's progress."

Shame it wasn't prompt enough to satisfy the mumsnetpolice - but, y'know, premature baby; hospital; scared and confused etc.

The fundraiser in their home town is still going ahead, and should raise a couple of hundred quid, old skool.

LittleBairn · 09/10/2015 18:55

Libraries actually with a Cerclage stich your are highly susceptible to infections which I am sure was made plain to them by the NHS they don't give these stitches out freely. If they did my DD1 would be alive.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 09/10/2015 19:02

So sorry for your loss.

I was just referring to the fact that the insurers said that the infection was unrelated to the pregnancy, hence why it was insured. So I assumed that that was just appalling luck. If that type of infection was also more likely it makes it doubly baffling they decided to fly.

ConstanceMarkYaBitch · 09/10/2015 19:03

Nothing on the GoFundMe page though. And if they could update with all the gubbins about the insurance company, they could update with some accurate information or stop the page.

Floggingmolly · 09/10/2015 19:04

due to the many comments made to them. Not due till the fact that the insurance company are allowing their claim and they haven't actually incurred any expenses??

Only1scoop · 09/10/2015 19:06

Well yes flogging that kind of sums it up.

Palomb · 09/10/2015 19:08

I got an infection from my last stitch that could easily have killed me and meant I had to have tfmr.

They were idiots whatever way you look at it. I'm glad their daughter appears to be doing as well as could be expected. Glad the GFM page is coming down.

PrincessTooty · 09/10/2015 19:10

I think it's good that they are going to stop it. I think that there has only been one five pound donations since yesterday so it seems silly to keep it up and running when there doesn't seem to be any need for it.

I hope the parents can now put it out their minds and concentrate on looking after Evie and that they can put the money to good use for their and Evies benefit and by donating money to baby units.

I hope they keep giving updates as to how Evie is doing. I hope she is getting stronger.

LittleBairn · 09/10/2015 19:12

libaries sorry didn't mean to come across as touchy.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 09/10/2015 19:17

Not at all littlebairn. You know far more about this than I do. This must be awfully close to home for you, and therefore particularly hard to understand why on earth they were in the DR in the first place.

Palomb - I am so sorry for your loss also. Flowers

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/10/2015 19:18

Just saw on Facebook that they have decided to stop the GFM page

A great step forward, when it happens - and with the donations drying up it's probably a wise decision

It's to be hoped that Evie continues to make progress and that the hospitals make great use of the money that's apparently coming their way

multivac · 09/10/2015 20:07

They haven't updated fb. Someone has done it for them. Because they are in hospital with a sick baby and unreliable internet. Still, write your own story if you must. And you just can't resist sticking the boot in, can you, puzzled? Apparently.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/10/2015 20:27

And you just can't resist sticking the boot in, can you, puzzled? Apparently

If you say so, multivac; I'm sure you must be right Grin

Kirkenes · 28/01/2016 23:23

I thought posters might be interested in THIS ITN NEWS UPDATE Evie is now home in the Uk and weighing over 6lbs.

sashh · 29/01/2016 05:29

Thanks for the update - good news all round, baby Evie home and money for hospitals.

Ditsy4 · 29/01/2016 05:59

That is good news. Didn't read all 28 pages but to me another case of some adults putting their own needs before their child. I have met one or two people that say pregnancy / baby is not going to change their life! Selfish is what I call it.

Kirkenes · 29/01/2016 19:23

The parents must be so relieved to be back in the UK.

Kirkenes · 29/01/2016 19:25

Ditzy. I'm not sure that the parents were putting their own needs before the baby. There was no reason for them to think that she would give birth so prematurely.

HiddenMeaning · 08/06/2016 23:24

Just in case anyone is interested...

Evies Parents gave £30,000 to Ipswich hospitals sunrise appeal.

I don't know if they followed through with giving money to one of the hospitals in the Dominican Republic or not but it's heartening that they have made such a generous donation to their local hospital. It sounds like Evie is doing well. Smile
