AIBU?

to think you don't go on holiday whilst having a high risk pregnancy and without adequate insurance

Woman gives birth after food poisoning whilst on holiday in the Dominic Republic.

She had a cervical cerclage so knew she had a high risk pregnancy.

Her insurance didn't cover her entire pregnancy.

They are now stranded with a premature baby in a foreign country with no financial help and are relying on donations and GoFundMe.

I have made a donation but inside I feel almost angry. Why on earth have they let themselves be in this situation? That poor poor child.

I did read the article Shhhh Hmm

Ipswich hospital confirmed they donated £30k. There is no such statement from any hospitals in Dominica.

I also read the £180,000 of donations received bit too - and the 70k leftover available to donate

I've not seen an article where it says they donated £40,000 to Dominican Republic hospitals?

Try reading the article linked to.

They are donating money to DR hospitals and charities that support deaf children.

Sorry that should have been 'plus 20p per donation'

Report
HiddenMeaning · 09/06/2016 00:09

The GoFundMe website will have taken 5% of the donations plus the card/payment processing fee *plus 20p It must have added up to over £4 or £5 thousand pounds. If not more.

I'm not a fan of GoFundMe and JustGiving type site Confused.

I've been trying to google but I can't find more info. They have a Facebook page called Little Evies Journey. She has a few medical issues. She looks a wee little thing.

I feel sorry for them but honestly don't understand why people don't just get proper insurance or if they can't for whatever reason - don't travel !

In that article they said they had £70,000 worth of left over donations after they used what they needed

I've not seen an article where it says they donated £40,000 to Dominican Republic hospitals?

Is there one? Or have they just donated the 30 to Ipswich?

Just in case anyone is interested...

Evies Parents gave £30,000 to Ipswich hospitals sunrise appeal.

I don't know if they followed through with giving money to one of the hospitals in the Dominican Republic or not but it's heartening that they have made such a generous donation to their local hospital. It sounds like Evie is doing well. Smile

Ditzy. I'm not sure that the parents were putting their own needs before the baby. There was no reason for them to think that she would give birth so prematurely.

The parents must be so relieved to be back in the UK.

That is good news. Didn't read all 28 pages but to me another case of some adults putting their own needs before their child. I have met one or two people that say pregnancy / baby is not going to change their life! Selfish is what I call it.

Thanks for the update - good news all round, baby Evie home and money for hospitals.

And you just can't resist sticking the boot in, can you, puzzled? Apparently

If you say so, multivac; I'm sure you must be right Grin

They haven't updated fb. Someone has done it for them. Because they are in hospital with a sick baby and unreliable internet. Still, write your own story if you must. And you just can't resist sticking the boot in, can you, puzzled? Apparently.

Just saw on Facebook that they have decided to stop the GFM page

A great step forward, when it happens - and with the donations drying up it's probably a wise decision

It's to be hoped that Evie continues to make progress and that the hospitals make great use of the money that's apparently coming their way

Not at all littlebairn. You know far more about this than I do. This must be awfully close to home for you, and therefore particularly hard to understand why on earth they were in the DR in the first place.

Palomb - I am so sorry for your loss also. Flowers

I think it's good that they are going to stop it. I think that there has only been one five pound donations since yesterday so it seems silly to keep it up and running when there doesn't seem to be any need for it.

I hope the parents can now put it out their minds and concentrate on looking after Evie and that they can put the money to good use for their and Evies benefit and by donating money to baby units.

I hope they keep giving updates as to how Evie is doing. I hope she is getting stronger.

I got an infection from my last stitch that could easily have killed me and meant I had to have tfmr.

They were idiots whatever way you look at it. I'm glad their daughter appears to be doing as well as could be expected. Glad the GFM page is coming down.

Well yes flogging that kind of sums it up.

due to the many comments made to them. Not due till the fact that the insurance company are allowing their claim and they haven't actually incurred any expenses??

Nothing on the GoFundMe page though. And if they could update with all the gubbins about the insurance company, they could update with some accurate information or stop the page.

So sorry for your loss.

I was just referring to the fact that the insurers said that the infection was unrelated to the pregnancy, hence why it was insured. So I assumed that that was just appalling luck. If that type of infection was also more likely it makes it doubly baffling they decided to fly.

Report
LittleBairn · 09/10/2015 18:55

Libraries actually with a Cerclage stich your are highly susceptible to infections which I am sure was made plain to them by the NHS they don't give these stitches out freely. If they did my DD1 would be alive.
