to think that hummus is not a sandwich filling? (lighthearted)

I was at a work lunch yesterday (think trays of sandwiches, posh crisps) where I picked up a sandwich and bit into it without really looking closely. It turned out to be hummus, grated carrot and something sweet, raisins or grapes or something. I was a bit Hmm but no chance to spit it out as I was talking to someone important.

Is that really a sandwich filling or just a joke by the caterers?

It's never occurred to me that hummus is not a sandwich filling. Raisins, though? Confused

TiggyD · 03/10/2015 17:23

Ah! Light-hearted. I was going to get all political.

Would taste good with a bit of ham. It's a lot like pease pudding.

I am Shock at the notion of picking up and eating a sandwich without knowing what was in it (food issues here).

But hummus is wonderful. I don't eat sandwiches but I always have hummus on a toasted bagel, it's delicious comfort food.

Fruit has no place anywhere near it IMO.

Houmous and raisins both lovely but definitely not together or in a sandwich. Vom.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 03/10/2015 20:18

Hummus, cheese and a bit of salad is lovely in a sarnie.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 03/10/2015 20:19

I was in a restaurant today and there was a pizza with Gorgonzola, grapes and walnuts!

Thebirdsneedseeds · 03/10/2015 20:23

I read this title several times (in my defence, I'm very tired) and I was sure it said humans, not hummus Blush That's a different thread altogether.

CharleyDavidson · 03/10/2015 20:28

I dislike the taste of houmous so would have disliked that sandwich too.

I don't like it when there are misleading sandwich fillings. I had a lovely afternoon tea out with work once. They had what looked like lovely tuna sandwiches, but when you bit into them they were really strong tasting sardine sandwiches. Sardine! In a posh hotel. It was a nasty surprise that was.

How old are you OP, 80?

I'm 40-something. But my PIL who are 80 would have liked it, I'm sure. They are prone to putting a handful of raisins in anything though.

My favourite sandwich is warm baguette with good butter, mature brie, slices of freshly cooked beetroot (no vinegar) and a handful of watercress. It has to be freshly made though, or it doesn't work at all and ends up very purple!

I'm still a bit traumatised by the original sandwich. You couldn't really taste the hummus (which I like as a dip), it was just a squidgy texture. And too sweet.

Rogue 'L' there Hmm

Someone I worked for once made me a granary radish and dandelion sandwich, served in a cat's feeding dish. Yum

SixtyFootDoll · 03/10/2015 22:11

I love hummus and cheese sandwich.
Spread the hummu instead of butter, a slice of Red Leicester and a bit of salad leaves. Lush.

6o6o842 · 03/10/2015 23:16

Sounds yum! Cream cheese, carrot and sultana is very nice too.

ColdCottage · 04/10/2015 09:38

Brie and strawberry used to go down well on my sandwich round as a student, as did beetroot, tomato and mayonnaise (my own invention and mega yummy) but I agree in general keep raisins away from my sandwich or salad!

iMogster · 04/10/2015 09:46

I like Hummus, falafel and cucumber sandwich, especially pitta bread. But NO raisins. Well done for keeping a straight face!

EmmaWoodlouse · 04/10/2015 11:16

I love hummus and carrot sandwiches. M&S used to do them so it's definitely a socially acceptable combination. I also like hummus with finely chopped spring onion tops as a filling.

Having said that they should probably label the fillings - I've heard of someone being quite severely allergic to chickpeas.

Thebirdsneedseeds · 04/10/2015 14:01

Just for the record, I'd never eat a hummus sandwich. Just no. It's for dipping carrots or pita bread in.
