to think that hummus is not a sandwich filling? (lighthearted)

I was at a work lunch yesterday (think trays of sandwiches, posh crisps) where I picked up a sandwich and bit into it without really looking closely. It turned out to be hummus, grated carrot and something sweet, raisins or grapes or something. I was a bit Hmm but no chance to spit it out as I was talking to someone important.

Is that really a sandwich filling or just a joke by the caterers?

I know, Contessa. I do actually like lot of North African food - and it can be great for vegetarians - but apricots or other fruit in tagines or other dishes I really don't like. Though, come to think of it, I don't like a scattering of raisins or sultanas in anything - I don't like fruit scones, for instance, though I'm fine with fruit cake. I think it's the change in texture from smooth cake-y bite to sudden sweet, wrinkly different-textured thing.

Hummus in a sandwich ? No way! Only on something crisp like a cracker, Doritos or a crunchy veg,

Love raisins and sultanas. DH's fruity turkey curry is to die for.

jorahmormont · 02/10/2015 10:49

YANBU. Hummus is vile. DD will eat just about anything and even she eats around the hummus on breadsticks and carrot sticks.

noeffingidea · 02/10/2015 10:52

It's often a filling in my sandwiches, minus the raisins. But I can see why other people don't like them.Thankfully there's usually a choice so people can have what they like.

molyholy · 02/10/2015 10:54

Mmmm Houmous and red pepper on brown seeded bread

noeffingidea · 02/10/2015 11:00

Lol, I've just read Senpai's post. My son would agree with you. He will only eat plain ham or chicken and stuffing (no mayo). He hates salad, cheese, mayonaise, houmous, chutney, etc
My Mum used to hate mayonaise as well and it is annoying when every sandwich has it in.

blibblobblub · 02/10/2015 11:01

Hummus and peppers, nomnom.

Can't deal with hummus and carrot though. It reminds me too much of when I was vegan and the only suitable Boots meal deal sandwich was a carrot and hummus monstrosity that tasted like cardboard. Blurgh.

TheMagicToyshop · 02/10/2015 11:08

You think that's bad, my old work caterers did a sandwich filled with broken up onion bhaji.

With cheddar.

I'd eat that. Sounds great.

I'll eat almost anything but my daughter found my Achilles heel this week. She is 23 and a pretty good cook but has a great fondness for Middle Eastern(ish) combinations of meat and fruit.

She made us a dish the other night that combined beef mince, onions, walnuts, chickpeas, chopped cooking apple, balsamic vinegar, rosewater and cinnamon. I had to stop eating it. I like all those things separately but not together. Sad

Tagines with apricots, kofta with dates, various 'proper recipes' that are MEANT to have dried fruit: usually fine. Though like everything else, not to everyone's taste

Things that are made up and infested with raisins and sultanas - Not Fine!

BarbarianMum · 02/10/2015 12:33

IMO, which is an entirely personal one, hummus should only ever be eaten with things that crunch - so, no not as a sandwich filling. On the other hand, if you were going to put it in a sandwich, what you're describing doesn't sound too bad to me.

notsmartenough · 02/10/2015 12:40

My first encounter with hummus sandwiches was also at a work lunch - we had hummus and coleslaw. Delicious!

DontStopBelievin · 02/10/2015 12:44

Hummus is a perfectly acceptable sandwich filling. YABU. As well as weird.

PandasRock · 02/10/2015 12:46

Hummus is fine in a sandwich. Raisins are not fine.

No butter with the hummus though, just use hummus in place of butter, then add other things you may like - cheese and hummus is good. Carrot and hummus would be ok, I suppose, except grated carrot can be a bit wet, leading to a soggy sandwich

bruffin · 02/10/2015 12:59

When I was little back in the 60s (cypriot father) we had hummous as a dip but with lots of bread either the daktyla or pitta but no crudites.
I do like boots hummous and carrot sandwiches though, not sure if they still do them.

BreconBeBuggered · 02/10/2015 13:46

Raisins have their place, but it's not in a sandwich. Or indeed anywhere in my kitchen. I like houmous, and I'd be glad to see it rather than the inevitable cheddar/egg offerings that usually occupy the non-meat section of the sandwich selection.

In cases such as these, I think labelling should be compulsory. Nobody wants to be chucking up in the workplace.

AngieWhats · 02/10/2015 13:49

I regularly have houmous and salad sandwiches for lunch.

Raisins in a sarnie, though? No, no, no! Grin

MaxPepsi · 02/10/2015 13:58

I'd never think to put houmos in a sandwich ever....so clearly going to have give it a whirl.

As for fruit in a sandwich.

I give you......Brie and Grape. Oh yes, it's a taste sensation to quote Peter Kay!

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 02/10/2015 13:59

I love hummus its the food of gods

it should not be hidden by other flavours and in a sandwich is just wrong far too much interference with other flavours and textures

scooped up with some pita, oat cakes or ryvita is all that is needed

HackerFucker22 · 02/10/2015 14:03

I sometimes use houmous as opposed to butter. It works well with spicy / cajun chicken. I also have it on toast.

In a sandwich or wrap it needs at least falafel and possibly feta too.

luciferswench · 02/10/2015 14:04

Hummus confuses me, it tastes of nothing and then you dip breadsticks/pitta soldiers into it why? If you ask me to put it on a sandwich seems odd. Is it not just glue to help the raisins and carrot stay in the bread.

iamaboveandBeyond · 02/10/2015 14:04

Humwidge

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 02/10/2015 14:12

Hummus confuses me, it tastes of nothing

you clearly are a very confused person it has a lovely garlicky, nutty lemony flavour

I would get to the doctors and get your taste buds checked you really are missing out

Purplepixiedust · 02/10/2015 14:37

Hummus in a sandwich is fine. Not on it's own mind but with salad or cheese. I use it as a kind of dressing and instead of butter. On toast, it's fine with nothing else. Now raisins in sandwiches is just wrong ??

ouryve · 02/10/2015 14:42

It's likely to be the sandwich I'd pick up first.

But I'd bite into it tentatively because a lot of houmous in catered sarnies is vile and tastes like nothing more than soggy breadcrumbs.

DS2 has a houmous sarnie in his packed lunch most days. No carrots or stuff in, though. He doesn't do vegetables.
