to think that hummus is not a sandwich filling? (lighthearted)

I was at a work lunch yesterday (think trays of sandwiches, posh crisps) where I picked up a sandwich and bit into it without really looking closely. It turned out to be hummus, grated carrot and something sweet, raisins or grapes or something. I was a bit Hmm but no chance to spit it out as I was talking to someone important.

Is that really a sandwich filling or just a joke by the caterers?

Hummus, grated carrot and raisins/grapes is of course not a reasonable sandwich filling. You should probably resign on principle.

Owllady · 02/10/2015 09:51

I think it is fine in a pitta or wrap but not between two slices of buttered bread

ScrambledSmegs · 02/10/2015 09:52

Houmous fine. Grated carrot fine. Raisins? Burn the abomination.

randomsabreuse · 02/10/2015 09:54

I like alternatives to butter/mayo as I'm currently off eggs (no mayo) and not crazy on butter unless it's very thin. Used to LOVE lime pickle and cheddar cheese sandwiches, also mango chutney with ham. Had brie and blackcurrant recently as well.

Can't think of anything worse than plain sandwich!

auntyclot · 02/10/2015 09:54

It is a bona fide sandwich fiilling. DD has it in her packed lunch most days, as do I.

CakeNinja · 02/10/2015 09:55

Yanbu, that sounds revolting Envy
I hate houmous anyway, weird synthetic taste and texture. But adding raisins just takes it to a whole new level of wrong.

InternalMonologue · 02/10/2015 09:55

If the hummus is used instead of butter then I have no issue with it. One of my favourite sandwiches is hummus, peri peri chicken and salad.

YANBU about the raisins though.

Hoppinggreen · 02/10/2015 09:56

If I have houmus in a sarnie I use it more as a condiment like mayo, would use it in sliced bread though but in a wrap or pita it's ok.
Warm halloumi and houmus with grated carrot in a flat bread is lush.
raisins should never feature in any savoury food.

ThisWillSoOutMe · 02/10/2015 09:58

Oh, no butter Owllady! Now that would be wrong.

Hummus and Marmite on toast is good too (no butter).

Janeymoo50 · 02/10/2015 09:58

No way, it's a dip or at a push served with pitta so you can tear a bit of pitta and spread a hunk of hummus on it - and don't get me started on the grapes in it - horrendous. I'd have felt cheated.

McSnuff · 02/10/2015 09:59

Hummous, corned beef and roasted artichoke. Sandwich of the Gods.

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 02/10/2015 10:00

Ooh I like houmus in a sarnie. Not raisins though. Bluergh

Senpai · 02/10/2015 10:00

Because that is boring Senpai

Why does a sandwich have to be an adventure? Can't it just be something familiar and delicious? I buy a sandwich to eat something simple and familiar. I go to fun exotic eateries for fun exotic food.

I'm all for new things, but some stuff doesn't work. Raisins, hummus, and carrots combined into a sandwich is one of them.

I just don't like sandwich shop gimmicks. They just seem to throw random crap into things for the sake of it.

GenevaMaybe · 02/10/2015 10:06

Ok so just to defend fruit in a sangwidge.
Best combo I ever had in my life was pretzel type bread with salt flakes on it, ripe melty Brie, bit of rocket and some dried apricots.
Oh man it was GOOD

Blu · 02/10/2015 10:06

I agree that hummus is best when presented close to its origins - in a wrap with falafel or kebab, or to eat with warm pitta, etc.

Raisins are for fruit cakes, never for salads, curries or sandwiches. Gavel.

Blu · 02/10/2015 10:07

The sandwich shop next to my University used to do a fantastic cream cheese and date stottie.

That is not a green light to put raisins in a hummus sandwich!

FeelingSmurfy · 02/10/2015 10:07

The problem was the raisins, it sounded great until that!

LaContessaDiPlump · 02/10/2015 10:10

OP YABmoreU than anyone else in the world EVER.

Hummus is a beautiful sandwich filling, only exceeded by the delectability of roasted vegetables in tahini sauce.

Lose the raisins though.

givemushypeasachance · 02/10/2015 10:15

Our uni used to stock a special range of veggie sandwiches and I first came across hummus and grated carrot there, it was tasty. I could do without the raisins though, horrible memories of school curries with sultanas in - bleurgh.

Kaekae · 02/10/2015 10:26

A friend of mine at school used to have a hummus sandwich every day for her lunch! I've tried it and thought it was ok.

enjoyingscience · 02/10/2015 10:26

The raisins are a problem. They should never be found in savoury food. Hummus sandwiches are ok though. Grated carrot and cheese is a fav here.

hmmmum · 02/10/2015 10:30

Hummus is great.
Raisins are vile.

TendonQueen · 02/10/2015 10:34

Surely the lesson here is, look properly at the sandwich before you stuff it in? Grin I like the sound of it myself. But then I love ham and pineapple pizza which is another great dividing line of our times.

Branleuse · 02/10/2015 10:36

its a great sandwich filling, or toast topper, but definitely not with raisins.
it needs either mango chutney, or pickled beetroot with the carrot and cucumber

LaContessaDiPlump · 02/10/2015 10:39

Okay, many of you would HATE Iranian or North African food - they have a certain fondness for introducing fruit into savoury dishes. I think it often works, myself, but not in hummus.
