to think that hummus is not a sandwich filling? (lighthearted)

I was at a work lunch yesterday (think trays of sandwiches, posh crisps) where I picked up a sandwich and bit into it without really looking closely. It turned out to be hummus, grated carrot and something sweet, raisins or grapes or something. I was a bit Hmm but no chance to spit it out as I was talking to someone important.

Is that really a sandwich filling or just a joke by the caterers?

Surely the lesson here is, look properly at the sandwich before you stuff it in? grin I like the sound of it myself. But then I love ham and pineapple pizza which is another great dividing line of our times

Tendonqueen, you are so right! Big mistake on my part!

But IMO you have bad taste in pizza :)

I quite like hummus in a sandwich instead of mayo. I hate butter in a sandwich. Ds2 eats hummus with anything. Literally. He will eat it by the spoonful too. Raisins in a sandwich are just odd although a cafe around here does a nice chicken, lemony sandwich thing with grapes in it....

FurryDogMother · 02/10/2015 15:16

I feel slightly sick when I think about a hummus, carrot, and raisin sandwich. There is a place for fruit in sandwiches though - thinly sliced apple and Camembert is divine :)

beardsrock · 02/10/2015 15:17

Hummus is really enjoying it's five minutes on the international sandwich stage.

Just you wait, egg mayo will be back before we can say squished chick peas.... Grin

wonkylegs · 02/10/2015 15:26

I love houmous and cucumber sandwiches, also houmous and marinated carrots

I generally hate raisins in savoury food, although I know of many people who do like them.

LieInsAreExtinct · 03/10/2015 15:18

Hummus = spiced chickpea paste, falafel = another spiced chick pea paste... I wouldn't need both in a sandwich! I like the OP's sandwich Smile

yumyumpoppycat · 03/10/2015 15:28

hummus with salad or cucumber and or ham or grated cheese is bril in sandwiches takes seconds to slap it on, my dds love it, I always feel slightly embarrassed for giving them hummus sandwiches, because it so so easy.

Hummus and brie in a sandwich is nice and hummus can be quite a good tool for hiding things in kids sandwiches - little bits of salmon with red pepper hummus say.

Have to say hummus wraps seem more acceptable round these parts than hummus sandwiches but then an element of faff arises with wrapping them!

Aeroflotgirl · 03/10/2015 15:32

Yum sounds lovely. Sandwich fillings are anything you want in them.

BananaThePoet · 03/10/2015 15:32

Been to a few catered sandwich events lately and all hummus sandwiches are not equal. A badly made one is an abomination and a good one divine. Sounds like you got one of the abominations.

dotdotdotmustdash · 03/10/2015 15:33

The caterer used by old employer supplied cold chicken and boiled egg sandwiches. We called it 'The Cradle to Grave sandwich'.

NoahVale · 03/10/2015 15:35

i love it, my mine staple for a long time, humous sandwiches, with cherry toms and water cress on brown

NoahVale · 03/10/2015 15:36

my family love humous with a burger, i love humous and falafel wraps,

NoahVale · 03/10/2015 15:39

in fact I have been eating humous sandwiches for 10 years, 10 years, I remember because someone noted in my leaving card when I left my job in 2005!
So there you are,
I started the craze in fact

NoahVale · 03/10/2015 15:47

this has inspired me to go and make some humous,
i dont buy it any more, cost cutting exercise, but oh humous I miss you

Bumdance · 03/10/2015 16:08

I can cope with hummus and grated carrot but raisins is just wrong. In anything savoury. Bleurgh.

I could completely get on board with onion bhaji and cheddar sandwiches though, quite fancy one.

Avocado, sliced pickled onion and cheese is a wonderful sandwich filling Grin

TheRattleBag · 03/10/2015 16:10

Coronation chicken has raisins (or is it sultanas?) in it, and that makes a lovely sandwich filling.

I haven't tried hummus on bread, but if I did I think it would need crusty (eg baguette) not soggy (eg white sliced).

ooohsopink · 03/10/2015 16:15

Hummus/carrot combo is good but a big fat no to the raisins! My fave 'odd' sandwich fillings are - marmite, cucumber and mint leaves on white bread with butter, or - cucumber, peanut butter and sweet chilli sauce - either are lush!!

pearlgirl · 03/10/2015 16:16

I like cream cheese and raisins in a sandwich - reminds me of growing up - my mum made mad combinations and some worked - others most definitely did not ( hard boiled eggs in hot cheese sauce with hot pickled beetroot is one that is burned into my memory)

thegiddylimit · 03/10/2015 16:17

NoahVale I was eating houmous sandwiches as a student in Oxford in the mid 90s (on ciabatta bread no less, how 90s was that!) so I really don't think 2005 is anything to boast about.

I love a houmous sandwich, as does DS (3) who always demands houmous in pitta bread for lunch on my day at home with him. It's great for veggies and those with a dairy allergy. Also think guacamole is a lovely sandwich filling, especially with lots of tomato. Yum.

No soggy sandwiches here, they are made and eaten straight away. Yum!

WhoAteMyToast · 03/10/2015 16:21

How old are you OP, 80? Grin. Stick to the roast beef and tomato next time!

wannabetennisplayer · 03/10/2015 16:25

Sounds nice to me. I think it's quite common in sandwich platters these days (not sure whether it normally involves raisins but I like carrot and raisin together).

I sometimes make houmous sandwiches but mainly eat it on toast.

It's probably included in the sandwich buffets so that there's something for the vegans (and something more interesting than a cheese sandwich for the veggies).

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/10/2015 16:30

A good roast beef sandwich is a lovely thing. Needs a good sprinkling of salt on the beef and ideally a bit of mustard or horseradish too.

Slices from a roast chicken or turkey (breast) and sliced tomato is also a fabulous sandwich filling, and a post-Christmas staple of mine. Butter spread generously on decent crusty bread, well seasoned with salt and pepper, unbeatable.

Nice strong Cheddar and sliced tomato - wonderful. Needs a good grinding of pepper.

Someone upthread talks about egg mayo coming back - where from? It's never gone away as far as I'm concerned. Another classic, and for a very good reason.

UhtredOfBebbanburg · 03/10/2015 16:38

Humous has been a standard sandwich filling for at least 32 years. For vegans at any rate. It may be more mainstream now, I don't know. I do know that chains like pretty who take a nice humours sandwich then RUIN it by adding Mayo or cheese are, basically evil since they are taking what should be the standard vegan sandwich and rendering it non vegan. OP are you certain you didn't take someone else's lunch - when I go to functions there's always the 'vegan tray' with my stuff on it. And people often pinch it before I've managed to get to it, leaving me with nothing. :(

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/10/2015 16:56

On the odd occasion when I've been in charge of ordering a working lunch, I've always gone for lots and lots of veggie options and not so much meat/fish. Most people who eat meat/fish also eat cheese, egg, salad and so on so will see everything on offer as fair game. If I had any vegans to cater for, I would personally stand guard over the vegan offerings to make sure they got what I'd ordered for them.

Mehitabel6 · 03/10/2015 17:17

It sounds like one of my favourite sandwiches- certainly a filling that I would choose in a cafe.
