To dislike "Radical Feminism"

InternetPerson · 25/09/2015 21:15

I've got nothing against feminists that fight for womens rights and genuinely want the best the best for everyone and don't hate anyone, but "RadFems" tend to be full of bitterness and hatred. And I'm not just talking about kids, these are high profile, intelligent women with power and influence. Do you think it's unreasonable to dislike something where most people think men are inherantly evil and to be feared? Or do you think their hatred is fair and we should respect them for their good work in trying to make humans hate eath other even more?

Like, I said, I have nothing against Feminism, it's done a lot of great work down the years and still does, but "Rad Fem" and "Feminism" are too completly different things in my opinion. Is this a wrong conclusion?

well everyone else is having a bit of a silly time and you seem to want to perpetuate a silly disagreement with Buffy Autumn - seriously I think you need to get over the lable and have some celery

SenecaFalls · 25/09/2015 23:20

Autumn We are having a bit of fun, yes, but seriously we have so been-there-done-that with these arguments that it's hard to take it all completely seriously. Also it's Friday night.

howtorebuild · 25/09/2015 23:20

I was watching the BBC Assent of Women, fascinating, it's on iPlayer op.

I had no idea it was a feminist who drove the pill through private funds, she was funded in the process by a woman, she was seen as radical at the time.

OutsSelf · 25/09/2015 23:21

See,I've never had a conversation about equality in which I've announced my radicalism. I only ever say I'm radical in conversations like this.

The ongoing inequities between women and men are not a branding issue.

TheyGotTheMustardOut · 25/09/2015 23:33

Can you not see the irony in saying that radical feminism needs to rebrand itself? Why would a movement intent on smashing the patriarchy want to play into it?

Anyway, I can't get into the idea of radish feminism but I'll take some of that crunchy celery.

Autumnnights1 · 25/09/2015 23:34

Equality means

Same job equal pay
Both work, split chores
One works, other looks after children, equal pay, split chores when home

MinecraftWonder · 25/09/2015 23:35

I have no idea what the difference between a bog standard feminist and a 'radical' feminist is.

But I agree with the pp about the word - the term 'radical' is particularly offputting and makes me think of aggressive, bra-burning man haters. It just does.

MinecraftWonder · 25/09/2015 23:37

I do not understand this at all.

Since when has the term 'radical' been linked solely to patriarchy?

I can think of lots of words I associate with the word 'radical' but patriarchy isn't one of them Hmm

Autumnnights1 · 25/09/2015 23:38

It means, no longer using radical, which has become rather offensive in modern language.

SmugairleRoin · 25/09/2015 23:42

I don't like the radical element of the feminism movement either. I would call myself a feminist but I'm not really het up about the label - some of my friends call themselves egalitarians and I'm equally happy with that.

OutsSelf · 25/09/2015 23:44

I wonder where you got the idea that radfems where men-hating harpies. You've said yourself it wasn't from any actually knowledge about radical feminists. To whose benefit is it, that you assume that radfems are all man-hating?

OutsSelf · 25/09/2015 23:46

There were exames given by a PP using the word radical, but not in relation to feminism Autumn -did you for find those offensive?

YellowTulips · 25/09/2015 23:48

Yawn....

Another goady post.

I'd rather be busy burning my bra than engage further.

MinecraftWonder · 25/09/2015 23:51

Radical implies someone at the worst end of the spectrum, with the way the word is used now.

I wouldn't particularly want to spend any time with a radical Christian. Or a radical teacher. Or a radical anyone.

The main word I would automatically associate with the term 'radical' now is terrorist. Not an ideal association to be encouraged by feminists, surely?

OutsSelf · 25/09/2015 23:51

My bras are too spenny to burn.

MinecraftWonder · 25/09/2015 23:52

Is that to me YellowTulips? If so, please don't let me keep you Hmm

Autumnnights1 · 25/09/2015 23:54

I also dont see myself as wanting a "movement" either. A "radfem Movement"? Women have a voice, its a growing individual one. I no longer believe I have to be part of a "club". Thank you. That is very 1920's.. its done its over.. i like the future. My son has girl friends as much as he has boy friends.

LyndaNotLinda · 25/09/2015 23:55

I always feel radical is a word that is a bit more exciting sounding than I am so I feel a bit of a fake using it.

Like I'm misappropriating something to be down with the kids :(

SenecaFalls · 25/09/2015 23:59

Bras were not actually burned, by the way, (binned but not burned). This offense against underwear for some reason seems to be one of the worst insults people like to throw at feminists. It's odd really, this patriarchal veneration of foundation garments.

Autumnnights1 · 26/09/2015 00:04

Blimey, I need to put my tits in something Grin If I dont, then I cant function they get everywhere.

Fauchelevent · 26/09/2015 00:04

Personally one of the things that annoys me about liberal feminism is the whole "do you breathe? YOU'RE A FEMINIST, come ON gals as long as

LyndaNotLinda · 26/09/2015 00:05

Are some people on this thread seriously arguing that because some terrorists are called radicals as a lazy shorthand by the media, that the word radical itself has suddenly become dirty.

Really?

Bloody hell. That's really some hard of thinking thought processing there.

Autumnnights1 · 26/09/2015 00:05

I dont really care who invented them.

Fauchelevent · 26/09/2015 00:06

Posted too reckon early didn't I?

"As long as you CALL yourself feminist that's the job done"

So yeah frankly I don't give a shit that radical "sounds" scary. If people can't be bothered to find out what radical actually means nor what radical feminism actually is, that's on them, not me.

Fauchelevent · 26/09/2015 00:07

*feckin, not reckon. Not my night tonight!
