To dislike "Radical Feminism"

InternetPerson · 25/09/2015 21:15

I've got nothing against feminists that fight for womens rights and genuinely want the best the best for everyone and don't hate anyone, but "RadFems" tend to be full of bitterness and hatred. And I'm not just talking about kids, these are high profile, intelligent women with power and influence. Do you think it's unreasonable to dislike something where most people think men are inherantly evil and to be feared? Or do you think their hatred is fair and we should respect them for their good work in trying to make humans hate eath other even more?

Like, I said, I have nothing against Feminism, it's done a lot of great work down the years and still does, but "Rad Fem" and "Feminism" are too completly different things in my opinion. Is this a wrong conclusion?

Celery feminists aren't real feminists at all.

I think the OP has a point in that maybe radical feminism could do with a name change - sadly the patriarchy have done a sterling job of reinforcing the view that radical = extreme and no matter how much success rad fems achieve re DV/rape/gender pay campaigns, it always gets overshadowed and lost in the narrative that rad fems are nutters who want to burn all male children at birth.

I don't describe myself as anything political TBH but if you asked me if I supported rad fem ideals I'd say yes. Why would any sane woman not agree with women having equal rights to men? Can any woman disagree with the idea that society currently favours men over women because it devalues much of the work that women are conditioned to take responsibility for from birth, such as childcare and domestic management?

And BTW I have a DS, I am in a happy, stable LTR with a man, I have male friends and I work happily in a male-dominated career.

[feminist celery]

Oh come on MNHQ, this really needs an emoticon.

FarFromAnyRoad · 25/09/2015 22:51

I'm just going to put the kettle on. Tea anyone?

Love when people say "I don't have anything against feminism". Congratulations, you concede that women are equal human beings, well done for meeting the basic standard for being a decent human being.

Autumnnights1 · 25/09/2015 22:54

gosh I popped back.. no im not the OP and Poundingthestreets is spot on here.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/09/2015 22:55

I wear lipstick - and I like tea - I still think I am equal to men though - where do we all stand on Bananas?

Autumnnights1 · 25/09/2015 22:55

The posts on here do not do you or I any favours.

Burnet · 25/09/2015 22:58

I don't like celery either. Oh god, maybe I'm not a feminist at all.

BathtimeFunkster · 25/09/2015 22:58

We do not need a celery feminism emoticon all looking like a penis.

The lack of phallic emoticons on MN is no accident. #radishfeministconspiracy

FarFromAnyRoad · 25/09/2015 22:59

Bananas? Not for the uninitiated, I feel. Grin

Come back, OP, the unwashed, patchouli wearing, hairy feminists want to engage.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/09/2015 23:00

my guinea pigs LOVE radishes - they are hardcore feminists

I used to be but I got old - I am raising my three girls to accept nowt less than equality though

abbieanders · 25/09/2015 23:00

I think radical feminists are brilliant and am only sorry that it's impossible to find any in charge because they frighten the horses. Genuinely though, I really believe that it's not possible to achieve equality for women as society is currently organised. Tinkering around with quotas and pay scales won't change the fundamental problem that women have - the lack of value society places on women's labour, the inability to cope with the level to which women make society work despite the economic and personal costs, the lack of respect for women's personal, sexual and physical autonomy.

Well, if we started calling feminism, radical and otherwise, something else, it wouldn't take very long at all for that term to become demonized. It's because of what it is and what it threatens that so many deplore it, not because of what it is called.

BathtimeFunkster · 25/09/2015 23:06

They really need to rebrand themselves.

Nobody is interested in listen to anyone "hardcore".

The fact of being a guinea pig isn't the reason people won't listen to what they are squeaking, it's just the hardcore thing.

Burnet · 25/09/2015 23:09

Senecafalls - thank you for that test. I am mostly a liberal feminist apparently!

OutsSelf · 25/09/2015 23:10

Oy! I'm a radical feminist! Come outside and say that!

Im 53 and have always had a battle on my hands where equality is concerned, of course I have.

However, I dislike the way when challenging an overpowering prefix it is met with scorn and deliberate berating, isn't that the same thing women are trying to change? It detracts from a purpose and even makes "my" back bristle. It isn't about elitism its about recognition.
