To dislike "Radical Feminism"

InternetPerson · 25/09/2015 21:15

I've got nothing against feminists that fight for womens rights and genuinely want the best the best for everyone and don't hate anyone, but "RadFems" tend to be full of bitterness and hatred. And I'm not just talking about kids, these are high profile, intelligent women with power and influence. Do you think it's unreasonable to dislike something where most people think men are inherantly evil and to be feared? Or do you think their hatred is fair and we should respect them for their good work in trying to make humans hate eath other even more?

Like, I said, I have nothing against Feminism, it's done a lot of great work down the years and still does, but "Rad Fem" and "Feminism" are too completly different things in my opinion. Is this a wrong conclusion?

Hence anything radical is ridiculous.

Being a word nerd, I had a little google.

Radical sports cars
Radical gaming
Radical skincare
Radical fashion
Radical media
Radical bowling.

Given that companies like these put a shitload of funds into their marketing and branding, you'd think they wouldn't choose such a terrible word as 'radical' if it was all that terrible and ridiculous and put people off, wouldn't you?

FloraFox · 27/09/2015 19:21

Maybe autumn can find some areas to compromise with religion. Like maybe God can exist Sunday to Wednesday.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 27/09/2015 19:29

I think that would be a lovely compromise.

And maybe the Christian church could go back to what Jesus actually said and not concentrate so hard on what ubermisogynist gitbag Paul did....

but that's a conversation for another thread.

FloraFox · 27/09/2015 19:31

I'm generally not in favour of "you can't be a feminist and religious / capitalist / a meat eater / etc." Maybe that's me being too compromising.

SenecaFalls · 27/09/2015 19:45

Speaking of religion and also speaking of patriarchal conspiracies (as we were earlier), the Pope in his current visit to the States has several times made pointed comments about the contributions of women to the church. I did not know this before, but under Benedict there had been a concerted effort by the Vatican to silence feminist voices among American nuns. There was an official inquisition investigation that lasted several years. Francis backed off that when he became Pope and has sort of been obliquely apologizing as he makes his way across the northeastern US.

Twunk - it does you great credit to try to find a reading which gives tgat poster the benefit of the doubt, but her "slavery smiley oh do behave" remark was made as a direct response to someone citing ISIS' enslavement of Yazidi women as a specific example of institutionalised male violence in the world right now, nnot the 19th century.

Twunk · 27/09/2015 20:00

Yeah Lurcio I was probably being too nice. I'm clearly not nasty enough to be one of you belligerent radicals Grin

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 27/09/2015 20:05

I still don't even know if I am a radfem

LurcioAgain · 27/09/2015 20:16

I'm trying to remember who it was up thread who said she agreed with most radical feminist critiques of the problems women face in society but didn't necessarily sign up wholesale to their proposed courses of action - I think that's fairly close to where I am. I'm a pragmatist when it comes to solutions - anything that works is fine, with the important caveat that it has to be real change, not papering over the cracks.

DiscoGoGo · 27/09/2015 20:22

I don't know if there is a definitive radfem "list" is there? Most people with political leanings agree with certain ideas but not others - for eg when you support a political party you generally can get on board with most of what they say (if you're lucky!) but not everything. And people within the same movement can and do disagree about ideas and approaches and priorities and stuff.

I am sure there are popquiz type things to do maybe I'll have a look for one.

DiscoGoGo · 27/09/2015 20:25

There is a serious looking one which is reallllllyyyyyyyyyyyy long and the rest look a bit random Grin

DenPasNaGamitheisEgo · 27/09/2015 20:42

Why all this fuss about the word 'radical'?

Should feminists call themselves Fluffy Lovely Women Who just Happen to dislike the patriarchal system?

Of course 'radical' is the right word, what with it meaning "going to the root".

Disco there is a link to one up thread. It's a bit US slanted but not bad.

DenPasNaGamitheisEgo · 27/09/2015 20:51

EgoSum - I hadn't noticed that it did that in English. Well, I suppose that's what happens when you use other languages for your usernames. As you would know, obviously.

It's Greek, Ego.

DenPasNaGamitheisEgo · 27/09/2015 20:56

Fine by me. Didn't realise you had a monopoly on the word Ego.

Each individual word is signified with a capital letter, EgoSum. I think you are being overly sensitive.

I have never used the word 'it' to refer to a human being.

I don't recall that I have talked to you on here before, but I can assure you that if I have, I won't have called you 'it'.

There are other people out there besides yourself with knowledge of Latin and Greek, and who like to play with words.

DiscoGoGo · 27/09/2015 21:08

Just had a look OnTheScrapHeap and that was the long one I found Grin

I think I did it a while ago and you're right some of the questions were a bit odd for UK people - some of the stuff around god and race was a bit alien IIRC and I just didn't know what on earth to put!

I remember there was a thread where loads of us did that one maybe I can dig my results out
