To dislike "Radical Feminism"

InternetPerson · 25/09/2015 21:15

I've got nothing against feminists that fight for womens rights and genuinely want the best the best for everyone and don't hate anyone, but "RadFems" tend to be full of bitterness and hatred. And I'm not just talking about kids, these are high profile, intelligent women with power and influence. Do you think it's unreasonable to dislike something where most people think men are inherantly evil and to be feared? Or do you think their hatred is fair and we should respect them for their good work in trying to make humans hate eath other even more?

Like, I said, I have nothing against Feminism, it's done a lot of great work down the years and still does, but "Rad Fem" and "Feminism" are too completly different things in my opinion. Is this a wrong conclusion?

"I cannot see why a person under the religion umbrella of suppression of women would be able to even comment in an aggressive woman empowering way."

You... what?

SenecaFalls · 27/09/2015 18:50

I also hope it's not deleted. The OP's intention was to goad, I think, but there has been some really good discussion, and it should stand.

almondpudding · 27/09/2015 18:51

Plays well, it didn't sound patronising at all.

I think radical feminism is an important and valued part of our history, as well as what radical feminists do now continuing to be important.

nooka · 27/09/2015 18:51

I've always slightly wondered what tatting is. Something to do with potatoes perhaps?

PlaysWellWithOthers · 27/09/2015 18:53

In case you're serious nooka....

It's a form of lace making which uses a shuttle instead of bobbins, and is mostly used for making edging lace.

It's lovely, but a bugger if you fluff it, and I usually end up throwing the fucking stuff across the room Grin

almondpudding · 27/09/2015 18:54

I assumed getting multiple tattoos.

grimbletart · 27/09/2015 18:54

Autumn. If we need to use our anger it should be about religion. That's what needs to be smashed to smitherines.

Gosh, autumn, that sounds a bit, what's the word? Radical?

This has to be the most bizarre thread ever.

SenecaFalls · 27/09/2015 18:55

I have several pillowcases trimmed with tatted lace made by my great-grandmother. My suffragist great-grandmother. Smile

PlaysWellWithOthers · 27/09/2015 18:56

Suffragists were nothing if not practical.

DiscoGoGo · 27/09/2015 18:57

lol @ grimble excellent point

that is the most painful change of subject I've seen on here in a long time

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/09/2015 18:59

I won't change my NN. DH does find it amusing that I will take Sir Terry's name but not his. Bloody feminists!

Twunk · 27/09/2015 18:59

Just a guess, but I think Autumn thinks you're talking about 19th century slaves, not "modern" slavery. Perhaps she thinks it doesn't exist anymore?

DiscoGoGo · 27/09/2015 18:59

Tatting sounds interesting but I would also be the "throw it across the room" type

There is a feminist conversation around the losing and devaluing of "traditional women's" craft type things isn't there. Things like tatting.

What we need is for a man to take it up and get a slot on primetime TV to tell us all about it, that would raise the interest and "value" of it no end...

PlaysWellWithOthers · 27/09/2015 19:00

Like baking you mean? And dressmaking?

LyndaNotLinda · 27/09/2015 19:02

I really thought that I was too pissed to understand the argument that autumn was making last night. Glad to see it wasn't the wine - it's really is a bonkers argument.

I think it might be a bot. Evidenced by making posts of words that sort of make sense but in the wrong order.

Well, I'd rather it was a bot. Being human is too scary

DiscoGoGo · 27/09/2015 19:03

I should mention that it's not my conversation Grin I don't know much about it, I've heard other people talk about it though and I thought they had a point.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/09/2015 19:03

Liberal feminist bot? With lifelike holes in all the right places! Not a dig at Autumn just being cynical...

JeremyCorbynsStylist · 27/09/2015 19:04

Love your posts PlaysWellWithOthers

LyndaNotLinda · 27/09/2015 19:06

:o MrsTP

SenecaFalls · 27/09/2015 19:11

I will take Sir Terry's name but not his

Wouldn't that make you Lady Pratchett? Smile

FloraFox · 27/09/2015 19:11

Autumn seems to be both a radical and a militant atheist. Hmm

nooka · 27/09/2015 19:13

Thanks PlaysWellWithOthers, I wasn't being entirely serious :) but I had wondered. I'm giving someone advice on jam making in another thread, I like traditional crafts. I always think that jam making is a bit like witchcraft (bubble bubble and all that) but yes to the comments about traditionally female skills/hobbies. Part of the reason I enjoy jam making is it connects me to memories of making jam with my mother and grandmother.

nooka · 27/09/2015 19:13

and not entirely rational FloraFox.

PlaysWellWithOthers · 27/09/2015 19:13

Don't be bloody silly, Flora!

Being radical doesn't change anything, she's a compromising, touchy feely atheist, who wants to find common ground to discuss her anti-religious thoughts and feelings.

No one gets anywhere by being all radical and shouty.

Tsk!
