To not want to use an Anti-barking collar on my 10 month old pup ?

Elmofan · 25/09/2015 13:06

A neighbour from the back of us has just knocked in to threaten to report my pup for barking ...
I'm home all day with my pups ( i have two cockers) they are mostly kept indoors with me but whenever i let them out to play in the back garden one of them goes nuts barking at everything . He is a very anxious dog , very nervous . I have tried the quick spray of water whenever he barks but this does nothing he carries on running and barking like its a game
Its only for 10 minutes at a time, she says her husband works nights . I was very apologetic
my dogs sleep indoors and are put in bed at 9pm each night .
I'm upset and i rang my local vet & pet store for advice .. option one is very expensive training which we just can not afford right now and the other is an anti barking collar also expensive and cruel IMO :(
Any other ideas ?

It's illegal here because it's considered to be mutilation, barking to the extent that it's a nuisance isn't a natural behaviour it's usually caused by stress or neglecting a dog's mental stimulation needs.

So yes, removing part of your dog's throat rather than addressing why it's barking is cruel.

WeAllHaveWings · 27/09/2015 22:06

McColonel are you in the Uk? Debarking is prohibited in the UK the same as ear cropping, tail docking and declawing cats. If in the uk Your vet should be reported for performing that mutilation on a dog, you should be banned from keeping animals.

Yes it is cruel.

SurlyCue · 27/09/2015 22:15

I like the dog a lot more now it can't bark, so spend a lot more time with it (i let it in the house now too)

Are you taking the piss?

McColonel · 27/09/2015 22:16

The vet actually said it's kinder in a way as it stops them getting a sore throat from barking.

The are not aware of the operation and feel no pain.

SurlyCue · 27/09/2015 22:20

If someone brought you into hospital, gave you a GA and you woke up with no voice do you think you would be "not aware" Hmm

You dont sound as if you are capable of caring for another creature.

SurlyCue · 27/09/2015 22:22

The vet actually said it's kinder in a way as it stops them getting a sore throat from barking.

Your vet performed an illegal act of mutilation, for money. why on earth would you believe a single word they say? They'll say what you want to hear as long as you hand over the money. Idiot.

tabulahrasa · 27/09/2015 22:25

"The vet actually said it's kinder in a way as it stops them getting a sore throat from barking."

So would sorting out what was causing the barking and they don't need a general anaesthetic for that or a piece of their throat cut out.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 27/09/2015 22:29

Your vet is lying!

The risks involved in any animal having any operation they need aesphetic for are increadle! You have to be joking me a vet told you an animal felt no pain! Jeez how the fucking hell did this man qualify! would you feel no pain if someone cut out your voice box?
And we didn't call you cruel we called the operation cruel because it is!
And wow you like animal better now it can't do something completely natural, why on earth dos you get the dog in the first place
Are you actually for real or do you live under a bridge?! (I know I know Sorry MNHQ)

LyndaNotLinda · 27/09/2015 22:43

You removed your dog's voicebox? Shock Shock

Fucking hell

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 27/09/2015 22:50

I work nights and the occasional dog barking or a child screaming ect don't bother me, but the day in day out barking would send me loopy.

Op you need to sort this out ASAP.

Elmofan · 27/09/2015 23:02

Sorry just catching up on this thread now ...

I've had dogs all my life ( would not be without them) and i have never ever had a complaint before . My pup is a fast learner thankfully and he seems to have caught on to me saying shhhh means he has to stop barking ...he sits down and waits for a treat :)
So far so good ...my dh & i have taken a walk around to the houses at the back of us serveral times to try see which house that woman lives in to try tell her we are really trying to sort things out but i can not see any cars that look like hers in the houses behind ours Confused

Sorry, McColonel but you need to report your vet to the RCVS immediately. He sounds like a charlatan who is unfit for practice, and his VN's should be removed from the register for assisting him. As for you going along with it, your own culpability is far from a moot point here - I can't imagine a reasonable person going along with it. You really should be ashamed.

Sixweekstowait · 28/09/2015 00:19

I had sunny day after sunny day in my garden ruined this year by the regular barking and yapping of a dog in a garden at the back of mine. How dare people think that it's ok for an animal to be such a nuisance? If you want to keep barking dogs, go and live in the middle of nowhere. I could cheerfully have poisoned that dog to be able to enjoy the peace and quiet of my garden and my hard earned free time. Instead I used the brilliant dog warden and now the dog doesn't go in the garden anymore or maybe he 's dead - I don't care. It's quiet now. The neighbours children play out in the garden and laugh and squeal and it's lovely - no comparison at all.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/09/2015 00:26

Elmo, glad that you've found away of training the pup, sounds like it's much better than before. Also she will hear that your making an effort because she'll hear that pup doesn't go on for an extended period any more.

I'm seriously going to ignore bourdic you'd poison a living creature jeez what a nice person you are - er not! Grow the fuck up! Oh that wasn't me ignoring you but your post is discusting! How many times has it been said a dog that barks enough to cause a nuicence is stressed and probably being neglected! I get that not all people are dog people that's fine, but seriously your lack of respect for life!

Shutthatdoor · 28/09/2015 00:31

Well aren't you lovely Hmm

Sixweekstowait · 28/09/2015 00:34

Naught - get off your high horse. I used the dog warden didn't I? And I say again it is fucking selfish beyond selfish to keep a dog that barks regularly in a residential area,

Sixweekstowait · 28/09/2015 00:36

And you too Shut - I happen to think quite reasonably that my right to enjoy the peace and quiet of my garden trumps that of a dog to bark and yap at all hours

Shutthatdoor · 28/09/2015 00:41

Well saying you would 'cheerfully have poisoned' the dog says more about you than anything.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/09/2015 00:41

It was your maybe it's dead I don't care that offended oh alongside the I could have poisoned it! A living creature has a right to life and as repeated for I think posiably the 8 millionth time a dog that barks at all hours is in distress! Get off this thread and grow up! You heartless person you should be ashamed!

Sixweekstowait · 28/09/2015 00:58

Why on earth should I care whether the dog is dead or not? I wouldn't want it to suffer but it's clearly got rubbish owners. But I'm
just being honest in saying that what matters to me is the absence of the barking and yapping - it's great and hardly an unreasonable expectation.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/09/2015 01:02

Yes it's got crap owners no reason to say you would poison another living thing or wish it dead!

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/09/2015 01:04

Especially another living creature in distress maybe you should wish it's crap owners dead or I don't know stop being so selfish and show some compassion!

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 28/09/2015 01:05

As shut said your post says more about you than the dog or it's owners and not in a positive way!

kali110 · 28/09/2015 01:33

mcColonal
You should not have a pet.
You don't love your dog.
I hope debarking is banned everywhere and your dog is removed.
The threads i've read about animal abuse today is downright sickening,

Some of the posts on here are horrible.
My pets are part of my family and i am not ashamed.
They're very important to me.
If that isn't something some people can understand fine, but don't be so judgemental about people who do.
It doesn't make you more intellectual.

Yes dogs shit on the floor but this is the owners fault, not the dogs.
Not all owners allow their dogs to do it and leave it there, so don't tar every dog owner with the same brush.

kali110 · 28/09/2015 01:35

Today 00:19 Bourdic my god, what an absolute vile post.
This is why there is so much abuse towards animals.
People just don't see it as wrong, it's only an animal.
