... Absolutely stunning!!
Anyone who had to go through the old New Street Station knew how grim it was and didn't help the reputation of Birmingham but if you could see it now!...
Hats off to all the builders architects etc! It is amazing!! Grin

Has a better ring than 'New Street'. Did wonder if they will alter the announcements to 'We are now arriving at Grand Central in Birmingham', but DH seems to think that G.C. refers only to the concourse area, rather than the station as a whole?

BearsDontDigOnDancing · 28/09/2015 13:10

As far as I am aware the station itself is still New Street just the shopping centre/concourse is now Grand Central, where as it used to The Pallasades.

I do think they are supposed to be doing something more at platform level, to let more light down there. Not sure how but apparently " the station will be enclosed by a giant atrium, allowing natural light throughout the station and to all 12 refurbished platforms." I do not think that bit is quite finished?
And there is/will be 36 new escalators and 15 new lifts - reaching every platform.

If nothing else how they have done the refurb, keeping the station open and operating is nothing short of brilliant tbh. The station has been rebuilt while continuing to serve 170,000 passengers who use the station each day.

Thanks. Smile

celtictoast · 28/09/2015 19:44

It would be presumptious of them to call such a dismal station "Grand Central" until it has been refurbished and brightened up to the standard of the shopping centre above it! We can but hope...

BetaTest · 29/09/2015 14:36

Grand Central - is yet another example of the PR hubris that the powers that be in Birmingham indulge in to keep the population believing.

I have been Grand Central in New York and New Street in Birmingham does not come close.

Elledouble · 29/09/2015 15:17

That's nice. Because of course, "Birmingham Grand Central: the same or better than New York!" is exactly how it's been advertised.

ajandjjmum · 29/09/2015 20:31

It was originally called Grand Central Station in the 19th century.

Bea · 29/09/2015 20:56

" The name Grand Central was inspired by the original name for New Street Station when it opened in 1854. Similar to its modern day counterpart, Birmingham's Grand Central Station featured an iron and glass roof, which at the time was the largest of its kind in the world"
BetaTest... Calm down... I don't think there is a huge conspiracy from "the powers that be" to keep us all hoodwinked into believing we live in a nice city! I think it's actually quite nice city! Grin

Grand central - the shopping centre

New Street - the station

The station is not called Birmingham Grand Central anymore than it was called Birmingham Pallasades station when that was this shopping centre whacked on top of New Street station.

Ffs: It isn't that difficult a concept to grasp.

I can report that New Street Station is still a misery to travel through ...

and we're doing the New St shuffle

celtictoast · 30/09/2015 11:51

The station is not called Birmingham Grand Central anymore

I don't think anyone thinks it is? Just wondering if they'd think of changing its name back to that in the future. If so, they'd need to do up the station to be worthy of being called Grand Central once again.

lightgreenglass · 30/09/2015 16:22

Bloody hell BetaTest really dislikes Birmingham.

As for me - just need to decide South or North. Grin

Stormtreader · 01/10/2015 09:24

South Birmingham is clearly the best, we have Moseley for extra hipster points :) (its actually really nice)

Elledouble · 01/10/2015 11:42

Definitely South Birmingham! I'm a Moseley twat, I'm sure I'm not alone Grin

SellFridges · 01/10/2015 12:32

South. South. South.

Brummiegirl15 · 01/10/2015 12:37

How utterly charming Betatest.

I am one of the people who work incredibly hard to ensure Birmingham is a great place to live and work by helping to attract business in to the city so as to improve the economic impact.

Therefore improving the lives of people living here

It's Birmingham New Street station and Grand Central is the shopping centre above it.
