... Absolutely stunning!!
Anyone who had to go through the old New Street Station knew how grim it was and didn't help the reputation of Birmingham but if you could see it now!...
Hats off to all the builders architects etc! It is amazing!! Grin

erm....

"A study published by think-tank the Centre for Cities revealed significant differences in spending by region.

Across the country, spending per person on infrastructure, economic development and the environment is £845 per person each year.

But in the West Midlands proposed combined authority area it is £613.

Meanwhile, in the Greater London Authority area it is £1,220, and in city rival areas it is £704 in Yorkshire, and £992 each in Greater Manchester and Liverpool."

The West Midlands is massively underfunded....not sure where this flow of central Govt. money is tbh.....

Staying with my MIL in the "real birmingham" as we speak and beta I have no idea what you are on about. It is lovely!
Certainly, there are deprived areas as in most cities this size. But overall, it is, in my opinion a rather lovely place to be.

SoleBizzzz · 27/09/2015 13:33

Chelmsley Wood? Solihull best.

Lndnmummy · 27/09/2015 13:34

Been today for a quick peek, rather than to shop. It looks really good. And I thoroughly enjoyed shopping in an almost empty M&S, whilst everybody else was trying to squeeze into John Lewis!

Grew up here and have since returned to Birmingham after living elsewhere for a few years, albeit only 45 mins away in the next county. It was bashed as a city when growing up and it's still being bashed by some now :-/ Some have never even visited...just an opinion they've made by what they've heard.

Spent yesterday with my family at the Birmingham weekender - another amazing event showcasing the city. The city was buzzing. I love love love living here. I know there are utter shit holes here, like any major city. I also know there are beautiful suburbs, which I guess unless you live here, you wouldn't ever get to see it visit.

Those who live here, we know we're lucky to live in such a fab city :-)

Talking about going to the top of a tall building the first time in Birmingham that I was several stories up, and although this is a few years back probably, and looked out, being fairly new to Birmingham, I always remember being surprised how green it was, there just seemed to be trees everywhere. This was not from the City Centre, think it was from one of the old buildings of the Old QE, but I always remember that feeling of surprise over it being just so green. And given I now live on the other side of the city, in a tree lined street, surrounded by tree lined streets, with back gardens surrounding mine that are tree filled I do not think that has massively changed.

In fact, just googling, you find that Birmingham has more trees than Paris, a record-breaking number of flower show medals and one of the largest urban parks in Europe.

"Birmingham City Council reckons our city has six million trees, 3,500 hectares of public space, and 250 miles of urban brooks and streams.

The 2,400-acre Sutton Park at Sutton Coldfield is the largest urban park in the UK and one of the biggest parks in all of Europe."

Racundra · 27/09/2015 22:52

disgrace sorry, what is a metal basher, please?

ajandjjmum · 28/09/2015 11:11

Edgbaston has a higher density of trees than most of the UK. It's also bordered by Cannon Hill Park. We were at MPW on the 25th Floor in the Cube recently - the views were astonishing - couldn't believe the number of trees on the one side of the City.

There's good and bad - like in all areas.

herderofcats · 28/09/2015 11:42

Why did they call it Grand Central? Does anyone know?

It just makes me think of New York.

celtictoast · 28/09/2015 11:55

The station opened in 1854 and was originally referred to as "the grand central station in Birmingham”.
