... Absolutely stunning!!
Anyone who had to go through the old New Street Station knew how grim it was and didn't help the reputation of Birmingham but if you could see it now!...
Hats off to all the builders architects etc! It is amazing!! Grin

I really like it, went to see it yesterday evening and it feels very airy and spacious, it actually felt like the kind of space youd expect to find in a major city.

LurkingHusband · 25/09/2015 10:14

We popped in last Sunday, when it was opened.

(As an aside, this prompted a promise to ourselves that we go into the city at least once a month. It's incredibly invigorating, and acted to recharge our mojo a bit. Both MrsLH and I are born-bred city folk - long periods of suburban calm don't suit us Smile)

On the basis that nothing could be worse than the old New St., it's actually quite a sight.

For me, the best thing is now it's open, all the spaces around it link up and make sense. We went to the Bullring, from there into the station. From there into New St. itself via Stephenson St. . From there to Victoria Square, town hall, museum art gallery, Colmore Row, Chamberlain Square, Paradise Forum ... plus the High St. Corporation St.

And when the work on Paradise Circus is finished, that'll join on, giving access to Broad St. and Centenary Square, with Symphony Hall and the new library and Rep theatre.

All perfectly level for power scooters Smile

The only downside (although it may yet prove to be a charm factor) is that some beautiful spaces are slightly overshadowed - the cathedral can look a tiny bit toy-like because of the surrounding buildings. However, this means there are a few little gems hidden from view - a bit like Soho square in London.

Come to Birmingham - it's not that shit.

Thefuckinggrinch · 25/09/2015 10:18

Ooh I'm going in a few weeks. Looks shiny but scary big. I've never been before.

LurkingHusband · 25/09/2015 10:19

And it's in Birmingham during Christmas

We saw Henning Wehn last year at the Town Hall the day the German Christmas Market opened. He mentioned he'd wondered round it and

"I had no idea so many Germans came from Romania" Smile

SellFridges · 25/09/2015 10:38

Bea · 25/09/2015 11:09

I need to go and see it as I heard they have prosecco on tap!!
Many memories of Brum here too- the rag market and Oasis (the shop above the market that sold Docs and hippy shit), Rackhams (before it became HoF) and Lewis'.

Bea · 25/09/2015 11:31

Yes! To the proseco on tap!!!!

I know one of the civil engineers who worked on it. I studied in Birmingham for 5 years before the bullring was changed and before the center was pedestrianised (yes I am that old) so think it's fabulous to see the development going on in Brum.

SlightlyJadedJack · 25/09/2015 11:40

Rackhams is HoF now? Blimey, it is moving up! Grin

SlightlyJadedJack · 25/09/2015 11:41

Queen I loved the rag market. Got an amazing second hand suede jacket from there.

whatsthatcomingoverthehill · 25/09/2015 11:45

Another one who had some minor involvement here. But not seen it at all other than photos. Would love to have a proper look round sometime.

Awholelottanosy · 25/09/2015 11:51

I went yesterday and was v impressed, thought it was stylish and modern, love all the natural light. And there's a Leon's! Woo hoo! I live in Coventry where the shops and restaurants are pretty dire so it's v exciting for me...Smile

BertieBotts · 25/09/2015 11:52

The The Oasis still there? I used to be in there all the time as a teen.

Awadebumbo · 25/09/2015 11:58

Vado you mean Oasis market Bertie if so then yes it's still there. I took my daughter there to get her new DM's before she started Uni.

Awadebumbo · 25/09/2015 11:59

sorry I meant Bertie where the hell did Vado come from

DrDreReturns · 25/09/2015 12:01

The wife is going to Brum by train tomorrow. Will be interesting to hear what she thinks, bet it'll be busy!

BertieBotts · 25/09/2015 12:03

Yes I do! We used to call it the oasis but we were posh leamington twats so what did we know :o

MackerelOfFact · 25/09/2015 12:06

Ooh I'm heading up for conference in a few weeks. Last time I went (about May I think) it was a bit of a mess so looking forward to seeing it all finished!

MackerelOfFact · 25/09/2015 12:09

RaisingSteam St Pancras is stunning, well done! (I'm sure your DCs are too though). Grin

Awadebumbo · 25/09/2015 12:13

The only thing I'm dreading is the influx of even more people for the German market. I know it brings a lot of money into the city and I'm really glad people from outside Birmingham think our city is worthy of a visit. But getting through the the crowds to get to my bus stop gives me the rage.

Shutthatdoor · 25/09/2015 12:30

So did we Grin

Awadebumbo · 25/09/2015 12:38

Git was just Oasis to us but that was before the chain store Oasis had opened here.

BertieBotts · 25/09/2015 12:43

Is there a chain store called Oasis? The other name was just "the goth shop". That and gigs at the carling academy were the absolute most exciting thing about being 15 by a long mile.

I know what you mean. We only live a few miles away but are going to stay over one night to do the market so that hopefully we avoid the problems that happened last year.
