And also sofas. They are just magnets for wank stains dirt. Why do they keep using them? I think washable items only on hotels beds please. Washed between every guest. And wipeable sofas. Urgh.

If you saw how hotel staff 'cleaned' rooms and the items therein, you'd never stay at one again.

Wanky velvet is the least of your worries as long as you drink from the cups and glasses that have been wiped with the same damp cloth as the toilet seat.

Agree about the throws and stuff though to be honest if I am staying in a Hotel I just put them on the sofa and don't lay one them so it's a non issue. I'm sure that in most hotels (except the really grotty ones) glasses are washed in the kitchen dishwasher, not wiped in the room.

My son used to clean in a very large very expensive hotel. The glasses are wiped in the room. They have 15 mins to clean each room. Can you imagine the logistics in a hotel with say 400 rooms of transporting cups and glasses to dishwasher and back?

My friend used to clean in a five star hotel. They were given so little time that if sheets had no obvious stains on they left them for the next guest.

Glasses are cleaned in the rooms. And the mugs. Just rinsed in the sink and if really unclean, splashed with the same off pink powder cleaner that can also do toilets and tables. Then wiped with a bathroom towel, possibly one that the previous occupant used on themselves.

When staying in a hotel room I ALWAYS wash the cups and glasses before using them........I was once told that they are washed with dirty used towels and I've never been able to get the image out of my head of a cup being dried using a towel which half an hour before was stuck between someone's legs drying their nether regions.

I am probably the one of the most slatternly people on Mumsnet and even I cringe when I think about the possibilities for coming into contact with Other Peoples’ Germs in hotel rooms. It's probably the reason why the lighting is usually so poor, so you can't see how filthy everything is.

I usually gather up anything from the bed that looks like it isn’t washed between guests and throw it in the corner. I hate it when you get bedspreads and/or blankets instead of duvets with removable covers as they must come into contact with the sweaty bits of dozens of guests between washes.

Came back early one time and noticed someone doing the cleaning with used towels- used on loo floor/pedestel then wash hand basin. Bleurgh.

I always carry a 100ml bottle of anti-bacterial hand soap with me whenever I go away anywhere just for this purpose.

My aunty takes her hand-held hoover with her when she's going away in the UK and vacuums the room and bed herself . She also has one of those UV germ-detector lights which she takes with her . She's completely crackers.

I think I shall resolve to request new glasses and cups whenever I stay in a hotel in future. Bleurgh.

Totally agree, those velvet cushions they put on top of pillows and the velvet bed runner things are absolutely rank

I sleep with only one very thin pillow so put the others on a chair or sometimes they fall on the floor - why do they get picked up from the floor and put back on to the bed? It's so gross. Literally disgusting.

I hate runners on the bottoms of beds. What is the point of them? Ditto stupid small cushions on beds. They're just things to remove and have to step over when you want to get in to bed. Can we just stick to pillows and duvet please and spend extra money cleaning them not on unnecessary clutter?

Oh god. I never want to go to a hotel again.

Agree with you all about velvet runners, cushions and throws - the first thing I do is put them in the wardrobe.

I didn't enjoy the stories about how the glasses are cleaned - bletch.

I find the idea of public swimming pools repellent, and wouldn't get into a jaccuzzi if you paid me.

Thinking about it though, in many of the hotels i've stayed in i've seen the cleaners with their big trollies containing all the fresh cups and linen for the rooms. Daily. Massive bags of dirty laundry at the end.

I always wash cups, glasses and toothmugs in hotel rooms because the maids don't have a lot of time.

But it's perfectly sensible to mop and polish bathroom sinks and floors and loo seats with dirty towels. They're destined to be boiled in a huge industrial washing machine.

I always remove them too, I've watched too many episodes of CSI I don't see the point anyway, especially the stupid runner things. I'm not overly concerned about germs, but I have no desire to sleep on someone else's crusty stains.

Aren't they just for show? Every hotel I've stayed at has them you arrive and when you come back in the evening, the maid has been in and folded them on a chair leaving just a plain cotton duvet cover.

Oh dear, I'm obviously a trusting soul to whom it never occurred that things weren't washed properly - ignorance is bliss. However, it is true to say that I've never once caught some dreadful lurgy from staying in a hotel. But now I'm going to have to wash everything religiously before using it.

Yes and if you are really lucky leave chocolates on your pillow too...

When I worked as a hotel cleaner (6yrs ago - don't know if better or worse now!) we'd wash bathroom tumblers with a bit of washing up liquid under running water and dry on a clean hand towel (same one for all rooms and washed after). IIRC mugs were replaced from the kitchen. The dirty towels were only used to dry the bathroom.

There was always so little time to clean the rooms, but the domestic manager would check every room and could tell if something wasn't done properly! If she's left the hotel, it's probably filthy now...

The really stupid thing was having to put the room back to how it was every day. So someone would obviously put pillows they didn't need neatly to the side, or things like that, and we had to put them back on the bed So with about three seconds to clean each room, we had to waste our time doing something that would actually piss off a guest!

Oh and the ridiculous bed runner things... why? What is the point? They just get in the way for all involved! Just get a duvet with a pattern on the end!

Maybe guests and hotel cleaners should present a united front and ban these things?

They just turn down a corner worktolive. In really good hotel I'd expect the staff to tuck me in and read me a bedtime story.
